Well, I'm on the fence about which PS3 to buy. The $600 version (henceforth referred to as 600-model) has a larger hard drive for one, which is good but not necessary, more or less. But it's also got built-in WiFi which, if the 360's Wireless Network Adapter is any indication, would be $100 to buy it as an attachment.

There's also the lack of memory slots that has me concerned. How much will Sony charge for the add-on, as opposed to paying $100 more and getting it included? And there's the shiny chrome and metallic finishes as well. Oooooooooooooooh shiny.

I'm probably gonna get the 500-model, but we'll see. If the attachments add up to be any more than $100 individually, then I'm going with the 600-model to ultimately save money.

I'm just waiting for the chance to pre-order. Sony had me with the first second of Kojima's MGS4 E3 video...

Yup. I'm a whore.

Slayer X Sep 15, 2006 12:09 AM

Pietak: lol, true... true

SouthJag: Yeah I'm kind of on the fence aswell. The chrome, larger HDD and Wi-Fi are all cool but... I probably won't even use 20GB (nevermind 60GB), already have a cable runnung from MGS Online and my original X-box so I don't really NEED the more expensive one. Also on the other hand, Sony said that they were going to ship more premium ones to North America then core ones so I might just end up getting the premium one due to that fact.

Now when you talk anout memory slots do you mean flash, or memory cards? Sony has said that you can use any generic USB flash card reader (around $45CAD) on the core PS3, and neither the $500 or the $600 models will have the PS1/2 memory card readers built in anyway so...

Yeah, but looking at the PS1 and 2 track record and the fact that they're grinding their gears trying to get units out before Christmas you may end up being Sony's bitch if you buy one of the first batch units.

Slayer X Sep 15, 2006 06:52 AM

I don't know about Pietak but I am on my third 360 so at this point I'm pro at dealing with customer service so no biggie ^^

Also the #1 problem with new consoles os overheating and due to the fact that the PS3 has liquid cooling, Sony has already eliminated the largest factor, and beyond that it's almost to the regular odds. But hey if you want to hold off that's totaly up to one's self.

Pietak Sep 15, 2006 03:26 PM

Liquid Cooling?! Really? That bitch is going to be loud.

Slayer X Sep 15, 2006 04:23 PM

Hmmm... scratch that, I've been trying to pull up some more recent info on the PS3 cooling and it looks like it isn't using liquid cooling any longer but a custom heat pipeline means of cooling. When you figure out what that means let me know, lol.

Pietak Sep 15, 2006 07:01 PM

Ah, basicly, that's a type of heatsink cooling that uses "heatpipes" to distribute heat along the fan that runs near it. That way, the heat is taken away from the processor, and blown out by a fan running near it. Kind of like a refridgerator, but not at all.

Slayer X Sep 16, 2006 08:21 AM

Well it sounds more efficient then what been used over the past two generations... or at least it can't be any worse.

It has been revealed today by a radiOPM podcast that the November issue of OPM (the Official Playstation Magazine) will feature a secret PS3 launch game that they "cannot talk about". This week, they have provided a couple of clues in their podcast: the game is five words long and that it is a launch game that you have "not heard of and won't hear of until the November issue of OPM" hits the shelves.

They also revealed that an actual PSP demo for the game Killzone: Liberation will be included in the OPM November issue if you buy the issue from a news stand. Subscribers will not get the UMD demo. Overall, the November issue of this magazine looks to be very interesting and we can't wait to get our hands on it!

One thing, don't count on guessing the PS3 launch title they have described correctly, they also said that the cues they have given are "completely useless", but be sure to leave any speculation in the comments! The discussion on the November issue of OPM begins at 40:20. Check out the download of the podcast below!

Ooh, secret game. Fun.

unless it turns out to be something like crash bandicoot: who cares anymore.

EDIT: The rumored secret game is....

Spoiler:
The Elder Scrolls IV : Oblivion

Makes sense, given the recent rumors. Plus, it would be pretty awesome as a launch title.

I thought they already said this was in production for the PS3? Wouldn't be very secret now.

KOTOR III perhaps?

Slayer X Sep 16, 2006 07:44 PM

Not likely KOTOR 3 because that studio is still ruching to get Mass Effect out the door for the 360. But Devil May Cry 4 and Tekken 6 have yet to be expanded upon since their initial viewings.

Soldier Sep 17, 2006 11:31 PM

Oblivion confirmed for launch.

The-Elder-Scrolls-Four-Oblivion. Well, that's five words.

Well, if you folks remember our piece on the speculated Official Playstation Magazine feature of a secret launch title, you all had your own opinions on what it could be. Personally, I'm partial to the We All Still Love Katamari comment, but I digress.

If this is to be believed, then some of our commenters were quite right in saying that the secret title being talked about was a PS3 version of Oblivion. It does fit some of the criteria mentioned on the previous article, though it's something we've heard of previously rather than something completely new.

In any case, this was potentially leaked in 1Up Yours, the 1Up podcast. Whether or not it was meant to be interpreted as the secret title is beyond us, but it's still nice to dream, right?

You can download the podcast from us and move one hour and fifteen minutes into the podcast to get to the part where they mention Oblivion. Of course, we could always be looking at some super exclusive hit like KATAMARI COOKING MAMA: HYPER BATTLE or something.
Well, that's pretty much every 360 game I was interested in.

And here's how PS3 boxes will look.

http://ps3.qj.net/uploads/articles_m...jpreviewth.jpg

Too bad they didn't go with the black border idea. :(

UPDATE: Here's the back of the box.

http://ps3.qj.net/uploads/articles_m...jpreviewth.jpg

The border wouldn't be so annoying if it wasn't transparent.

Infernal Monkey Sep 17, 2006 11:40 PM

The logo on the spine seems to be going bottom to top (to sort of match the PS3 logo on the front I guess), that's like UNHEARD OF within the world of video game cases. New and scary territory, hold me. =(

Slayer X Sep 18, 2006 09:17 AM

I like the new cases myself, thogh the part at the top is sort of unneeded.

The blue top annoys me to no end.

Its all I can stare at.

Slayer X Sep 18, 2006 09:34 AM

Meh, I don't care for it, but I'm not going to let a little piece of blue plastic get the better of me. Look at it, make an opinion and move on I say.

Ya... I guess I could transfer them into normal boxes and use the blue-ray ones for stuff I don't use much. Otherwise... its going to bother me everytime...

RacinReaver Sep 18, 2006 10:49 AM

It might just be that blue color for Sonic. They might have the cases matching the PS3 color styles for other games.

Kilroy Sep 18, 2006 11:26 AM

I wonder if the cases looks like that in Europe too. Remember that our PSX boxes had Playstation written horisontal while the American was vertical?
It would be interesting, but not very important, though...

espressivo Sep 18, 2006 12:47 PM

I think the box looks pretty good, other than the unnecessary blu ray logo at the top. It looks very appealing, I've never seen the blu-ray box before, the blue box really compliments the sonic art. I don't know how good it'll look for other game covers that contrast the blue box though.

We generally get different box art and designs for most things so I'd be surprised if they look exactly like that by the time we see them.

Slayer X Sep 18, 2006 01:27 PM

RR: I Saw some other box art for another PS3 game and it had the same blue case too, so it does have to do with them being blu-ray discs. If I find the pic again I'll be sure to post it for everyone.

kainlightwind Sep 18, 2006 06:08 PM

Speaking of Tekken 6. Where the crap is this game? And doesn't Namco like to put Tekken out in arcades first before a console? If it did come out as a launch title (as like previous Playstion console releases) that'd be a interesting turn of Namco.

Soldier Sep 18, 2006 06:15 PM

Seems Oblivion being a launch title was a false alarm.

Quote:

There was recently a small uproar after 1up's Friday podcast came and left with a small hint of something for the PS3. During the podcast, one of the staffers (Luke I believe) started to say the following when in regards to Oblivion - "cause I've heard that the PS.." It seemed as if he was cut short of his full comment, and as a result Sony fans flocked to the conclusion of Oblivion on the PS3.

However, based on previous statements made by Bethesda and on a reliable "inside" source, the recently announced title that will be revealed in the November issue of OPM is not Oblivion! This may come as great news for some as they didn't enjoy Oblivion, or it may come as bad news to those who never purchased the 360/PC version. However, I can confirm that the title taking its place will surely not let PS3 owners down! I will not reveal the title today however since I love consumers in suspense, and leaking the information early is never a good thing!

I hope it gets ported eventually. As for what the mystery title is, I won't hold my breath for anything major.
