Yeah exactly, that's why it doesn't bother me that much.

btw, any news on a limited edition in NA? I still haven't pre-ordered just in case something like that pops up.

So Official Playstation Magazine has been released and they gave it a 9. The only thing they faulted was due to the lack of towns, the pacing of the story never slows down and its hard to keep up with at times. The 'second opinion' part of the review said that she was 'tempted to give it a 10'. The only thing she worried about was the combat. Linearity was mentioned but they did not fault it.

Ah, OPM. It's nice to see their reviews are still rage-inducingly terrible after all these years.

At least it gives a pretty good look at the battle system and some nice screens. A lot of those character names are really awful, but I do like Cid's ship being called the Lindblum. Considering the number of other mistakes in the review, I'm just going to hope "Gadot" is another of their typos.

Finally some official announcement concerning the Collector's Edition:

Final Fantasy XIII Collector’s Edition announced for Europe The 13th Crystal

Quote:

Today Square Enix officially announced the contents of the Final Fantasy XIII collectors edition for Europe. The contents were leaked by GameStop Italy and were fairly true, except that there is no Episode Zero book included.

Here are the full contents:

* FINAL FANTASY XIII Original Sound Selection: a soundtrack CD including a selection of tunes from the game, especially chosen for this Limited Collector’s Edition by composer Masashi Hamauzu. The CD is presented inside a slipcase featuring artwork from FINAL FANTASY XIII, with liner notes written by the composer himself.
* The World of FINAL FANTASY XIII: an exclusive hardback book featuring characters artwork, CG rendered images and environments from across the game production.
* Exclusive Art Prints: 3 highly collectable art prints showing artwork of the Eidolons, powerful summoned allies of the lead playable characters of FINAL FANTASY XIII.
* Unique ‘Brand of the l’Cie’ decal: Collectible decal featuring this most iconic symbol from the game storyline.

Sadly, there’s no word on the price and availability outside Europe.
What you guys think about it? I guess it's all about the book. I hope it's gonna be A4 and not just some small booklet.

According to the GAME website, the pointless extra tat edition will set you back £60 whereas the just the game in a box edition is a mere £40. Whether £20 is a good price to pay for a soundtrack you've probably already downloaded, a small picture book, three postcards and a sticker is your own business.

It all depends on this little motherfucker. Is it A 4? A 5? 10 pages? 100 pages? Is it cool?

I'll probably get the standard version, though. Amazon.co.uk sells it for 38, some other sites have it for less than 35.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Feb 5, 2010 10:56 AM

I'd be amazed if it isn't DVD box sized. Can't find any info on how thick it is though.

Tankalex_Storm Feb 5, 2010 12:50 PM

Well I looked around online to find out more info on the art book and soundtrack, this is the best I could find.

It strikes me that there is no special/limited/collector's edition for the United States. You'd think it would be an easy decision for their marketing department to make... Ah well. There is one more game related announcement likely to be made on the thirteenth of February, though I'm not holding my breath at this point, and given it's closeness to singles awareness day, it'll probably be linked to that...

Hmm.

Well, you guys have FFXII CE so maybe you can get that?!

FFXIII will have DLC

I just finished listending through the 4-disc soundtrack of FFXIII and I am disappointed.
I only liked 2-3 songs and the rest was just crap.

Does anybody else feel the same way or are you guys loving the music?

Put Balls Feb 7, 2010 10:05 AM

The soundtrack is amazing, even if the few j-pop tracks really got on my nerves. Otherwise the soundtrack is just pristine, and I can't wait to see how it works with the movie.

I think the soundtrack is pretty much okay (at least the important parts of it like the battle themes and opening/ending themes are good), but then again, I also like Hamauzu's previous work. The final boss battle theme (Nascient Requiem) is one of the best I've heard in years.

Andrew Evenstar Feb 11, 2010 09:48 AM

Soundtrack is good but doesn't beat 4 6 7 8 or 9's OST imo.

There's just not enough there. Battle themes are great but he re- uses the main theme 5-10 times, which kind of got annoying for me.

jb1234 Feb 12, 2010 10:58 PM

^

How is that any different from Uematsu copying and pasting "Melodies of Life" into what felt like half of the FFIX OST? I love Hamauzu's theme and enjoyed hearing the many ways he incorporated it into his pieces.

The Gametrailers review (i.e. one of the better reviews) is out:

So it seems Digital Foundry has come out with their comparison between the 360 and the PS3 in their FACE-OFF section. In what may be only their second time ever, they come down clearly on the PS3 version being superior. You know when DF is siding with the PS3, there's a decent gap between the two.

Face-Off: Final Fantasy XIII | DigitalFoundry

Summation: If you have both systems, get the PS3 version.

Inhert Mar 5, 2010 10:14 PM

The PS3 is only the better version because Square-Enix fucked up the compression on the 360, but hey it was that and get it now or wait another six month for both version just for it to be properly ported on the 360.

Shenlon Mar 5, 2010 10:58 PM

It's funny I've been seeing comparisons everywhere but from what I see the entertainment value should still be roughly the same. I say "roughly" because of the 3 disc thing for the 360 version. (remember switching disc for Fear Effect 2?) It's something that can be overlooked though.
I honestly didn't realize this was coming so early this month because i was more excited for heavy rain. My Anticipation for this game died down after a while and some reviews say it's not as great as it could have been. Regardless of that I already pre-ordered it for ps3. It looks fun, stylish, and colorful, which not many games have nowadays because of the whole fps madness with dull colors.
I'm hoping to enjoy the faster pace of the fighting system since I wasn't a fan of the whole mmorpg style of part 12.
Now that I'm done with heavy rain and I need a distraction till god of war comes out, it's like the scheduling is perfect for these games.

Should check that link I posted, Inhert. Apparently it isn't all SE fucking up compression. There's quite a few issues.

Swapping discs doesn't ruin the fun unless you've got to do it back and forth multiple times, like Star Ocean 4.

Granted, in SO4, there wasn't much fun to ruin, so whatever.

Also totally looking forward to not having fun for the first 15 to 20 hours, if all the reviews are to be believed.

It appears to me that the first ten (out of a total of 13!) chapters are going to be the RPG equivalent of a corridor shooter.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Mar 6, 2010 02:28 PM

Anyone who fancies public ridicule in the heart of London on Tuesday, there's apparently a launch event for the game at HMV on Oxford Street. It's hosted by Alex Zane and there'll be some of the game's producers there or something to sign your copy of the game. Of course it's easy to laugh but remember that the ten or so losers who slept outside the store on PS3 launch night took home free Sony Bravia tv's (And got a free taxi to avoid the muggers hanging around outside) so if there's a similarly poor turnout for this you might get some freebies if you turn up.

If the battle system is entertaining then I don't care about the lack of exploration. FF games all have retarded stories and any exploration in them is simply as exercise in making you walk around aimlessly to spark more annoying random battles to satisfy some weird kids' OCD desire to collect things in games.

No matter how poor the 360 version is technically, it has to be better than Last Remnant and that wasn't unplayably bad, plus I don't own a Triple, so it looks like I'm getting the 360 version although not for a while yet, I'm not paying full price for it when I have so many other unplayed games on the shelf.
