My thoughts exactly. I don't like that beret at all. You can barely see the character's face because they made it so big.

Metal Sphere Jul 15, 2006 06:44 PM

Yeah, it's been confirmed that you can trade your R/S/E/Fr/Lg pokemon to Diamond/Pearl after meeting certain requirements.

Acro-nym Jul 15, 2006 06:44 PM

The way I see it, we need a new combination of starting types. Maybe electric/flying/grass. No, electric's jsut resistant to grass. Hmm... Maybe electirc/water/ground. Yes, that would do fine...

Muzza Jul 15, 2006 08:19 PM

Blech, those definitely can't be starter pokemon. Firstly, the third one is just too hideous. Blech. Secondly, in a video on the pokewiki site someone linked to, the opponent is using the first pokemon (the squirrel one) meaning it isn't likely someone else (besides your rival, that is...) would be using a starter pokemon.

C'mon, someone needs to leak the new starter pokemon, I hope they change the grass/fire/water tradition, maybe poison/bug/psychic? Nah, I guess most people would just go for the psychic pokemon :)

Anyway, it sounds like they're using old tunes in Diamond and Pearl - any news on who's composing this time around?

I think they should go for dark/psychic/fighting trio. That would be awesome.

Muzza Jul 15, 2006 10:28 PM

It would be, no inferior types in that trio.

scotty Jul 15, 2006 10:54 PM

This may be the only pokemon I will buy after pokemon red since I can't use my GBA flash cart for it.

Neogin Jul 16, 2006 09:07 PM

Hmm, check this out. How Pokemon Wifi will work.

http://www.thepikaclub.com/web/dpwifi.php

Hmm, I'm kinda disappointed. So it's going to be like Animal Crossing, I need a friend code no matter what I want to do? I would have loved to have a random battle via Wi-fi..

Shonos Jul 16, 2006 09:35 PM

Well, you can still go to message boards or chatrooms where people have posted thier codes. So you could kind of get those random battles. Just.. ask random people for thiers.

But wouldn't the friend code method be better anyways? Now you dont have to worry about things like being matched up with someone who has a gamesharked level 100 mew with max stats. >_>

Freelance Jul 17, 2006 06:44 AM

I was thinking how better the game would be if I could fight random opponents until I read your post, Shonos. I don't like fighting anyone who uses Legendaries in their teams, especially if their entire team comprises of Legendaries.

On the other hand, I think having random people is better for trading. You remember the recent games where you could post what you wanted and what you'd trade it for on a bulletin board? Well I really liked that idea, and having random people would certainly make it even better if they have what you're looking for, as opposed to several friends who may not even have what you're looking for. There's far more strangers in the world than friends.

BTW, the speculation about new starting types is on the money. Here's some new info:

Quote:

Interesting... By playing the Pokémon Garden game on the website on Yahoo I posted earlier, you get some info, which is not yet final decided, but at this time of developement, that's their plan for the game. Let's look at it.

- Startingtypes WON'T be Grass/Water/Fire this time. It'll be another triangle of types, though: Fighting/Dark/Psychic.

- Roselia can evolve now.

- The region, Shinou, has a undergrund-world/base.

- The fighting system has been changed drastically, i.e. the Psychic and Special attacks. Now their type will be based on the actual attack, i.e. ThunderPunch now being Psychical and Hyber Beam being Special. This could make a lot of Pokémon either much stronger or weaker than in the previous games.

WraithTwo Jul 17, 2006 02:36 PM

Thats crazy.

AWESOME, wow, way to shake things up. I really can't wait to see what this does to battling strategies.

The fact they have adopted a different elemental trio for the starters already sounds intriguing, to say the least.
I consider Silver/Gold/Crystal to be the best-conceived of the three arcs, be it both for its dimensional vastitude and the innovations it brought to the franchise.

I wonder if these further installments will be capable of topping such achievements. They need to apply some severe change to the gameplay scheme, otherwise I feel that the game's trademark style and setup might soon become too stale and monotone.

Of course, that's not to say I'm not interested. We'll see how these will fare.

Acro-nym Jul 17, 2006 04:32 PM

Something seems wrong with not having to work at all to get a decent Dark or Psychic Pokémon. {sighs}

Anyways, this new fighting system makes me anxious. The last time they changed the system, the new Pokémon were, overall, superior to the others. Useful ones like Cloyster were noticeably not as powerful. I seriously hope this does not occur again.

Metal Sphere Jul 17, 2006 04:49 PM

We'll just have to wait and see, but maybe one major motivation behind this shift was to further nerf the Psychic class. They've seen countless revisions so far, but they're still a tad overpowered.

Muzza Jul 18, 2006 06:25 AM

Something just came to me...isn't psychic ineffective against dark? Not just decreased damage but actual 0 damage? That would prove to be quite stupid, hopefully they'll tweak the elemental system so that psychic is just poor against dark, not completely ineffective...

Freelance Jul 18, 2006 06:34 AM

Meh, I don't often use any Psychics in my team, except for Grumpig and Alakazam at one point.

@Muzza: It can't be any different from psyhical(sp?) attacks having no effect at all on Ghost types.

Muzza Jul 18, 2006 06:50 AM

Wha? But normal and ghost types have never been choices as starter pokemon.

Psychic is ineffective against Dark, but I think you'll find it's not to the degree you are talking about.

EDIT: I was wrong, ignore above statement. :)

Alice Jul 18, 2006 08:37 AM

I hope I don't have to read through four pages of this to find out the following information:

1. When exactly are Pokemon Diamond and Pearl being released; and

2. Will they be for DS only?

Grubdog Jul 18, 2006 08:51 AM

Next year, and yes of course.

Psychic attacks do absolutely nothing against Dark pokemon, and neither do NORMAL attacks. Starting off with a Dark pokemon would be a huge advantage since 90% of the attacks early on in the game are normal, and one of your rivals would have a Psychic Pokemon you could destroy.

Starting with a fighting Pokemon would also be fairly easy as you could destroy all the normal Pokemon you find early in the game, and also destroy the unbeatable Dark pokemon. Maybe they'll just really mix things up though and we wont be seeing as many normal type Pokemon at the beginning.

However this lineup would make the Psychic type a bit weaker, which would be one big plus. AND that new Physical / Special attack thing could balance it out as well. If Hyper Beam would now be a special, would that make it a Normal-Special type move? Since the element is normal. There's still a bit of confusion in that.

Freelance Jul 18, 2006 09:10 AM

Oh, I was talking in general, not anything directly related to starting Pokémon. Sure, having new starting Types would be interesting, but all the same, I don't mind having the same Fire/Water/Grass combo in every game.

1. Probably March 2007, if past releases are any indication. Not to mention this explanation as to why these games are often released in March:

2. Grub's already covered this, but the cover art's a page or two back if you're interested in it.

The new attack system sounds odd, and I'd rather have a preview flesh it out before I rate it. Though anything that can boost neglected types/ add more variety to battles/ weaken psychics is welcome news to me.

Alice Jul 18, 2006 01:25 PM

So you won't be able to play these on a Gameboy Advance SP? (Please don't yell at me. I don't know this stuff.)
