I guess this is due to fitting everything in one disc, but would it have killed Square to spring for dual layer?

It would kill me, because the dual layer disks are expensive :P

I just finished watching the History of FF featurette on the bonus DVD. It was pretty interesting, but some words/names mentioned in it were totally not what I've been pronouncing all this time, like Mako and Bahamut (Bahamoot? What???). I like how I pronounce them.

P.S. I always thought Vaan's name was pronounced Van, until I heard them pronounce it as Vaughn. D'oh!

It's funny when the guy mentioned that the first game had a deep interactive story :D
I guess he's talking only about the RPGs made in that era.

Well I'll be playing FFXII soon :3

Memnoch Nov 1, 2006 06:57 PM

Cool there's a FF history on it? Gonna look around if there's a torrent,...

Spatula Nov 1, 2006 07:21 PM

I'm 9 hours into the game and have about 42,000 foot steps ^___^.
Yes, I think someone said that this was reminiscent of Vagrant Story, in the style where the enemies are on the same screen, but I find the action much more smoother this time around. It's interesting that I find much of the "story" building thus far is based on the current situation that Vaan, Baltheir, Fran, and most recently Basch are finding themselves it, not so much the political backdrop as of yet. I'm at the stage where you're in the Barnheim Tunnels and have to keep the power alive.

I think the only main thing I wish this game had, was MORE SAVE POINTS. This game is meant to be played when you've got hours of time to play around, so just hope you don't have to put the controller down and attend thing "real life things (LOL)" too often, since sometimes I even backtrack right to the beginning to save my progress.

I think this is one of the major differences between this game and VP2. With VP2, whereever there's a save point, there's a boss battle right after.

Simo Nov 1, 2006 07:50 PM

Judge Gabranth's entrance was :D The character model and texture work is awesome. I can see where some get the Star Wars references because that whole scene seemed similiar in ways to ESB but that ain't no bad thang.

So yeah that's where I am. Game keeps getting better and better for me and now unlocking more Gambits and Licenses just makes things more sweeter.

Spatula Nov 1, 2006 07:54 PM

Simo, yeah it gets pretty good after that. You'll get a familiar face pretty soon, where you are at. I loved how the Judge walks into the room and let's his presence known.

LOL, the character designer said he came up with the Judges armor by the Motorbike equipment seen in bike/BMX competitions. I wouldn't have known ^__^.

Also, is it just me or are there A LOT of handsome men (Vaan excluded) in this game? Even the side characters like Vayne and even the Judge Gabranth himself seem to be very nice and "manly". I sound so gay.

Are you serious? That's just crazy, especially since the dragon was parodied in Super Mario RPG (a rather silly looking beast called "Baha-Mutt"). That'll probably be the first feature I'll be watching, though.

"Me? I'm the leading man."

Damn. It looks like Balthier is going to live to the hype. Although he seems to channel James Bond more than Han Solo (the british wit).

Also, I hope there are more boss battles like the ones against the soldiers and the flans.

I was wondering, since the soundtrack lovingly recreates music from previous Matsuno works (notably FFT:A's clan theme), are there any songs that pay homage to Sydney's theme from Vagrant Story? I absolutely loved the creepy faux-chorus ("Da duh duh duhduhduhduhduh da duh"), and it would be awesome if a similar motif was used here.

Nope. They're all hot. Even the random villagers are pretty easy on the eyes. This works for me. I can't decide whether Balthier (I expected his name to be pronounced "Bal-tee-ay", but whatever....) or Basch should be Vaan's new boyfriend. Penelo? Yeah, she's a friend, but it's not like that. Or maybe it is. But until it's proven to be like that, I'm imagining that she's my fag hag. And you thought you sounded gay.

I'm still really enjoying this game. At Luhsu Mines (spelling?), I still feel like the world is huge. I don't even talk to most of the "friendly" people I see. Instead I've just been moving on to the next major story point. At some point I'll check everything out, obsessive-compulsive style, but right now I just want to see what happens next. So far, I don't understand the complaints about the story.

Oh, and "Mar-kwiss" annoys me over and over.

I remember when I saw the word on the subtitles and I had two seconds to think, "Please don't say it like an American. Please don't say it like an American."

Tragically, my hopes were not fulfilled. ;)

Fete is also a french word... I can't believe with the better voice acting came bad pronounciation. The acting is much better, but I'm not sure if I'm liking the sound and how the voices match. I feel like a lot of the characters have mismatched voices and it sounds too muffled.

Spatula Nov 1, 2006 10:19 PM

Yes, Fete, as in birthday - bon fete, you can correct me if I'm wrong, LOL Canadian French.

I'm up to the second boss now.

Spoiler:
LOL Mimic Queen. I've set all my guess to protect once, then will just go beserk with casting blizzard. I won't probably even care about the small fries. Is this a good strategy?

BA-HA-MOOT? I never thought it'd be pronounced like that in the history of FF featurette. I always just said "Ba-ha-mut".
Also, I learned from Valkyrie Profile, that Ifrit is pronounced "Ee-freet" (Eee= long E sound), not "Eye-fret". This is when Jalenda casts the "Irfit Caress" PWS. But that's another game for another time.

No. Hard Pass. Nov 1, 2006 10:24 PM

You people should have taken religious studies or mythology courses, you'd know all of these already.

Also, yes, they murder french pronunciations. I think they did it to appeal to the American audience. "I DIDN'T ORDER NO FREEDOM GAME. WHY ARE THEY ALL SPEAKING FREEDOM?"

you miss the "accent" like "fête", In french there's word that are "feminine" and "masculine". fête is a feminine word so you have to say "Bonne Fête" which "bon" and "bonne" is the "same" word but one is masculine and the other feminine. That's why for english people it may be hard to learn french because there's a lot of rule which doesn't apply in english.

PiccoloNamek Nov 1, 2006 10:29 PM

I've always pronounced it "Ba-ha-moot"... and "ee-freet" too... I thought everybody knew this?

Inhert Nov 1, 2006 10:34 PM

well I was always saying Ee-freet too like in Tales of game they even wrote the invocation Efreet and not Ifrit, but I wasn't sure how to pronounce Bahamut.

at least now we are sure about the pronunciation of Tidus, which is Tee-dus ^^

Which is why I didn't bother learning anymore French. :tpg:

This "la" desk, I must be typing on a woman.

Stupid Tidus. TIE DUS - TEE DUS. Jesus Christ. ;___;

Soldier Nov 1, 2006 10:49 PM

The anime BASTARD!! had an Ifrit/Efreet.

http://www.projectbag.com/bastard/pi...s/efreet04.jpg

And I always said Teedus since the narrator called him that in the Spirits Within trailer, but it got changed to Tyedus in Kingdom Hearts 2.

I've also mispronounced Seifer (Sayfer, when it's actually Saifer), Vivi (like Vivian, but it's Vee Vee), and now recently Ashe (I thought the e at the end would make it Ashay, but no). This is why all RPGs should require voice acting.

I refuse to call him Bahamoot, though, no matter what.

Spatula Nov 1, 2006 10:57 PM

Seifer? I always said it as "Sai-fer", from the beginning, no problems there.
Also, Zidane was probably the most mis-pronounced character, and I learned the correct pronounciation from none other than headbutting supa star Zinedine Zidane.

BahaMOOT, LOL 4chan.

Soldier Nov 1, 2006 11:14 PM

I always thought the E before I meant the name would be pronounced as "say" not "sai", just like Fei in Xenogears. Also, despite the soccer player's name, I still call him Zidane (like great dane).

"Before I can open this door, I need you to fetch my tools. Doesn't sound very exciting, does it?
Spoiler:
Ha ha, I'm just kidding, I have the tools right here."

Good one. ;)

rpgcrazied Nov 1, 2006 11:29 PM

This boss...

Spoiler:
sucks! Garuda is kicking my ass.. i can get it halfway with mist attacks, then it just eats me. :(

Spatula Nov 1, 2006 11:34 PM

Yeah I did have a few chuckles here and there. I basically love it when Vaan gets verbally OWNED by Balthier at every opportune moment.

It's just a result of character names not sticking to one particular set of pronunciation rules. That's why kana is my best friend when it comes to weird character names.

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/dict.asp?Word=marquis
mar·quis Pronunciation (märkwis, mär-kee) or mar·quess (märkwis)
n. pl. mar·quis·es (-kwi-siz) or mar·quis (mär-keez) or mar·quess·es (-kwi-siz)
1. A nobleman ranking below a duke and above an earl or a count.
2. Used as a title for such a nobleman.

Marquis = "Markwiss". British pronunciation. Since their accents are British and not French.

Same thing in Drakengard 2, with the pronunciation of Lieutenant as "Luftenant". It's British, people.

Spatula Nov 2, 2006 12:48 AM

Something I've been wondering is that I keep selling all the loot that I receive. Well, most loots, besides the teleportation stones and some rainbow egg, should I be saving up some of these items? For example wolf pelts, green goo, feathers, and the like. Are these required to later on, be required elements to make weapons (thinking of either FFVIII or Valkyrie Profile 2 here), or is it okay for me just to sell whatever I want? What are some "keeper" items, besides the teleportation stones?

Soldier Nov 2, 2006 01:03 AM

I dunno, the game says to go ahead and sell all the loot, but I was wondering the same thing as you. One friend did stress to me the other day NOT to sell any of the items you receive during the hunts.

Feh, now I figured out that the weapons/armor slots are in the bottom left of the license board.
