Aww, damn it. I was hoping we'd get a dark/psychic/fighting trio. Oh well it seems like Game Freak find it difficult to change an ongoing tradition.

...What the hell is the grass pokemon? There's no way I'm gonna choose that ugly lookin' thing. Maybe it's the strongest though, who knows? I'd probably choose the penguin; I love penguins. Although I wouldn't be sad if I was left with the monkey, either. Does anyone know if any are combinations, like Bulbasaur's grass/poison?

Well, there's still possibility of the Dark/Fighting/Psychic thing. It looks like you're going to have 2 rivals this time, each taking one of the remaining 2 Pokemon. Well, the name of the Penguin supposedly implies that it would be part fighting.

It really doesn't make sense for GameFreaks to hint at the new trio elements and not implement them. So speculation says that the Penguin will evolve to Water/Fighting (eat it, Poliwrath), the Grass dude will be Grass/Dark, and the monkey goes Fire/Psychic, leaving everyone both strong and weak against each other at the end.

Personally, I hated most of G/S/C's Pokemon (best gameplay, worst newbies, IMO), and thought that the R/S/E generation was better. The few Pokemon that have been seen from this generation have more of a R/G/B feel to me, and I like most of what I've seen.

Well, last I heard (I think someone has said this on GFF.. but I can't remember) the guy who originally designed the first 150 pokemon stepped down sometime ago. Ran out of ideas around Johto or something? I'm not really sure. Now the guy only designs the humans for the games. But the one creating these new pokemon is a different person now. So you probably wont get very many that look like the older ones or any designs as good as the older ones.

I do agree with you though. After Johto the pokemon they have come up with took a real dive. I can only count a handful of pokemon I liked from the R/S/E games.

Atleast these new starters actually resemble real animals in some ways. Like alot of the first 150 did. I think it's alot better that way than coming up with these random, wierd creatures that make no sense.

Here's some more info on the games, straight from the pages these scans came from:

Currently it is unknown if the Global Trade Station & Battle Tower require Friend Codes, but considering there is a WiFi Center in each Pokémon Center, it is likely that these are random battles & trade hunts

I agree, except with that last part. I personally think that these most recent Pokemon renditions are incredibly horrendous. Many of them have far too many unnecessary "parts" to them.

I actually liked Torchic and it's evolutions, better than Cyndaquil anyhow.

But this new "Fire-monkey" looks dumb to me. How many monkeys do you SERIOUSLY need in the Pokemon games? You already have Mankey and Primeape, Aipom and Vigoroth. ONE rendition of ONE animal, I think, should be good enough. There are plenty of other interesting animals out there that you can model Pokemon after.

Okay, I like the design of the new starters, but I am kind of disappointed by what they are based on. Not only is this the billionth monkey we've seen, but this will be the second turtle STARTER!!! Lets see, 12 starters, and you're ALREADY repeating? I like the appearance of them, but seriously, there's still a lot of animals not really covered yet guys.

I can only think of three monkeys (Mankey, Primeape, and Aipom).

Strictly looking at design purposes, only a few of the R/S/E creatures appeal to me, mosty notably Spoink (and Grumpig) and Beldum (and his evolutions). Sure, a good number of them are interesting in regards to type combination and movesets, but most look odd when compared to their predecessors in the first two sets of games.

Rockgamer Aug 7, 2006 03:49 PM

Yeah, why all the monkey hate?

Mankey is monkey/pig hybrid, so he's not even a straight out monkey. Same thing for Primeape (except he's an ape/pig hybrid, and apes are not monkeys).
So far, Aipom is the only real monkey so far. Vigoroth doesn't even look like a monkey, he looks more like a sloth.

Seviper for the win.

As for R/S designs, I like Seviper, Lairon, Aggron, Linoone, Grovyle, Sharpedo (the front half anyway), Torkoal, Whiscash, Crawdaunt, Spheal and Metagross. Each generation has their share of cool monsters, although in general, they're getting worse with each new game.

Vigoroth is indeed a sloth. Its entire line is.

Vulpes_Callidus Aug 8, 2006 02:33 AM

...

If you look at the Pokedex, it details Vigoroth as a "Wild Monkey Pokemon".

I can understand it being a sloth. I can understand it being a monkey-sloth hybrid. It's pretty clear where the "-oth" part of "Vigoroth" comes from.

But apparently, it's a "Wild Monkey Pokemon".

Anyways, Mankey might be a pig-monkey, and Vigoroth might be a sloth-monkey, but along with Primeape and Aipom, that's too many similar monkey-type Pokemon already, in my opinion. They should really focus on different, interesting types and breeds of animals instead of just making wierd hybrids of the same thing.

And it doesn't change the fact that I still think the new starter Pokemon look dumb. But that's just my opinion.

Freelance Aug 8, 2006 05:50 AM

Stupid pokédex! They called Sandshrew a mouse pokémon when you can clearly tell it's not a mouse! I refuse to call it a mouse.

I also think the new starters look like crap too, so I'll be ditching it as soon as I find something better, yok yok!

Metal Sphere Aug 13, 2006 05:17 PM

Well, we've got a 3 minute long video of Diamond/Pearl in action and it looks pretty good. The effects are nice, as is the animation for the pokemon when you meet them in the wild. There's mention of single player battles over Wifi along with dual pokemon battles and mini tourneys (8 player max). AFAIK, no friend codes are required/needed.

BTW, Download the WMV (2nd link) since it looks a tad better than the quicktime one.

Wo0t! The U.S. date of Pokemon has been revealed! At the 10th Anniversary Event, a 2007 Spring release date has been confirmed.

Grubdog Aug 13, 2006 11:59 PM

Yay it's only a million years away rather than two million years away.

As expected, given that they usually come around before the fiscal year is up, IIRC.

Freelance Aug 17, 2006 06:27 PM

I found new Pokémon! Yeah sorry, but it's pretty darn big.

The otter-ish one looks kinda cute, one of the nicest looking new monsters I've seen so far, and the parrot looks fine too.

http://img347.imageshack.us/my.php?i...ooklet2bb7.jpg

Is the one on the left a pre-evo or a new monster?

Rockgamer Aug 17, 2006 07:51 PM

I've seen all of these before, and to tell the truth, I don't really like any of them. I can stand most of them though, except for the parrot, who just looks butt ugly to me for some reason. Also, that otter-ish one reminds me of Daxter from the Jak & Daxter series.

And the one on the left (Manafi) seems to be a new monster.

Freelance Aug 17, 2006 07:55 PM

Oh? Darn. Thought they were new. The otter is cuter than Daxter, IMO. Oh, and ...what's wrong with the parrot? At least he looks like an actual animal : /

Rockgamer Aug 17, 2006 08:03 PM

I agree that the otter-ish one is cuter than Daxter (I've never really found Daxter that cute to begin with). As for the parrot, it's just his head. The whole musical-note-for-a-head thing just looks ugly to me.

Metal Sphere Aug 17, 2006 08:12 PM

Manafi is a Pokemon Ranger exclusive pokemon, AFAIK. You have to trade him/her over to Diamond/Pearl to get it. Tamanta, the sting rayish thing is a pre-evo of the manta ray in R/S/E.

I believe you're talking about Mantine, which first appeared in G/S/C.

My God, I guess that's a testament to how utterly forgettable that thing was (stats and appearance).

BTW that's a scan of the 9th movie soundtrack. Where did you find it?
