I only ever say it when I'm either flaming at someone, pretending to flame at someone, stressing or emphasising a point, or quoting someone who swears. This ends up with me swearing quite a bit

Mithos Jul 18, 2006 10:54 AM

Mm.
I'll say "the ess-word" at myself occasionally. "damn" appears in my vocabulary, if that counts.

But I try not to swear. Among my little circle, it seems to be more of a deal when I swear, compared to others. I even purposefully typo the infamous "omfg" as "omhd" or something similar to avoid it. ><;;
Yes, "wtf?" does go to "qtr?". -.-

I also try not to swear at someone (other than myself, of course...we're all exception to our own rules ><;;). I might swear at something, or at a particular event, but I don't like it when people swear at each other, or call each other "~ing idiot"s or what not.
I don't remember the last time I did swear at someone, if such a time existed.

I don't know - I try to have respect for people, I suppose.

So do I. But then again, they're only people... :/

Mithos Jul 18, 2006 11:04 AM

Well, even so...last time I checked, I was one too *sigh*.
So by abiding by the Golden Rule of ethics (treat others as you want them to treat you), I guess I'm forced to not call everyone ~ing morons; since, although I undoubtedly am one, I wouldn't want to have it said to me in such a harsh manner.

xD

Alice Jul 18, 2006 11:08 AM

It's really the same principle as smoking in public, Ence. Your rights end where others' begin. I would never dream of criticizing someone who chooses to curse, excessively or otherwise. But people really should try to be respectful to others when they're in public. If you want to curse, fine by me. Just please don't assume that everyone else should be OK with it. In other words, say what you want to say, just don't blast it too loudly. I think that's reasonable.

Paco Jul 18, 2006 11:30 AM

See, this is where I have a problem with that. I completely understand the smoking; we've been shown proof that second hand smoke is really as bad, if not worse, for your health so smoking it around other people is almost intentionally wanting to bring them harm. I have yet to find proof that my cursing is going to turn someone's kid into a dropout junkie.

Alice Jul 18, 2006 11:36 AM

Obviously it wouldn't. It just undermines some parents' value systems, which you have no right to do. Some people purposely shield their children from movies, TV shows and situations where they might be exposed to things that THE PARENT (not Joe Q. Public) finds offensive. Some of these things are curse words, drug/alcohol references, violence, sex, etc.

Whether the average man on the street agrees with these parents or not is irrelevant. It's a simple matter of respect. You have to understand that not everyone is comfortable using curse words, and that someone might be offended by them.

Vampiro Jul 18, 2006 04:12 PM

Exactly. It doesn't matter if it harms someone or not, much like smoking, a lot of people don't appreciate being sworn around. If you feel the need to swear, know who it's around and know whether the situation calls for it. There's a reason both swearing and smoking are usually frowned upon by the general public.

I understand that. I'm not arguing about undermining any way that a parent feels like raising their child. But it's naive to think that parents can shield their children from these things forever and EVERYWHERE they go.

I respect a parent's right to shield a child from these things in their home and other designated places since, for example, I obviously wouldn't come to their house as a guest and curse like it's my personal pub.

In a "family restaurant", per se, I obvioiusly watch my language a lot more often than I normally would because I understand that the environment does not cater to my swearing. It just amuses me, for example, when I'm walking down the street in Pismo with my friends and having a typical curse-filled conversation like WE ALWAYS do and I get parents shooting me these dirty looks like, "You fucking spic I was on the street first, you have no right to swear around my child."

I apologize very much, ma'am... But this isn't your sacrosanct home and there's no laws against me cursing on public city streets... Yet.

Yeah, like I said... There's no law against it YET. Smoking has already been banned from pretty much every place that isn't one's personal home. It won't be long before this "for the children" mindset censors my sailor's mouth in those places as well.

starslight Jul 18, 2006 04:47 PM

I try to swear as little as possible, but the cuss words tumble out anyway when I'm angry about something. I avoid doing it in public because it draws dirty looks from parents and old people. I don't really get off on offending people.

Don't care if other people do it, though, as long as it's not every other word, in which case the profanity becomes a distraction rather than a point of emphasis.

It doesn't matter if there's a law or not. Many things you just shouldn't do are completely legal. As for the last part, I wouldn't worry about that if I were you. If anything, based on the direction our culture is currently moving in, swear words will be phased out. Ass, bitch, shit, etc are all ready pretty common on TV and other forms of media. I wouldn't doubt that the rest are following close behind.

Mithos Jul 18, 2006 05:24 PM

I love the way that ethical debate seldom goes anywhere.
(I love it so much I want to drop my philosophy and ethics course. ><;;)

Sorry, ignore me. xD

Vampiro Jul 18, 2006 05:45 PM

Debates that go no where are often the best debates to partake in.

Paco Jul 18, 2006 05:55 PM

So I've heard. There's a whole swarm of folks that can attest to that.

CryHavoc Jul 18, 2006 06:47 PM

Online i'm very tame. In real life i cuss and swear so much i constantly get into fights because people would think i'm dissing them.

I still do it anyway.

Deusanimus Jul 18, 2006 08:53 PM

To be honest, I'm normally not quite so profane. I'm actually more prone to blasphemies, but I do have my days when I swear like a boat full of navy guys.

Signify Jul 19, 2006 06:21 PM

I'm pretty profane when I choose to be, especially when I'm angry. I try to tone it down, though. A lot of prospective significant others seem to find it to be a turn off. Blah.

Bernard Black Jul 19, 2006 06:29 PM

If I know that a particular group of people is unlikely to let it slip, I won't swear. Otherwise it's just habit for me. I get worse when I'm nervous or angry, but apart from that, swearing fits into my everyday vocabulary more frequently than I would like it to.

projectg Jul 21, 2006 12:54 PM

I swear too effin much. But not every other effen word though. :D

my word... where did that come from? ^-^

Usually I'm not profane. But I seem to more than make up for that in work. My boss especially, has come up with some very creative expressions when the computers don't behave the way they should. Our data person also came up with the "fuck-you" dance which is pretty hilarious to watch.

daguuy Jul 22, 2006 08:31 PM

i rarely cuss in public unless i get pissed off. then i cuss almost every word i say

Blackfate Jul 23, 2006 08:52 AM

There are only times that I swear and that is when I either get annoyed with someone or angry at someone or something. I remember this video from World of Warcraft where this guy was leading a raid to kill a Dragon and every other word from his mouth was "fuck". It's amusing I suppose and this really didn't have much to do with anything but I thought of as I was typing this response.

yangxu Jul 23, 2006 11:15 AM

I hardly swear, the word fuck not in my collection of swear words, the most I could say is shit, and that's only under extreme circumstances... I use bastard or hell more commonly these days.
