Marking it as spoiler, but I don't think there's anything spoilerish about it...

Spoiler:
Did anyone else get a Robocop feeling when starting up with the TV channels? It was like I was watching those OCP commercials that would be placed in the movie. It's not a bad feeling at all. Like a futuristic TV type of thing. I guess I'm hoping to see more through out the game.

Freddy Krueger Jun 12, 2008 03:57 PM

Yeah dagget that was pretty cool

Tagonist Jun 12, 2008 04:12 PM

WORDS GO HERE TO PUSH SPOILER TEXT OFF THE MOST RECENT POSTS STUFF. ~Skills

It was a bit confusing. Especially since
Spoiler:
once I realised what that was supposed to be, and was pretty sure that it wouldn't last forever, but wanted to view as much of it as possible, and thus zapped through it wildly. Do all channels "end" with a sudden Preying Mantis commercial?

But pretty cool none the less.

Karasu Jun 12, 2008 05:04 PM

Those commercials were weird at first. I heard about it, but I didnt think it would be like an actual channel surfing thing lol.

Anywho, I got my ps3 bundle along with the game. I actually havent really played it yet, I got passed the title screen and then went to take a nap lol. I did download two demos, Haze and Dark Sector both of which look really good. And being as someone who's last generation and just got the next gen system, i'm quite impressed lol.

Pretty much. I mean I pissed around with the Virtual Range and the Extras menu first and when I got to the opening I was kind of surprised and was wondering why I was watching...
Spoiler:
... a live action interview with David Hayter. I then managed to flip through the channels which were :tpg: especially the work out one but my favorite had to be the cooking show within a bomb shelter. When I went back to the interview with Hayter I got a PMC commercial that was fucking weird as hell and for a Russian PMC, not Mantis.

I've been playing though for 6 hours or so and loving every minute. My progress ended just after meeting up with Rat Patrol and leaving the mansion.

Here's the LE I got...

I missed out on the art book because I came too late to pick up the game. First thing i did was check if there's an MGO patch, and there was one, used http and downloaded it in 2 minutes. they increased the character movement speeds, i haven't tried playing online yet though too see how much faster they actually run.

I've spent about an hour with the game and i'm really loving the octocamo, it's so much easier to use than the mgs3 camo system. i played around with the ipod a bit, it would've been waaaay cooler if it let you play songs from the ps3's music folder.

::none because no one finds the thread~::

I like this case art so much more than the US version. Its a shame my cover is signed or I'd try to get this printed out on nice paper to use in the case instead.

Anyway, I bought the Essentials today so maybe in a week or two I can play MGS4. That will be fun.

Got the game at the midnight release and so far i'm happy with the game. Not gonna discuss much about it till i actually finish it but i got no real gripes about the game, the PMC AI at least for Solid Natural is pretty good, better than the previous games.

Question is though, and it's not a spoiler, what was the big secret surprise they had for people buying it? Thought Ryan Payton said they'd have some nice in store for us, is it downloadable content or something to MGO?

Another is what happened to the complex CQC moves like the videos showing Snake grabbing a PMC to the ground and submitting that way? (yes the butt sex one)

Lastly, i was hoping the LE game box would open differently, i mean its cool how it opens but it kinda disrupts Yoji Shinkawa's art. Anyways, great game so far, seems like a lot of many ways to play and advance in missions.

EDIT: Forgot the artbook came with the Gamestop LE game.

Not quite sure. I think it had to do with the Extras menu since trying to access before today required a password but you can go to the Extras menu now and download a new music track for the iPod and download the "Red Brick" camo for OctoCamo.

They're in there, in fact you could do that and some more in the MGO beta. To do that grab and roll CQC move you need to grab the enemy by pressing and holding R1, then tap X to to drop Snake and the enemy in a sitting position on the ground and then hit the left analog stick in any direction and R1 at the same time to roll them over on their stomach and hold down R1 to choke them out. It's a hand move for MGO since its harder for opponents to shake out of.

You can also do the hold up and MONKEY STEALS THE PEACH move that was shown in the 15 minute presentation too.

Hantei Jun 13, 2008 12:56 AM

Ahh, so intense. I just finished watching the mission briefing after the first act, I clocked in at almost 7 hours for the act. Haha, though this mostly because I was dicking around racking up Drebin Points. There's also a lot of items laying around if you actually take the time to explore. Even stuff like weapon attachments such as the dot sight, supressors, laser sight, and master key (well this one comes off a PMC soldier). Procuring weapons from site is definitely money saving. I think the only thing I've purchased from Drebin, other than unlocking IDs on weapons I found, is a hand grip for assault rifles.

Regarding the very first thing you saw when you start the game....
Spoiler:
That was definitely one of neatest openings ever, where you're actually watching TV. Mine opened with the cooking show, and I was all like WTF? Then I accidently hit the L2 button, and noticed that I changed channels and started flipping through them. Heh, I definitely gotta start a new game again so I can check out that one show with David Hayter and Lee Lee Meriwether (who appears to be the host).

Regarding the mission briefing prior to act 2...
Spoiler:
Haha, it looks like Rose is Campbell's wife! I was not expecting that! I also wasn't really expecting Meryl to dispise Campbell that much either. Heh, though at least we saw/know why now.

BTW, did anyone actually check out the iPod? Haha, man it's so neat, especially...
Spoiler:
how there's a KPR podcast with Ryan Payton. That was definitely something nifty. And I'm really hoping they do more of these.

It's still there, you should really check out the Briefing menu in the start menu. They give you a detailed list of everything you can do.

cloud baka Jun 13, 2008 01:20 AM

Ah thanks guys, i guess i haven't completely gone through everything. Just assumed the Mission Briefing was to view the interactive cutscenes again. I'll have to try next time i play, it defiantly has replay value which i'll do again and again, i mess up a lot as it is.

Yeah i love the weapon mods and the whole idea about it, i only have the hand grip myself but probably gonna get the dot sight and rifle scope next, hand grip seems like a must have especially in boss fights and if you don't have auto-aim.

Spoiler:
I thought it was kinda weird, oh well. When we first saw her she was just walking around the back of Campbell and then gave him some tea, didn't know who it was till little bit later.
She's foxy now though, rawr.

I thought that was neat but when i found it and flipping through the iPod i was too immersed into the game to listen to it all.

Thanks again for CQC tip off, gonna have me some more fun.

Karasu Jun 13, 2008 03:15 AM

I wonder if you could use your own iPod for the iPod in the game...

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Jun 13, 2008 08:18 AM

I just popped into Game to pick up GRID and whilst there's a big display of MGS4, there's also a big counter showing "Time to launch" and ironically enough, featuring Cooking Guide. I laughed out loud and everyone in the shop looked at me as if I was a bit mental.

Spoiler:
i didn't even know you could switch channels, i saw a documentary thing about octupus and how they can change colour and texture. i didn't even think it was supposed to be a TV program, i thought it was supposed to introduce the octocamo and what it's supposed to do. i was just watching it thinking, whoa octopus are so cool.

Freddy Krueger Jun 13, 2008 11:43 AM

I'm in act 2 and I have to say from the violence to the dialogue and just the atmostphere this definitely has to be the darkest MGS game by far but I love it. It's nice to see a darker take on the MGS universe, anyone else agree?

Shenlon Jun 13, 2008 12:05 PM

I went to sell a ps2 and a few games thinking I was going to be short to buy mgs4 but it turns out I have an extra 30 dollars ~_~
Anyways totally worth it. I only played for 20 minutes, 10 if you don't count the cutscenes but it's interesting how it's placed.
I'm honestly going to start a new game again since I missed some of the quick view buttons which I thought were gone. I can't wait to play it later especially because of the soundtrack which sucks you right in

Yeah i can it is a bit, i dunno if it's cause we know it's Snake's last game or something but aside from gameplay and stuff the whole atmosphere actually makes you feel like you got your back to the wall and you're just struggling, if this is Kojima's intent, then he pulled it off very well. It's bittersweet, but its definitely got another feel to it than the other games.

I'm in Act 4 and been happy with the locations you go too, the boss battles are fun for the most part in a sense at least to me they take a damn while at least 10-30 minutes depending on the boss, maybe i suck lol. But they certainly are a bit unique, for example first boss..
Spoiler:
after you "break off their Beast armor" and you fight the beauty i thought that was kind of cool that you get to set them free, though it's easy it's a nice touch

Freddy Krueger Jun 13, 2008 03:52 PM

I think hell just froze over:
Gamespot review in and..... they score it a 10/10, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots for PlayStation 3 Review - PlayStation 3 Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Review

"Metal Gear Solid 4 is an awe-inspiring synthesis of dramatic storytelling and entertaining gameplay."

Shenlon Jun 13, 2008 03:58 PM

woah 10 out of 10?
Back when i cared more about gamespot the only game i saw that had a 10 was chrono cross.

Freddy Krueger Jun 13, 2008 04:08 PM

I know I thought they would do like 8.5-9.0 then again I can't see anyone not liking this game so much. It's just that awesome.

Aardark Jun 13, 2008 04:10 PM

I just watched today's 1up Show, where they talk about Guns of the Patriots, and jesus christ. I wasn't nearly this excited about even Grand Theft Auto IV. 'No... why are you here, wearing an eyepatch?' This game will be monumental. I can't wait to get my copy next week. And I can't wait to see what Hideo Kojima does next. As well as the new generation of postmodernist game designers inspired by him.

eprox1 Jun 13, 2008 04:11 PM

Holy shit. The only games I remember Gamespot giving a perfect score were Ocarina of Time and Chrono Cross. I need to fucking start the single player campaign, but I really want to wait until I get my HD TV (whenever that may be) for the best possible experience...

Insert Credit faggotry? Are you fucking serious?

Aardark Jun 13, 2008 07:28 PM

Sure. I will admit that 'Insert Credit faggotry' is part of why I like Metal Gear Solid so much. :) Though, I know that Tim Rogers et al. makes a lot of people angry, so I probably should have avoided saying 'postmodernist', it sounds kind of pretentious. But maybe you know what I mean anyway: more designers like Kojima, Fumito Ueda or Suda51, who do... interesting things with their games.

Suffering through movies is not "doing interesting things" with a game.
