I feel like I've asked this before but what is the difference between the Master System and Genesis versions of the Sonic games?
|
The Sega Master System is the 8-Bit rival to the NES, where-as the Genesis (MegaDrive) is the 16-bit rival to the SNES. In short: Genesis Sonic is the superior version.
|
Well, I meant besides that. I wanted to know if there were any fundamental changes to the game play, any levels and stuff missing, etc.
|
No, why would they NOT release the same game twice?
This is the VIRTUAL CONSOLE! |

1. You just clear the game, nothing special. 2. There is a chaos emerald hidden in each of the zones in one of the two acts. Collect all six to make it to a seventh zone, and beat the three acts there to get the true ending. Also, Sonic 2 on the Genesis introduced the Sonic spin where you hold down and hold a button to charge up the spin and then let go. This game doesn't have it, so it follows more with Sonic 1's (Genesis) control style. Sonic can also ride a glider (which I could never figure out) in certain levels. I think you need this item to get one of the chaos emeralds. I hope that helps. |
Master System Sonic 2 is a lot better than the butchered Game Gear version. You can actually see where you're going for a start (rather than resizing shit, SEGA just cut off massive chunks of the viewing area to fit the GG's tiny screen - makes the first boss especially frustrating). There's also less slowdown.
But yeah, completely different game compared to the Genesis Sonic 2. Has some hilarious bosses, like an angry fat man that rolls all over the place and a seal that plays with Sonic like a ball. It's one of the harder 2D Sonic games, the levels focus more on actual platforming than all out speed (what with the SMS' lack of Blast Processing and all). |

There's rumored news in the pipeline for a WiiWare game called Pole's Big Adventure. Normally something like that would not be interesting, but the fact it's a game by SEGA parodying NES games... well that's got to be a reason to be curious about it.
teaser site article It almost sounds like a legit version of I wanna be the guy but sadly no word on a release outside of japan yet :( |
