Heh, I knew I'd seen that same message before. For those of you who've seen the case firsthand, how exactly does it look? Matte? Glossy? How's it feel in hand? Etc..

Rei no Otaku Sep 9, 2006 12:32 AM

It's not glossy. It has kind of a "rough" feel. The inside has a clear plastic shell on it that holds the discs. Which looks nice. On the back it lists what's on the bonus DVD, and info on the game. It's much nicer than any of the other metal cases I've seen like Halo 2 and Doom 3.

Most EB/GS should have them on display.

Spatula Sep 9, 2006 12:36 AM

This may be a ....stupid question. I'm guessing it's SqaureEnix USA that has only shipped you the tin box for display purposes and not the actual DVD casing with the game inside right?

NEWSFLASH: ALL FFXII COPIES FROM EB GAMES AND GAME STOP LOCATIONS HAVE BEEN STOLEN!

Well actually what I wanted to know if for 100% sure that the inner DVD cover will have the exact same as the nice gold tin one. Probably will, me thinks.

Also, does anyone have a better resolution pic of the LE cover? The only one I've seen so far is that rather smaller size one and I can't make out all the details.

http://www.gamestop.com/gs/ffxii/ffxii_casedetail.jpg

I mean, yeah I can see the picture fine, but having a bigger one would be nicer <3

Clon Sep 9, 2006 02:49 AM

Taken from RPGfan, They currently have only the Normal edition and special edition front covers in high quality.

Here

Spatula Sep 9, 2006 03:07 AM

Shit that looks hot, great find Clon.

Yeah, there were no games inside them. It's just the CE cover for display purposes, and to show people what they'll get for their extra money.

I'm not sure what you mean by the inner cover being the same, but it looks exactly like the picture. The only thing you can't really see in the picture is that there's a clear plastic shell that goes over the inside covers to hold the DVDs.

Spatula Sep 10, 2006 10:31 PM

Ah, I see it now, the plastic shell. What I originally thought was that there would still be the regular DVD jewel case with the LE logo and all that on the DVD cover INSIDE the Tin case, but that's basically putting a DVD case inside another case. :tpg:.

I've never had any of these special boxes so I wouldn't know, at least for another 50 days or so.

Seems there some rumblings about a FFXII side story title for the DS, at least according to this site:
http://blog.livedoor.jp/odeko_06/archives/50672010.html

The site is generally known for exclusive news on upcoming breaking news from Weekly Jump magazine or Square titles. neo2046 at GAF mentioned it and also remarked that the post had since been edited. Square ninjas in effect?

I don't know how I feel about a "side game" for Final Fantasy XII. Hopefully it can stand on its own well enough to be enjoyed by people with a DS, but without a PS2.

FF X-2, FFVII Compliation, and now this(?). S-E sure is going to great lengths to syphon every last dollar out of your average FF fanboy.

Ah, hell, I'd buy it.

Soldier Sep 11, 2006 12:58 AM

It was rumored a couple of weeks ago that there would be an FFXIII DS strategy game, but a FFXII one that plays like FFT seems more reasonable. And inviting.

It has been mentioned before that a game with Basch as the main character was considered, so this might be the culmination of those rumors put together, like DoC was.

http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2006/09/08

I find Penny Arcade's lack of faith disturbing.

Rei no Otaku Sep 12, 2006 07:55 PM

Just to let you guys know, according to our system we will be getting FFXII about a week before the street date. So you'll be able to get it as soon as GS/EB opens Halloween morning.

No. Hard Pass. Sep 12, 2006 08:01 PM

Shut up, fanboy. That comic was hilarious. Seriously, Soldier. You're the fucking embodiment of Walt and Steve Dave. Learn to laugh at the things you care about, or you have no fucking right to so much as smirk at the things you don't.

Inhert Sep 12, 2006 08:43 PM

maybe over-reacting there? I didn't find it that funny either >.>

and I always thought that the release date was the october 31... so why is it one week earlier if it's suppose to be the release date?

Damn. Calm down man. I agree that you should be able to laugh at things you like, but at the same the comic was far from hilarious. Not to mention Soldier never even said it wasn't funny.

As for Inhert, with games like Final Fantasy we get them early. That way the company can be sure to have the game out on a certain date. We get the game a week beforehand, but we can't sell them. Same thing happened with Lego Star Wars 2. Since they wanted the game to come out the same time as the new DVDs.

Maybe for the US. Is this is also the case for Canada, then I better update my vacation time accordingly.

Zeta26 Sep 12, 2006 11:27 PM

Heh, with this. I could careless about Halloween. I would just be playing this while the usual is happening during the night

Shut up, fanboy. I know the comic was hilarious. But if you bothered to read thier article that accompanied the strip, you'd find out that they're not that confident in the game's battle system.

Of course you won't bother to check for yourself, so I have to just quote the whole thing. Which you won't read anyway.

Quote:

FFXII's Gambit System is, and I am not exaggerating for effect, the mechanism by which you relinquish control of the game.

The Final Fantasy series has been an nearly unbroken string of cinemas for several installments now, and with this new innovation they have managed to wrest even combat - that tawdry, unregulated brothel of player interaction - from our increasingly desperate grip. I am not a "Final Fantasy Hater," though such people exist - indeed, I believe many are currently employed at SquareEnix, where their evil labours on Final Fantasy XII have birthed darkness in a twisted mockery of The Holy Nativity.

A glance at today's comic will give you a taste of a savage and cyber future where the rubbery feeding tubes of SquareEnix - tubes which are at once part esophagus, part tentacle - latch on and then digest the Odin All-Father of gaming deities.

1up suggests in their recent preview that it's hard to know what the fan reaction will be, but one need not resort to nostradaman ambiguities to derive this one. It is going to sell out in every store until the stores get their next shipments, which will then sell out. The lines of merchandise will themselves create lines, except they will be lines of people instead, and their hands will clench on sweaty money. Reviews will rest high, like crowns, at 9.0 and above. No divine punishment will ever be meted out! The giant hammer will hang there, suspended, but not fall. Looking out from my tower - my robe resplendent, chin heavy in my palm - I will think of winter.

Even I - I, who have made myself a fortress against it! - feel that brand's dense core drawing me in. It's even set in Ivalice, which twists the knife. I want to summon spectacular creatures to war with violent root vegetables - or, at least, I am not opposed to their being summoned. I want to navigate convoluted familial bonds and fly in ships designed explicitly for that purpose.

Most of all, I want to do what's right.

And I love being wrong on things like this, so if it's really this amazing thing where you're, like, programming your guys or whatever, you'll tell me about it - it's not like I don't own a PS2. It may be physically difficult to pry out the Guitar Hero disc by this point, but I've been working out, and I think I've got what it takes.

(CW)TB out.
I happen to value PA's comments quite a bit, so when they express worry that the game may be more boring than you thought, then I get a bit worried too.

Cobalt Katze Sep 13, 2006 02:37 AM

Any reply to the PA comments from people that've played the import? Kind of curious myself.

CuteChocobo Sep 13, 2006 11:47 AM

Actually I don't know why they complaint about the 'lack of fun' with that battle system. In actual fact, I find this battle system quite challenging, because not only you have to control your character around the field (e.g. Star Ocean type) but also breaking the SO restriction and actually 'program' your other characters AI and telling them exactly how they interact. Lots and LOTS of trial and error will be consumed... especially for those who are not farmiliar with the programming priority hierarchies :)

There are times where your config just truely sucks and you'll soon realised after you play a few battles, and what makes it even worse is if you just found out that you have forgotten to put 'use potion/cast curaga' command in a boss battle... thats where the fustration and challenge kicks in. My advice to those who haven't played the game, don't see any 'ultimate gambit command' FAQs until you have tried your own.

Thou, I have to say that the slowness in the battle sometimes really gets to me, and plus the characters the way they fight gives me no sense of urgency... sloooowly walking around the battle field XD

FFXII DS Confirmed.

http://gamesarefun.com/news.php?newsid=6860

I'm hoping this is a prequel (which should be, due to the younger look of the characters), because it pisses me off when I learn ahead of time which characters will survive through the end.

Hey, now don't jump to conclusions! What if some even happens in FFXII's timeline where after the PS2 game, something causes the entire cast (both the ones that survived and ones that didn't) to come back to life, but revert back in their age? :tpg:

In all seriousness though, this is pretty great! Squeenix sure hasn't been shy with putting their games onto the DS. Hopefully, this'll lead them to create a main entry in the franchise that utilizes Wii's control scheme.

Also, CuteChocobo, regarding what you said about the battle system, it's exactly why I'm looking forward to it! I think it's gonna offer a lot of opportunities for fun experimentation when it comes to implementing a favorable combination of different AI orders and priorities!

Thanks for letting us know. I'm the type that get's fed up pretty quickly and want to get it over with, but I guess the challenge is where the fun is at for this game, and that's what I'm going for. Hopefully I just hope I won't depend too much on the strategy guide.

Also, with that news. Here's also some news you guys might find interesting.

53 more days~~~.

I must be a nerd too. I don't have a list or anything, but I'm counting down the days. I can't wait for this game! Heck, I haven't been this excited for something in quite some time. :sonyPS2:

I guess that's kind of sad, but whatever.

I'm excited for the DS game too even though we have very little info on it. :x
