I managed to get on earlier just for shits and giggles to see if the site was working given how slammed it was, seemed to be working fine but the checkout might be another thing though...

Alternatively the 80GB bundle is now up for preorder at Circuit City and Fry's. I'd imagine everyone will be following suit and this should be up for preorder everywhere soon.

Cover art is now out for LE version of the strategy guide.
http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/7...olss500it3.jpg

It's written by Piggyback who put out some of the best guides for the Metal Gear series in Europe and published by Prima. The site lists the features of the LE guide as this...
Quote:

The definitive Metal Gear Solid 4 Limited Edition Collector’s Guide — boasting a hard cover and a frame-ready 8 x 10 lithograph, as well as an exclusive behind the scenes chapter written on-site at Kojima Productions in Tokyo. The guide itself is 100% complete. With the aid of complete 3D maps, the Walkthrough leads you through the entire game covering all optional tasks and secrets as they become available. As the story plays such an important role in the game, the guide features short "Flashback" box-outs that briefly introduce characters as they appear. At over 200 pages, the guide includes a dedicated chapter on Basics, Controls, Items, Weapons, Camouflage, Enemies, Secrets and Metal Gear Online. Containing original and exclusive artwork, no stone is left unturned in this epic guide.
I preordered a copy on Amazon for $19.99 saving $10 over the RRP and with a Prime account I'll get it June 16th. GameStop lists it as being released on June 3rd though but we'll see.

K_ Takahashi May 19, 2008 09:14 PM

hmmm I wonder if I should get a preorder on that guide....

Pietak May 19, 2008 09:26 PM

Update on my end:
Still getting raped by the lack of bandwith on Konami's site. It doesn't seem to be out of stock yet, but now I'm getting no where. Before I could get to the checkout, but now I can't get passed a 503 error. I'm thinkin' Konami just killed the site down for a few, and will open it up later.
What a clusterfuck.

cloud baka May 19, 2008 09:33 PM

Nice the 80GB pre-orders finally sprouting up, thanks for the tip. Kinda wish i waited but i'm happy, i'd rather get the LE MGS4 game anyways so saved some money minus the dual shock 3 which i hope to own before i get the game.

Also, a question about the Gunmetal version.. is it just the color or actual feel of it?

The "Gun Metal" is just the name of the color for the console but it's also not just a color change since the actual material of the system itself is different to have more of a rough textured feel according to Exec. Producer Ryan Payton. Kind of why its limited and so sought after given the bundle is already completely sold out in Japan.

Pietak May 19, 2008 10:07 PM

So.

Funny story, Konami decided to be ridiculous, and Shipping Insurance is, you sitting down? $500.

I went and hit "back" (after thousands of refresh hits), and changed to an upgraded shipping method, and miraculously, the huge charge went away.
Suffice to say, the entire sitution reeked of Amazon's $150 XBOX360 fiasco, traffic slowing to a crawl, many people pissed.
Regardless, I have succeeded. I have it pre-ordered.
I feel like a complete nerd now.

Yeah I forgot to post about the insurance charge but you do get that refunded back on the card once you receive the bundle.

Pietak May 19, 2008 11:03 PM

Ha!
Konami kind of failed to mention how that whole thing works.

cloud baka May 20, 2008 12:03 AM

Don't know if this has been addressed or not, i looked back some pages to see if it was brought up and didn't see but if it was, forgive me. This is from the press conference Kojima had showing off the 40 minutes of gameplay, which he said was only 1/15th of the entire game, as well as the theatrical trailer that was shown. This was from Gamespot.
Quote:

After the end of the live gameplay demonstration, Kojima talked briefly about plans for a "Metal Gear Solid 4 World Tour," during which he and his staff will travel around the world to meet up with fans of the series. The tour locations include London; Madrid, Spain; Milan, Italy; Frankfurt, Germany; Amsterdam, Netherlands; Paris; New York; Los Angeles; and San Francisco.
Dunno bout you guys but i thought this sounded kinda cool, after this paragraph this one followed..
Quote:

One of the surprises at the press conference came at the very end. As the lights dimmed out for the event to end, a one-way dialogue very similar to the endings in the MGS games took place, hinting at some sort of worldwide live event and a sequel, though it was too vague to make any assumptions.

"Yes, the presentation event has ended. Everything is according to plan."

"We will proceed to the final steps of the mission. The surprise that's planned on launch date, should it be executed?

"Yes. Akihabara, New York, LA...worldwide live broadcast. Yes, there are no problems. The VIP has agreed to come. Yes, that's correct. That person. Understood. June 12."

"And what should we do about that project? Yes, that's right. That man has shattered, but...about the sequel. Yes. Yes... I see. That's understood, Mr. Company President."
Surprise on launch date?.. VIP?.. This keeps getting better and better.. like i said if it had been mentioned sorry, my skimming skills suck. 23 more days till June 12th, am i the only one with a countdown timer with this?

Kilroy May 20, 2008 02:03 AM

Dang, just that little paragraph makes me giddy. What is he talking about:D

OmagnusPrime May 20, 2008 06:21 AM

Not that I care, but in a move that fails to surprise, there's no gun-metal grey PS3 for the UK:
Quote:

Konami has confirmed there are no plans to make its Metal Gear Solid 4 hardware bundle available in the UK.

That's a shame, because Konami's bundle comes with a limited edition gun metal grey PS3. It can be pre-ordered via the publisher's website - if you're fast, as a limited number are on offer each day, and if you're American, as the bundle is "only available for pre-order to US residents".

So is there any chance the UK will get a similar deal? "Nope, sadly not," said a Konami spokesperson. "The only bundle we are doing is the Play.com special edition with figurine."

Aardark May 20, 2008 11:29 AM

The gunmetal colour doesn't even look very good, and considering it's the 40 GB version for a ridiculous price, I don't think anyone should regret not having the opportunity to buy it.

I wonder who the VIP is. Maybe Ennio Morricone?

Also, I think I'll have to avoid reading any games threads or sites until I get my copy. All the previous MGS games have been spoiled to me in some way, but this time I want to make sure it doesn't happen. It's gonna be awesome.

Same here. I'm already a bit disappointed to know the current version's "Freak Squad" (as in Foxhound, Dead Cell, Cobra Unit).
I've stopped watching trailers and reading too much of news about the game.
I knew pretty much every cool cutscene Snake Eater had before I had touched the game. I've already seen too much of Guns' cutscenes for my taste. I mean... I'm an self-admitted MGS fanboy. So why even bother spoiling the game for me?

cloud baka May 20, 2008 03:17 PM

Here's a nice tidbit of information. Ever wonder why MGS4 is gonna be released on a Thursday, more specfically June 12th? It's because Metal Gear Solid was first released in Japan on June 12th 1998, whole 10 years has come around. I thought that was kinda neat that small little detail.

I too don't want to know a lot about the game.. i gotta say even reading about everything with MGS2 i was still kinda shocked how things turned up.. as for MGS3 my mind was elsewhere i didn't think much of it and i don't know why, ended up buying it like month later not knowing just how good it was. But the whole "middle east" scenery seems to be just a small glimpse of what the game has in store like the tanker in MGS2, there's gotta be more Kojima has kept in hiding and i don't want to find out till i'm playing it.

While browsing on Playstation Blog the latest isntallment of Metal Gear Mondays had a couple of cool movies if you guys want to check out. First one is a Metal Gear Retrospective - Part 2 from GameTrailers, its mostly about MGS and its spin offs as well as Twin Snakes. And second clip is a something from Kotaku, don't know how long its been around but its Metal Gear Solid meets Lupin the III, kinda cool how they did it.

Hantei May 21, 2008 05:06 AM

I guess we now know what Ennio Morricone's involvement to the soundtrack is. Apparently "Here's to You" is apart of the soundtrack he composed for the movie Sacco & Vanzetti. No doubt the MGS4 version is a new one, since Lisbeth Scott is will be providing vocals for the song. Oh just incase no one knew (and isn't really a spoiler), "Here's to You" is the game's other vocal song as listed on the soundtrack.

YouTube - Ennio Morricone - Sacco & Vanzetti - Here's to you (concert)

http://img368.imageshack.us/img368/6...ca98p11oa9.jpg

And it looks like the soundtrack has a cover. Kinda lame how they're using the game's cover for it (a cover that I'm too fond of). I'm also guessing that's how the first press edition will look like, as CDJapan says the first press is a "super jewel case" (which I managed to get a hold of with my pre-order). I'm assuming the regular edition is probably gonna be the more orthodoxed packaging for CDs.

Simo May 21, 2008 10:14 AM

Nice! Thanks for the info, Hantei.

I used the CDJapan link and went ahead and preordered the OST to snap one of the first edition copies and the price seemed decent considering Amazon has it for $49.99. That and in the producers interview on GameTrailers they pretty much confirmed that the LE version of the game is shipping with 3 discs which rules out the soundtrack included is the full thing..:eye:

So right now my MGS4 haul is consisting of..
  • MGS4 LE version
  • MGS4 LE Strategy Guide
  • MGS4 Original Soundtrack

Nice. I'd like to snag one of those posters too that were at the completion event but there's been no word on their release yet. I've still got to give my EBgames a call to make sure they're doing the midnight release which if so I'll be going and FYI EB/GameStop is doing a deal that if you trade in your PS2, extra controller and memory card you get $80 towards the MGS4 80GB bundle.

Lastly, at least for tonight, is that the US Official Playstation Magazine is now out which contains the MGS4 review - 5/5 Stars. Some key quotes in the mag..
Quote:

"If you come to the game with no prior MGS knowledge. You'll still uncover one of the most absorbing stories ever told."
Quote:

"Two acts into this this experience you might think you know what's in store for the rest of the game, when it suddenly changes in such a beautiful way."
Quote:

""MGS4 is special in so many ways that I suspect it will reside among the videogame industry's greatest achievements long after we're dust."
The mag contains some new screenshots as well such as Snake in cave by a stream using the Solid Eye in NV mode, Snake on a mounted gun taking out an A.P.C, new image of Snake meeting Big Mama and...
Spoiler:
Snake in a snowy environment taking on a Gekko. Looks amazing and some nice touches with the touches of frost settling on the Gekko and Snake's OctoCamo.

Kagosin May 22, 2008 05:29 AM

Man there's detail in the game.

Didn't know Johnny had Sneaking Suit 0X-00573-D (I can't really distinguish that), along with a small part of his hair sticking out the front part of the hood. :p

cloud baka May 22, 2008 10:08 AM

Naomi is some great eye candy. Raiden's exo-skeleton armor is really sweet looking, love the details they put in everything in the game. Me thinks the Beauty and the Beast Unit is gonna be some epic boss battles.. that's probably the third of many reasons i'm wanting the game aside from story and gameplay.

Noticed a lot of game reviewers sending out reviews early though, trying not to read them but the quotes there sound very very promising, i'd expect no less from MGS and Kojima.

The more i try to not read and look at more MGS4 info and pictures i can't help but satisfy my indulgence. Defiantly gonna be there at midnight to pick it up and get plenty of sleep before then so i can marathon it, i did the same thing for MGS2 minus the midnight pick up and sleeping.. i remember playing it none stop entire day ended up resulting in a headache near the end, not the best combination trying to absorb everything that was going on at the time.

From the pictures hopefully we'll be able to control REX and square off against Liquid and RAY.. if you got the gears hell use them. And if we don't still looks like an intense cutscene.

Yea I want that poster too. I'm hoping it appears in Previews in the coming months, as I'll slap down an order for one. It's frame worthy! Midnight releases, I don't think that's happening with the EB I pre-ordered at, but no matter I'll just wake up early the next day to pick up my copy (I got nothing planned for day, and have every intent on playing the game 24/7). I hope they have a couple of those LE Guides though, which I'm only buying for collective purposes (not a chance that I'll actually use it for my first run).

A little less than a week before the soundtrack's release! Unfortunately mine probably won't arrive till the week of the game's release since I chose airmail. On the topic of music, there's a leaked track making rounds that's been dubbed as Vamp Boss Battle. The style certainly sounds the same as the rest of the released samples, it could possibly be legit.

Send big files the easy way. Files too large for email attachments? No problem!

Speaking of the theatrical trailer, I wonder if Sony will actually go as far as bringing it to the theatres to promote. You know, like play prior to the previews, along with the lame commercials they show at the beginning. That'd be sweet if they did.

And hey word is MGS5 could happen, I doubt anyone didn't see it coming. Be intesting to see where they go with it, seeing as how they keep reiterating that it's Snake's last mission. Though, IMO it can't be titled Metal Gear Solid 5 if Solid Snake isn't in it. Incase someone tries to use that argument against me, just cause they changed his name to Old Snake in MGS4 doesn't change the fact we're still playing as Solid Snake.

Thanks for the music clip, sounds like an intense fight.

As for midnight releases, Gamestop.com usually has a list a week or couple days before with the stores that'll be open. They did this with Super Smash Bros. Brawl and GTA4, so i specifically went to the one that always opened up for the midnight releases. The other Gamestop here is in a mall which doesn't open until 10am so, yeah hopefully yours is its own building or outside it has a chance of opening. This would be my first midnight release so i'm kinda excited to see the turn out if any in this town.

I've seen a few articles about Metal Gear to be kept going, GameTrailers also had a recent interview after the Konami Gamers' Day talking to him about it. Mostly like how he was gonna step aside being the head of MGS4 but his crew had some difficulty on how to close the series, they just didn't want to ruin it so Kojima came back cause of them and fan reactions.. YOU MUST DO THIS, plus MGS is his baby what else should anyone expect. So next one it sounds like he's gonna be watching his team from a distance, hearing rumors mostly gonna be Metal Gear Raiden, but its still to early to know.. don't even know what's gonna happen in MGS4.

Sexninja May 22, 2008 07:12 PM

True to the tradition of the series, Metal Gear Solid 4 is a game full of imaginative secrets bound up in a complex narrative. The secrets include hidden areas, Easter Eggs, alternate cut-scenes, bonus items, concealed game modes and undisclosed button combinations. The secrets and narrative represent the game's true genius and its replay value and these are the raison d'être of this guide. With the aid of complete top-down, satellite-style maps, the Walkthrough (written for the extreme difficulty level and therefore covers all settings) leads you through the entire game covering all optional tasks and secrets as these become available. At over 200 pages, the guide also includes dedicated chapters on Equipment, Secrets and Metal Gear Online.

So the guide will have all spoilers also hitting june 3.

So scan it and post if anyone are getting.

Well "Solid" wasn't added to the Metal Gear title because of Solid Snake for MGS1 but because the series took the leap from 2D to 3D so characters and environments would be "solid". So they could call it Metal Gear Solid 5 and progress with a new main character without Solid Snake.

Yeah my EBgames where I preordered the LE version is within a mall so it's more of a pain in the ass for them to do midnight releases since they've got to get payroll for those working that night as well as letting mall security know and all that jazz. I suppose I could check the website to make sure they're doing it and if its not listed then call. If all else fails then I'll just pick up in the day but with since I'll be working I won't be able to get it until after 5pm so I'd be going nuts all day.

Kojima has wanted to step back and let his team take over since the end of MGS2 but they wouldn't do it, mainly because they didn't tackle the story that Kojima had started since 1987 and cap on anything that could be considered canon. Now though with Solid Snake's saga coming to a close in MGS4 Kojima hopes and believes his team will take over the reigns and start fresh especially without the baggage. Unless of course the fans demand Kojima's involvement.

I pissed around earlier with the uncompressed new shots to make some 1080 wallpapers for my PS3 if anybody is interested:

Haha, I didn't know that. But now that I think about it, that does make sense. Seeing as how MGS was not the first game actually star Solid Snake. Plus there's the fact that in MGS3 we played Naked Snake (aka Big Boss).

Regarding the midnight release, the EB I pre-ordered at is actually outside of the mall. However, I can't really see them doing a midnight release for MGS4. I personally don't see the hype for MGS4 exceeding that of GTAIV and Halo 3, and therefore can't imagine the staff there willing to do the midnight release (though I'm pretty that location did do it for Halo 2, but didn't follow whether it was done for GTAIV or Halo 3). Haha, to be honest it's no big deal to me, as I said already my plans for that day were strickly to play MGS4. So I'll just have wake up a little earlier the day of to run out and back.

Great new sig BTW Simo. Haha Akiba going power rangers.

I can pretty much guarantee they'll do a midnight opening cause of all the stuff they're backing it with (the LE MGS4 Gamestop/EB exclusive) and also midnight releases on huge titles are coming more common now. If they don't do it, then there's something wrong with them lol. But if you mean the store that you pre-ordered at opening then no clue, they're all kinda random i guess. I live in a somewhat small town or at least mid-size and they've been doing it before, so hope yours will be able to open up. When the list comes up on site i'll post it unless someone beats me.

And about the Solid title i didn't know that either, there is a lot of stuff they say that all add up to the title coming to so they all sound good to me. Personally i just figured since they're technically wrapping up Solid Snakes saga so to speak that it might branch off to like "Metal Gear [Insert Name]" but hell if they just make it MGS5 that'd be sweet to just as like its the same style and awesome stories they keep doing.
