How are tiers selected? Who came up with this stupid idea?

Items totally destroy it anyway ...

Items destroy everything. They make the game infinitely more fun, though. Tier lists have never made sense to me in their existence. I personally just play random for the most part. Of course, I have favorite characters, but I can't see any character having a clear cut advantage over any other.

Chaotic Sep 8, 2008 09:51 PM

Why tiers exist according to SmashWiki:
Quote:

A tier list is a ranking of each character's metagame, based on tournament settings. It is an indicator of how each character is expected to perform, under tournament settings, in relation to the rest of the cast. Thus, tiers measure the potential of each character based on all currently known techniques and strategies that have been shown to be useful in tournaments. Tier lists are common in fighting games as well as many other competitive games involving a large selection of characters
Why Meta Knight is on top:
Quote:

He currently ranks first on the Tier List, due to his many, many tournament wins and his incredible matchups (little disadvantage against any character).

Why Captain Falcon is on the bottom:
Quote:

C. Falcon currently ranks bottom on the tier list, due to his poor matchups and tourney wins.
Plus a nice handful of his moves are low priority.

The tier lists mean absolutely nothing if items are on or you're not fighting with Tournament Settings. Not many people fight with Tournament Settings anyway. So this is really just how characters are matching up in the high end tournaments. By no means does it mean that Captain Falcon is a really shitty character, it just means that if he fights a really good Meta Knight in a high end tournament, he's probably gonna lose due to his match up against that character and the priority of his moves. Since most of them are low, he'll be quickly wasted and KOed in an instant even before he could get an attack in.

With a fart that can blast you out of the arena, he's bound to be top tier material.

Kanzaki Sep 11, 2008 12:11 AM

Oh, ok now I understand , thanks Chaotic.

For me, top tiers are Snake, Toon Link and Lucas. (actually more like broken/cheap than top tiers, specially if we talk about move priority).

And why do people fear Wario's fart? it take time to charge up, and you can evade it easily.

Chaotic Sep 11, 2008 12:30 AM

Toon Link is as low as he is due to the lack of him being used in tournaments. If people continue to win with him, he has no where to go but up.

Sacred X Nov 10, 2008 04:37 PM

So how many people still play this frequently? Most of the GFFers I know are usually offline.

Dark Nation Nov 10, 2008 04:38 PM

I still do on occasion, but yeah, not as often as I did :(

But uh, I'm up for some WiFi battles on the weekend if others are too.

The Plane Is A Tiger Nov 10, 2008 04:58 PM

I still play it with a few others on the weekends. There's no point to just sitting around online waiting for someone else to get on, so I only do wi-fi battles if someone asks me. I'm usually up for it unless I'm already doing something else.

wvlfpvp Nov 10, 2008 04:59 PM

I'm still working on beating All-Star mode with everyone. Fuck boss battles. Also, nobody's ever online, even "with anyone." I really don't know where Nintendo's getting the data for spectating.

Sacred X Nov 10, 2008 05:23 PM

Do you want to try a Wifi battle?

Chaotic Nov 10, 2008 06:16 PM

The Wi-Fi kinda sucks from my room and these days I haven't had a whole lot of time to play.

Freelance Nov 10, 2008 08:57 PM

My sister and I play every weekend. The only person I play with on a regular basis though is Icy, and that's only because he's usually the only one available who can play. If anyone ever wants to play with me, then just let me know. Playing with 4 people is better than playing with three.

Buizel Nov 11, 2008 08:16 AM

I still play sometimes. I'm always saying to PM/AIM/and now MSN me if you want to... well, brawl.

S_K Nov 11, 2008 08:54 AM

Almost have the game totally beaten now, but I have it listed on backloggery as finished since I'm basically only missing about 30 stickers which will just randomly appear.

I still play online occasionally, but I'm kinda pissed how the Europe version seems to have screwed people over. Unless this is on all versions of the game for some reason Nintendo in their infinite wisdom decided to remove the scores from the "play with anyone" mode, which basically turns half the matches into guess work unless someone's wiping the floor with everyone else.

I've been trying to Master Sonic, Toon Link and Snake, but against competent opponents I always seem to do better with the cheapness that is Ike. I can't think of any other character in the game whose up smash has the same kind of range as a down smash but obviously it's way more deadly x.x

SuperSonic Nov 11, 2008 10:25 AM

I'm always up for a Brawl online battle, but it was looking like no one played the game anymore. I'm almost done with the challenges. I can just use the hammers to break the rest, but I haven't done so yet. I figured I'd like to try actually getting them first.

Kanzaki Nov 11, 2008 04:08 PM

I also see most people as offline :(

But knowing that most are like that, I will try to log in more frequently on weekends :)

Freelance Nov 12, 2008 09:48 PM

I usually always play at 2:30pm EST on either Sat, Sun or both. There's usually always one extra slot available so anyone can just hop in and play. First come first served I guess. I deleted lots of FCs though since I never play with them...just PM me with your code if you want to play some time.

Gargomon251 Nov 13, 2008 09:16 PM

OK I'm here. I'm not reading 1400 posts so I'll just join in when I see an interesting topic. Also I'll brawl anyone who's on pretty frequently and not a tourneyfag. I don't have any mains, I have every challenge except like 4, and I got both the wii and brawl at their respective launches. Anything else? No? good.

wvlfpvp Nov 14, 2008 12:04 AM

Well, we're all pretty much just tourneyfags who just got both the game and system, so I guess you're SOL.
