Adjusting the handicaps and the weight ratios accordingly would probably yield the same effect of the old handicaps, but I still prefer the old handicaps to the new ones. Much less effort involved.

Meh, overall, I'm neutral about the update.

Meta night special moves. Dimensional Cape sounds like its gonna be pretty fun.
Also Meta Knight stage music....sounds great!

Lizardcommando Nov 15, 2007 02:27 AM

Oooh. Now that's an interesting rendition of Meta Knight's stage music from Kirby Super Star. I like it. :)

Joe Wiewel Nov 15, 2007 02:52 AM

Meh, Meta Knight's special moves update didn't exactly blow me away as I've already seen them in the screen-recorded videos from the E3-for-all event, but at least I know they're specials and not his A-over attacks or whatever.

Not really too fond of the Meta Knight's Revenge arrangement. I love both originals for Kirby Super Star however (attached for your own curiosity.) When the Halberd was announced as a stage, I was hoping for an intense, hard-driven arrangement of one or both tracks to really get the blood pumping like the originals did in Kirby Super Star. (The second track is my favorite of the two.)

This arrangement doesn't seem like the type of track that would play as the double-barreled battery is about ready to blow you to kingdom come. The originals had the right feel to them. Even Sakurai admitted it:

After going with the "serious touch" of the Halberd for the Kirby stage, I’m now thinking that maybe this overly peppy song is a little incongruous...
Now, I appreciate what Sakurai's trying to do by changing the styles of some of the original tracks in their arrangements, but he and Noriyuki Iwadare totally biffed this track. The first few seconds of the track being the original SNES synth only makes me crave the original. -__-

(Also, a downloadable video of how the original scenario went down.)

Gee, now that I listened to the original tracks and compared it to the remix, it wasn't as fast-paced or exciting as the original tracks from Kirby Super Star... It's still a neat take on those two tracks though. Maybe it'll be changed by the time this game's released.

Dalkaen Nov 15, 2007 09:16 AM

I really liked the track, personally. First interesting update in awhile.

FatsDomino Nov 15, 2007 10:24 AM

I feel I should be chasing down some citizens as Sam & Max in an old DeSoto when I listen to this track more than the epic original. Definitely a different feel. It's not terrible it's just not the same. I'm hoping there will be other tracks for the Halberd level.

Oh man, finally a bigger version of the box art. Needs a reversible cover featuring the same art style from the original Smash Bros. game~

Metal Sphere Nov 16, 2007 02:09 AM

Whoa, spectator mode. Decent update, the real big deal is that there's stickers you can earn (also you can bet on the matches). I can see one of those dudes from Fire Emblem, Toad, Silver, a Nintendog and what looks like Grey Fox.

chaofan Nov 16, 2007 02:39 AM

When I first saw the spectator mode, I yawned. But the betting aspect of it has really caught my attention. All those good ol' days of betting with my friend that Ken would kick Ryu's ass flooded back, so I'm actually excited for this mode! Bring on the prizes :p :D

immp Nov 16, 2007 02:59 AM

I've always wanted to bet on this game. Me and my friends would try it but since we were usually the ones playing it never really worked.

Also that box art looks very......fan artish. Damn I wish they used the original's art.

Dalkaen Nov 16, 2007 08:07 AM

Spectator mode? Interesting. Still kinda bummed by the fact that Nintendo is determined to prevent you from actually MEETING anyone..

Metal Sphere . . . the circled thing . . . is that a STARMAN?

It's that Silver hedgehog guy from one of the latest Sonic titles. Here's an image I found of Grey Fox. Seems like that might be him there.

This might be old but I just noticed something reading the Handicap update.
For those that are convinced that Ness is out because of the statement in Lucas's special move update "Up until now," well its also in the Handicap update.

"So until now, I’ve always made sure to include handicaps in each game in the series."

Its used in the same context, so Ness still has a decent chance of being in.

So I guess Sakurai doesn't know what until now means.

Oh, and some shit about handicaps.

Guess you missed this post.

Yeah as Metal Sphere said, that's Silver... The bright blue shoes give it away...

Tone Nov 17, 2007 03:48 AM

Considering Silver is one of the leads for one of the most recent games in the series, it's not too surprising that there's a sticker of the guy.

Betting sounds amusing. Though I don't expect anybody to really watch matches except for the hardcore.

Handicaps are amusing. Namely in Melee, up the damage to 2.0, put yourself at 1, fight against a level 9 Ganondorf or Captain Falcon with maximum handicap on. It's actually kind of amusing.

Or maybe I'm just some sort of masochist.

We have a few alternate colors in that pic, too. Link has his blue tunic and Samus is sportin' her purple and yellow gear from Melee.

Stickers seem to be the last refuge of characters in this game. If they aren't playable, and not notable enough for an assist trophy, they can at least be in the game as a sticker.

The_Griffin Nov 17, 2007 10:42 AM

...That purple and yellow gear is her fucking gravity suit.

God, I wish people would actually play even games as recent as Metroid Prime 1. Hell, go download Metroid 3. One of the best games ever. =\

I think they're pretty much the same as Trophies, only without character info on them.

Also, as far as Samus goes, alternate colors are Varia suit, Gravity suit, Fusion suit.. Maybe Dark Samus as well? They have Dark Link as one of Link's alternates..

Oh, I'm aware of her Gravity Suit, I just didn't make the connection. Super Metroid was the last Metroid game I played through fully (had a little experience with Zero Mission and Fusion). Never played the Prime series.

There it is! Screenshot from my ZSNES save.

Also, according to EGM, Super Metroid *is* the best game ever made. Your fervent defense of the series is understandable.

Super Metroid really is the best game ever. For a while I had heard that gravity suit wasn't a playable costume in this installment, which made this update a very good one (I always play with Varia Suit in SSBM).

Anyways, I don't know, on one hand, when playing with my friends, even watching a SSB match is good times, but on the other hand, I don't know how fun it'd be alone at your house, in a non social setting. When around friends, we're going to be playing smash, not watching other people play it, so I don't know how much this mode will be worth.

The last outfit is probably the Phazon suit.

Dark Nation Nov 17, 2007 05:41 PM

Does anyone know if the color-scheme changes are actually going to change the costume a bit, or is it just a color-swap like last time?
