I don't think it's quite as difficult as the original game. I mean, I remember getting killed in the first town because I wasn't expecting to be attacked...in town. And I'm pretty sure I had to spend more time leveling in the original.
|
I wasn't trying to insinuate that this game is just as hard (I don't think you could steal Phoenix Downs in the original), just that it doesn't fall prey to the modern-day habit of watering down the difficulty to welcome new players.
|
I finally managed to get the game after a myriad of delayed shipments. I missed out on video games (especially Final Fantasy) as a kid, so I'm trying to play all the things I missed. I'm about 4 1/2 hours in, and I love it so far.
My friend code: 506891214495. Also, I've created a Final Fantasy III Friend codes page on the GFWiki, and I took the liberty of adding everyone who has given there friend codes out in this thread. Be sure to add everyone so we can get the most out of mognet. |
I'm still levelling up for the Sealed Cave, haha...
But really, what is the point of Mognet? From what I can see, it's just an email system. Do you get anything special out of it? Oh, and in one of the FAQS at GameFAQs, one person said that the American version includes new stuff like heroes with more distinct personalities. Does that mean the original FFIII game had heroes with much worse personalities? |

Also they gave the four individual heroes a bit more back story and change one of the fours gender to a female. |
Those aren't American version changes; those're changes made as part of the remake.
Also, Mognet allows for the secret dungeon to be unlocked. I think. |

My main irk with the game is how it deals with "Ko" like status (KO, Petrified, etc) as it's bad enough KO doesn't get delt with in an inn (And PD's are limited) but the Healing Spring nor the Inns don't heal petrified. It's not a game breaker (though If it keeps up with my party playing musical statues, it might very well be a DS Breaker insomuch that my DS will take flight) by any length, just an irk. Please tell me PD's are securable by some other meens than chests. |
You could just get a Phoenix Down and cheat a little bit by using the glitch to replicate a few. Put it at the first slot in items and while in battle highlight it, press up and a at the same time, check items and it should have given you another, and repeat till you have a few.....it comes in handy for this game.
|
Means of legitimately acquiring Phoenix Downs:
The reason I've spoiler-marked that is because I like the game's difficulty and I for one was saddened by this addition to the remake. Oh yeah, and if you haven't done it yet for whatever reason, make sure to visit Cid's airship bunker/basement/garage thing. There's like six of them down there. |
You people need to hurry up and add your friend codes to the wiki >:v

Thanks for all the help, you guys, and since so many people helped me, I won't mention names! I spent over half an hour levelling up in the forest last night (and getting a measly 3XP for every battle XD), only to THEN check gameFAQs to find out you should level in the castle, and the fact there's a purty sword there. D'oh! I finally am at the part where I can now change jobs! YAY! So since I've never played FFIII before, what jobs are good for beginners? I presume it'd be something as basic as White Mage, Black Mage, Warrior and Warrior, but this game has so many choices that I'm quite lost here. By the way, here is my Friend code! 300732836370 P.S. How do you add bloody SPACES to email? .... .... Oh never mind! I figured it out! |

However, because Mini plays a role later on, you need more than just a Red Mage to cast magic. I'd keep some spare wizard equipment/magic in your inventory and just change your Monk into a Black Wizard when you get to Nepto Temple. |
Just picked this up today, and I'll list my friends-code for the masses. I'll also add whoever is on the Wiki.
I'm... 3179 1271 2562. Mognet, away! |
I played the first two hours of this at a friend's house and I have to say that I prefer the NES version. As graphically and sonically inferior as it is, at least it understands its place in history. The remake's attempt to humanize the four characters is laughable. I found myself squirming through the first hour because so much was changed (for the worse) from the original.
|
Most of the game is completely identical though... all they did was make the first half an hour or so different by having you meet the characters rather than them be quadruplit onion creepy things, which I thought was a good idea. The rest of the game is no different at all. (Well, dialogue might be, because it isn't, you know... the fan translation)

Not having played the original game, I can't comment on which is better, but I am liking this so far. It's better than FF and FFII anyway. I'm at the Vikings cave right now, and I hate being Mini and being forced to use magic. I rarely use magic in RPGs... |
Onion Knights. That was the starting job in the original (now the uber, secret job), True to their name, they greatly resembled onions. Their heads, anyway.

So...

i just beat whats-his-name at the gold mansion. I'm around lvl 27. anywoo, my friend code is: 094574623747

Okay so I'm at the last dungeon but I haven't heard anything about this mognet sidequest. Someone sum it up for me please. I'll post my friend code momentarily.
On another note, this game's soundtrack fails hard. The original FF3 had the same vibrant level of variety as every other FF soundtrack before and after it did, but the remake turned every song into "omg, we're in a medieval ____." Take for instance the boss music, which in the original was very clearly a fast rock tune, but when redone all the drumset stuff was removed and everything is played by string ensemble and trumpet patches. Yawn. I honestly can't wait to beat this game, because it's so fucking terrible and yet I cannot bring myself to stop playing it. |
Just a question.. how long does it take to go through this game? That's if you're not stopping to do side quests and stuff?
|
You can't easily run through the game, just because you're expected to do a fair amount of levelling. With that in mind, I'd say... 20 hours? Dungeons are short, and if you just run through it and level only when you can't beat the upcoming boss, it should be around 20. Maybe a few hours less.
|
Has anyone beaten the game yet? I just ran through the final dungeon and got slaughtered by the final boss. It sucks for several reasons, and I'll just post this to warn everyone else. It all felt pretty easy even with four boss battles and some huge enemies. I figured the final boss would be tough, but I couldn't even keep my party standing. I guess I used the wrong tactics, but what sucks is that you can't even save before fighting it. So I'm gonna have to run through the whole place all over again.
For the record, I'm using a Ninja, Knight, Magus, and Devout. |
