Yay! Those two also rearranged the FFII OST, and it really turned out awesome. Can't wait for it!

A similar mail feature was also included in the GameCube-exclusive Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles. Square Enix tipped us off that the Mognet will be making a return appearance in FFIII on the DS, this time with more functionality than ever.

It looks as though this mail system will work similarly to the way it did in FFIX: you'll be able to approach any of the moogles inhabiting the game world and speak to them, which will let you then send mail to any character you've met previously on your journey. This will sometimes let you open up new quests that will yield rewards you wouldn't be able to access otherwise. In the example shown in our new screenshots, the player has sent another character a letter asking how the person's kids are doing. Through this exchange, it becomes apparent the children have wandered into a dangerous cavern and become lost, which establishes a side quest that will have you delving into the cave to rescue the little troublemakers (and no doubt defeating some nefarious enemies in the process). Presumably, you'll be able to pick up some nice items and such by completing side quests like this one.

What's more, Final Fantasy III's Mognet will let you use the DS's Wi-Fi capability to send mail to other players who have the game. Though it's not clear yet whether this will be possible over the Internet or merely through local wireless, the former option is certainly more sensible, since there wouldn't be much point in sending an in-game message to someone with whom you're already physically in the same place. At any rate, Square Enix says it'll be revealing more information on the Mognet feature as development continues, so in the near future we'll have more info on how exactly this will work.

Basically... email functionality? OH BOY!

Inhert Jul 20, 2006 11:58 PM

maybe they will add delivery too, like you can send some items to others players?

Vampiro Jul 21, 2006 01:21 AM

They better. It's quite obvious they can do a lot more with the wi-fi service, and if they waste it on simple things like mail... then they're missing out on a big feature that could generate a lot of excitement. It would be foolish.

BurningRanger Jul 21, 2006 06:52 AM

Calm down dude.

They're almost certain to tie it into the gameplay somehow. I.E. quests that can only be finished through the use of WFC.

Wait, what? How'd you read anger into that?

Japan game store trailer.

Why did they had to do this to me >_< No I have to buy DS as well =P Still I think they could make better about graphic engine...

Still soon remakes of FF games will be on all consoles =D 1&2 on PSX 3 on DS 4 on?

WraithTwo Jul 25, 2006 04:09 AM

The game is looking great. Something just feels good about being able to own FF 1-6 on my favorite handheld.

Yes. The in-store trailer is amazing, even if it's a handheld cam capture. The detail they put into those 3D models for the DS is just wonderful. Definately can't wait :)

Inhert Aug 2, 2006 01:58 PM

here this is a better version ^^

really I can't wait for this! this look amazing! and I never knew the DS could handle CG so beautiful! ^^

CuteChocobo Aug 3, 2006 10:12 AM

Gah, dunno why I can't see any of those two posted trailer >_<
Anyone know where I can DL a copy of it?

Final Fantasy III DS

Final Fantasy III is the only game in the Final Fantasy series that has yet to come to North America. However, Square-Enix is completely remaking it for the DS. Just about everything is being tweaked or modified, and the graphics are being completely re-done (3D). I must say, the graphics look better than I've seen on any other DS game, and the interface with the stylus looks interesting aswell (touch a monster in a battle to select it, etc). The load times are a bit long, but those will more than likely be improved closer to release. I will definately be picking up a copy, just as soon as I get a DSLite.

What do you guys think? Does this "new" Final Fantasy appeal to you, or do you think Square is bastardizing a work of art?

Um, there's already a thread about this game in the RPG Forum. Just wanted to point that out.

You made a nice opening post though.

What the fuck. I thought it would be in Mario's Warp Room, so I manually searched the forum to make sure it wasn't already there. I even searched all of GFF for the term "Final Fantasy III"; I suppose I didn't think the thread would use the abbreviation "FF".

Oh well, I fail yet again.

Indeed, merging threads for the hell of it. It's like crushing a tiny bit of remaining soap into another bar. Then it usually falls off anyway. :(
Made the thread title all fancy with words, too.

Does anyone know where I can find hi-res images of the CG character art (the individual ones, not the ones where they're all together in a cutscene or something)?

Sol Aug 28, 2006 12:30 PM

They have released a special edition Crystal Edition DS Lite in Japan along with the game, where the DS has a design on the cover by the game's character artist, Akihiko Yoshida. There's no news if it'll also be done here in the States, so no love for any collectors here. Play-Asia has a few images of the DS for the curious, but I don't think it's anything really stunning to look at. Certainly not worth the $350 it sells for.

Along the same lines, we also have a release date for the US! November 14th, according to ign.com

INFERNAL'S THAT BOX ART POSTIN' GUY. An American release of a Final Fantasy game with no shitty 3D rendered character standing around? Unpossible.

map car man words telling me to do things Sep 19, 2006 05:19 AM

Holy shit, are you sure that's not a shop someone on 4chan or say hotdog.org whipped up together as a concept? I'm confused though, usually amateur covers turn out completely awful (look at every single MGS4 cover out there), which would go some way of explaining why the covers used are so awful yet accepted in the first place.

A name on a white background is going to cause an uproar of course, so here is my suggestion for a better cover. We could have gone with the floating heads, but we wanted to try for a more unorthodox, NEW style, yet traditional, so we looked for inspiration from the classic NES covers since this is an old NES game. So here is a bunch of characters not really featured in the game, fighting a red monster also not in the game. It captures the spirit perfectly!

Infernal Monkey Sep 19, 2006 05:43 AM

That cover is pretty much perfect and sums up the game nicely, fighting missing red monsters! Maybe have some stairs in the background with a furious knight, or a giant angry face looming over a pit of fire or a forest of dead trees. =o

Xaekid Sep 20, 2006 12:21 AM

(not the one with the clown dude) wins overall IMO.

soapy Sep 20, 2006 10:47 AM

Has anyone played FFIII so far? What do you think? I am still debating whether or not I should get it, because it might end up just being sealed in a box and I'll just never get a chance. Unless it's totally worth it :)

edit: just realized the release date is like November... I could have sworn it was September but I think I got that mixed up with the OST.
