Wait, is that a Nintendo game? Perhaps even one we might ENJOY?

US, October 26, 2009 - Nintendo of America revealed, through its Nintendo Channel video program "Nintendo Week" that Excitebike World Rally is heading to the Nintendo Wii through downloadable WiiWare.

The game will be a 3D realization of the original 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System version released more than 20 years ago. The game will feature the same side-scrolling action but now with 3D environments. It features a track editor and has online multiplayer, and features motion control using the Wii remote. It releases on the WiiWare channel November 9th.

Fuckin' A.

Why are we still getting more Golden Axe? Isn't that literally the 5th or 6th title they've released now?

The Plane Is A Tiger Oct 28, 2009 06:01 PM

There are four Golden Axe games on the Ultimate Genesis Collection, so they have a lot to go through. Golden Axe 1-3 and the Zelda clone at the least.

SuperSonic Nov 2, 2009 12:22 PM

Releases for 11/2/09

Virtual Console
Fighting Street (TG16) - 800 points
R-TYPE (Master System) - 500 points

WiiWare
Carnival King - 700 points
"Aha! I Got It!" Escape Game - 500 points
Family Card Games - 500 points

Fighting Street struck my curiosity so I looked into it more. Apparently, it's a port of the arcade version of Street Fighter.

The Plane Is A Tiger Nov 2, 2009 01:18 PM

Damn, I was hoping Fighting Street was a predecessor to Streets of RAGE.

SuperSonic Nov 9, 2009 12:16 PM

Virtual Console
Wonder Boy III: Dragon's Trap (Master System) - 500 points
Cybernoid (C64) - 500 points

WiiWare
Excitebike: World Rally - 1,000 points
Frogger Returns - 500 points
Dungeon Master Spell Caster - 500 points

Perhaps this will appease some people?

FatsDomino Nov 9, 2009 01:38 PM

Excitebike is cool I suppose. I mean I know people who really got A LOT out of the original. I can appreciate that. I just never did. I like how Nintendo is taking a nice fresh approach to an old title though and I hope they continue to do that with other titles. I mean how many actual games have Nintendo themselves even put on WiiWare that aren't piece of shit shovelware like Pokemon Petting Zoo or Our Take On A Quiz Show or some bullshit like that? So yeah not bad.

I still don't see Earthbound on Virtual Console. I don't understand what Nintendo's major malfunction is. Why is this game not available?

The only thing that's going to make me break off my protest is something fucking incredible showing up on WiiWare and/or whenever Cave Story is released.

Didn't Nintendo finally say that they're never going to release Earthbound in the US because of some copyright issue dealing with several of the music tracks? Something about them using snippets of other songs. That was the story I heard ages ago. I'm sure there are plenty of stories floating around, though.

First I've heard of that. Reggie himself initially said that there wasn't enough popularity within Nintendo to bring it over, let alone bring over a Mother 1-3 DS cart rerelease.

The Plane Is A Tiger Nov 13, 2009 06:10 PM

I tracked down where I read about that before, so here's the page on Starmen.net. Important section quoted for importance.

They were demanding changes to the game, and while we can't say specifics, it's safe to assume they were uncomfortable with the game's constant pop culture references. EarthBound's soundtrack, in particular, references/samples/mimics every band under the sun, and hearing that a game is constantly referencing bands like The Beatles is enough to make any IP lawyer wring his hands.

You might be thinking, "sampling/references aren't enough to bring a lawsuit", and you'd be right. But it's also true that not everything in EarthBound is simply sampled/referenced, and even if the game was technically legal, that doesn't mean lawyers will be comfortable with it. They get paid to avoid lawsuits entirely, not to get sued and then say "here's why this lawsuit is stupid".

This wouldn't normally be an issue (lots of changes have been made to other VC releases), but there was one major problem: NCL wasn't playing ball. For reasons we can only guess, the head honchos back in Japan were refusing to let NoA modify the game prior to release. Was it too expensive? Did they disagree with the NoA lawyers' assessment? Were they just being stubborn? Was Itoi involved somehow? None of our sources were able to tell us what transpired.

No. Hard Pass. Nov 13, 2009 06:38 PM

Basic run down: Earthbound music sampled Ric Ocasek, The Little Rascals, the US national anthem, Monty Python and the Who. And because of this, it will never be re-released because of legal implications.

@Tritoch & Deni

Aw.... :(

Well I guess I'll just hold out for something awesome to show up then.

NCL is really stubborn and they probably won't ever allow these changes to make the NoA lawyers happy. And I doubt they'll go through the trouble to get permission for the music/samples.

The Plane Is A Tiger Nov 16, 2009 03:28 PM

Nintendo is finally giving us demos? Amazing! I've been wanting to try one of the Bit.Trip games before buying, since I'm afraid that I'll suck horribly and give up after a day.

Still not planning on buying any points or updating my Wii until Christmas, though. I'm afraid Nintendo might do another patch closer to the holidays, and I'd rather do this risky updating as few times as possible.

SuperSonic Nov 22, 2009 09:12 PM

Tomorrow, Super Mario Kart arrives on the Virtual Console. Also the original Pilotwings for SNES and Super Smash Bros. for N64 are to follow later this holiday season.

I'd pay good money if they made Super Mario Kart 8-player online. It's still the best game of the series. Best courses. Best music. Best balance of items. Best driving skill.

Holy shit in a can.

More than one thing at a time that's more than borderline passable.

First time this has happened ALL YEAR

Scent of a Grundle Nov 23, 2009 07:10 PM

I've been playing some of the demos, and most of them seem better then i expected:

Pokemon Rumble: not an amazing game in and of itself, but once my friend joined and there were two of us it was a lot more fun. Sort of like Gauntlet, minus the blood and scary, plus pokemon. just don't go looking for any kind of storyline. (all the pokemon are toys for no readily apparent reason)

My life as a Darklord: amusing enough i guess. you simply build a tower and try to defend it from incoming adventurers. simple, amusing if you're into that kind of thing. the sort of game i use to fall asleep at night.

Nyx Quest: if the demo is any indication, this game is really lame. story and characters stolen straight from greek mythology, because that's what people do when they're out of ideas. gameplay was very slow - just moving to the next area breaks flow.

BIT.TRIP BEAT: what the... kind of awesome? i'm not sure how to react to musical pong... but the promise of four players playing simultaneously might be enough for me to get it if i've got 600 wii points left at some point.
