Stephen Fry (without a random 'e') does indeed narrate this. And it's a rather excellent job too.

Kilroy Sep 25, 2008 06:28 AM

Ah, damn. Well, I hate to resort to begging, but if anyone here finds a spare beta code, I'd be happy to accept it. And similar, if I get my hands on more than one code, I'll happily share them here.

Taco Sep 25, 2008 06:54 AM

Well, the US beta hasn't given out codes yet as far as I know, so we'll see if the opportunity arises for more.

Kilroy Sep 25, 2008 11:01 AM

Disregard my previous post, as I suck cocks...

LBP is adorable. I've spend some time just watching tutorials and Stephen Fry does a bang up job narrating them. So much <3!
It seems like my first SMB or Donkey Kong rip-off is near:33:

Here's a really cool Shadow of the Colossus-type level. -- http://www.gametrailers.com/player/u...ylist=featured

We don't allow embedded flash. For some really good reasons. Shoot us a link instead there instead, charlie.

The beta keys are region specific, as far as I know. You might have to ask some other people for one.

Kilroy Sep 26, 2008 03:34 AM

Oh god, this is such a time robber. I've spend HOURS on a tiny castle, and it's no where finished. The things you can make, especially when you've wrapped your head around the system is astonishing!
When I discovered how to make my Donkey Kong-freak throw flaming, rolling barrel-things, I literally whooped.

Call me a cynic if you will but there doesn't seem to be much interaction in that level. I mean, I don't know how the actual game controls work but it looks like they don't press any buttons once they get on the sledge thing. As platformer levels go, that one pretty much fails.

Whilst the idea of user generated content is nice, has anyone here actually played any levels or are you all just building things? Because otherwise, all you've got is a generic map editing programme with some nice looking pre-designed objects.

In this whole thread, there's been very little mention of how the game actually plays. Is the platforming element any good? Is there any sort of story at all? I mean, would anyone have bought the Forge without Halo 3 attached? No, but from reading this thread it seems a bit like what you're doing with this game.

Bigblah Sep 26, 2008 05:13 AM

That's what people did with Quake III, too =/

I've played a few levels, and they're really well done. There's some good fun platforming to be had and the controls are pretty damn solid. Also the built-in levels I've played are introductions to the game so they're fairly gentle, but even so they're clearly designed to be replayed and explored so you'll spot little things slightly off the path that require some real timing and thinking about to get to.

As for user created stuff, how's this for something a little more interactive: Tetris falls into LittleBigPlanet - PS3 Fanboy

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Sep 26, 2008 06:55 AM

Ha ha, that Tetris is pretty inventive. Still though, do you not think once the novelty value has worn off the interest in this will drop considerably? Is there some kind of rating system wherebuy you can grade other people's creations because that at least will preclude having to wade through 30,000 shitty copies of the first level of Mario to find something decent because you know that that and levels shaped like cocks are going to be the majority of the user generated output.

I guess it is only a cheap game but if I owned a PS3 and was potentially in the market for this, I think I'd want to see a bit more definition to the actual game experience before I bought it. That said, I never was a fan of platform games so even if it was an awesome stand-alone game I probably would think twice before picking it up.

It will be interesting to see the kinds of things people come up with though once the initial wave of utter shite passes and only people who've really got to grips with it are still making things.

Shenlon Sep 26, 2008 07:05 AM

As far as controls go its the basic side scroller controller it seems. Jump, punch, grab.
And from what I heard you have to complete the default levels in order to get more part for creating levels. But yeah the main focus will be the user created content and as any 2d platformer, it'll only be as fun as the level created.

Yep, Media Molecule have talked about various ways they're allowing people to rate, tag and recommend levels to people once the final thing ships. At the simplest level you can 'heart' a level, so say you like it. But upon finishing a user generated level you're asked to pick a word that describes it from a selection (with a 'none of the above' option that generates a new set of words) so you can see from the tags a level has, and the strength of those tags, what people think. I'm pretty sure they've also talked about a way that you can create lists of recommendations other people can search, such as your friends, or even link to other levels in a level. I believe there will be trophies to award people who share and link stuff as much as people who create stuff.

Also there's a quick reporting system for reporting anything offensive, which Mm can then check and act upon, and I think you can risk having your account banned if you get done for too many things like 'cock' levels or objects.

Hey all you people that missed out sneaking into the European beta, according to 1UP.com's newsletter there will be a little giveaway of some NA LBP beta keys.

There are more details here. Needless to say I'll be checking 1UP a few times a day over the weekend.

Aardark Sep 26, 2008 10:43 AM

Actually there are a bunch of NA sites that still have keys to give away, see the PlayStation blog.

Kilroy Sep 29, 2008 03:46 AM

It's pretty annoying. Every time I try to sleep, my brain throws up this new idea for a level.

Apart from that, I've tried a few of the user generated levels, and they're damn solid, I tell you. As far as I can tell, most of the levels made by GAF members should almost be included in the main game. Little Big Collosus or what's its name is very impressive.

Shenlon Sep 29, 2008 09:52 AM

well tons of sites today are giving away beta codes for those who can't wait some 20 days for the real game to come out. I've tried getting a few from some sites but with the lack of details, I have no effing idea in how to get them.

Taco Sep 29, 2008 10:55 AM

The official site seems swamped enough to the point that you'd swear they're dishing out keys, but I can't find where for the life of me, either.

I've been keeping my eye on a few blogs, too, but nobody's said anything about any other sites yet.

Shenlon Sep 29, 2008 01:10 PM

well gamepro seems to be the popular choice today since they announced beta codes being given away this morning but their servers keep crashing as i expected and should be back up and running normally within the hour. Not sure what we have to do to get one of these codes but they're referring to it as a "contest"
