I didn't watch the series, but the concept makes me think of NHK ni yokusou.
I don't think it would be that prominent or easy to guess though.

I watched all of NHK and there was no Super Famicom in it as far as I remember - definitely sure not in his room at least. And honestly it's way too detailed for NHK as well.

Give me a just little while to come up with something. Nobody take my turn now... I have a good shot in mind, but I lost all of my DVD playing/screenshot software when I reformatted. I'll need to reinstall it.

It's called CCCP which comes with Media Player Classic. It can play DVDs (and any video format really) and take screenshots. Not hard. But I'm sure you know that.

To tell you the truth, I got the video problems sorted out almost immediately. As soon as I took the screenshot, a nearby lightning strike made my internet connection go all wonky. Right now I'm having to access the forums through a proxy because something is down in the path between my computer and the forums. Oh well.

I wana say that is Lain, but I don't remember a big beam of light shooting to the sky in Lain. But i do faintly recall a big beam of light shooting to the sky in Some Day Dreamers...but its been a LONG time since i have seen either, so I'm not sure

Wild guess with Figure 17, although I recall that the setting there was out in the countryside so that's probably not it.
