I don't know my exact Freeloader version number because I can't be arsed to get the GC back out and plug it in (it's a very early one from 2002), but it doesn't work on my Wii. It just sits there trying to read the disc forever like a goon. ;__;

On a less depressing note, I downloaded DKC and F-Zero today, both run in full screen. No huge SNES PAL borders. And the classic controller is fucking nice!

Sorry to veer off topic here guys but I have a quesiton. I downloaded Sonic via the virtual console. Everything works fine but I can't seem to do the sonic charge. Y'know, when sonic kneels down, and you charge to spin super fast. It doesn't seem to be an available move with either the wii-mote or gamecube controller. Is this exclusive to the classic controler? Or was this move not available in the very first sonic?!

Its not available in that game.

I was dissapointed in that lack of a feature coming from playing Sonic 2 first :(

Technophile Dec 8, 2006 12:59 AM

Oh ok, thanks, that clears things up. It's been such a standard feature for so long now, that it feels odd without it. But o well.

I read (and lost it) an article saying that the Freeloaders DID work...or at least in the American Wiis.

:( 19 days and counting since I should have recieved my controller. My city has yet to recieve any classic controllers. Had to play Ecco with the Wiimote. :(

(Didn't feel like using a Wavebird)

FatsDomino Dec 8, 2006 01:43 AM

It's not in Sonic. That was an addition to Sonic 2. =)

Double Post:
looooooool respond to a thread that I had in a tab an hour later and look how many have beat me to the punch. ='D

Conan-the-3rd Dec 8, 2006 02:31 AM

Ok, GameCentral (Teletext Magazine on the tellybox) and the VC Site from Mean Machenes says that a good few of the European (read, Brittish) VC games are the PAL versions (read, slowed down to 50HZ and with Borders the like make FFX's conversion look like DQ8's) with the exception of Mario 64 and DKC

Infernal Monkey says that we don't get TG but are geting a few other games from the Snes instead and they're NTSC versions (or at least non buggered up pal versions)

Anyone got an honest reading on the fallout from this?

The_Griffin Dec 8, 2006 03:44 AM

I got my component cables in the mail today.

My TV also doesn't support progressive scan.

...Oh well, at least my games look a LITTLE better. =\

Do you still have the Freeloader box, because I think it says what the version number is on there. Or in the instruction manual.

I've heard the 1.00 freeloader doesn't work, but the 1.06 one does. Beep.

Infernal Monkey Dec 8, 2006 05:24 AM

Seems Nintendo made the effort of making their PAL VC games full screen, but Sega hasn't. Mega Drive games run just like they used to with the big ol' borders of doom. Go Sega! And you'll get TG-16 games on your service, Conan. It's only Australia and New Zealand that miss out on the awesome.

I checked my Freeloader box, couldn't see a number anywhere on it and I don't know where the hell the manual's gone. So I set my GC back up and chucked the disc in. It's version 1.04b. Guess that's the FAILURE version. :(

Amayirot Akago Dec 8, 2006 08:58 AM

Well, the Wii is officially sold out EVERY FUCKING WHERE. I did manage to squeeze in a reservation at Dixons, but it's doubtful I'll get it in 2 weeks, much less before the end of the year.

Oh well. This is one thing that's most fucking definitely worth waiting for.

I did see a Wii (non-playable) at Gamecity; the image quality isn't too shabby through composite cable as far as I could tell, but my sweet deity, that thing is TINY.

Malmer Dec 8, 2006 09:54 AM

This mashine is so fucking incredible =o
I don't know if I didn't expect it to actually work, but damn! DAMN!

Having some friends over in about ten. Gon have ourselves some beer, whisky and a good time. See you in a couple of days ='D

You'd be surprised. I got my component cables in the mail yesterday. Soon as I plugged them in, turned on 480p, and started up Wii Sports Tennis it was like Tennis had become a whole new game with much more elicit detail.

Of course, continually raping the 2000 and 1900 skill level players didn't help things, heh.

But yeah, anyone that has component capability on their TV (not just progressive) should put down immediately for these cords.

TheReverend Dec 8, 2006 11:26 AM

Component cables came in yesterday and there is lots of gorgeous Wii goodness to be had.

This is a side note to everyone, cause I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere yet, but Gamecube progressive scan games DO run in 480p on Wii just like they would on GC. I checked Resident Evil 4, Metroid Prime2, FF Crystal Chronicles, and a score of others. Damn these games look good in 480p. Gonna have to pull out some of those GC games I never finished (Skies of Arcadia, what?).

Final Fantasy Phoneteen Dec 8, 2006 12:11 PM

I really don't think busting out progressive scan on an old Dreamcast port is such a good idea.

Kilroy Dec 8, 2006 12:43 PM

So I got it. (Pictures in my journal tomorrow-ish)
Tried playing Bonk's Adventure and it has some pretty heavy borders. Fun though. I'm considering buying Super Mario 64, but then I've already got it for N64 and DS. So I guess not:P

Uh, almost every single Dreamcast game supports 480p (and automatically upscales, too.)

Actually it'd be nice to see Dreamcast games being released on the Virtual Console, but I just don't see it happening.

Final Fantasy Phoneteen Dec 8, 2006 03:37 PM

Doesn't mean it actually looks good. I didn't say anything about it not supporting progressive.

Is the TG-16 stuff like a rating similar to the MA rating in Australia? I don't get why nintendo are only releasing some VC games to certain continents, I'd imagine that a lot of the reason people wouild use the VC is to play games they hadn't played before so I don't get why nintendo would want to hold back on us.

KCJ506 Dec 8, 2006 08:26 PM

Yes! I finally got me a Wii from the Game Crazy I work next too! I got lucky because they only had one left and when I was in the middle of buying it, a guy came in and asked if they had any in.

"TG-16" isn't a rating number, it's shorthand for TurboGrafx 16, which was a game console not released in Australia. So yeah, that's why they won't release the games in Australia.

DjMeas Dec 9, 2006 11:47 AM

Darg! Everytime i see a screen shot for Wario Smooth Moves, it makes
me more impatient~ Man the game looks totally sweet ^_____^

Considering the size of the games, I fail to see how a single one could fit on the memory capacity of the Wii.

Rock Dec 9, 2006 01:34 PM

Not only size, but processing power will also prevent Dreamcast games to be emulated on the Wii.

garthvadr3 Dec 9, 2006 02:22 PM

Do the Virtual Console games actually use the Wii processing power or do they emulate the slowdown of the older systems also?

While at points it was helpful to have slowdown in some of the SNES shooters I would like to actually play games like Axelay running at a constant framerate.
