I never liked them, for some reason. It's weird because they have all the stuff that makes good folk/viking metal, but I dunno, there must be something lacking somewhere. =/

Dizzy Jun 29, 2007 07:19 AM

Ok guys, I'm not an expert on the subject and I need some recommendations.

I've been listening to several bands lately (Ensiferum, Morifade, Alkonost, Highlord).

I'm looking for something like Alkonost. Do not say Nightwish please (I've listened every single album of them).

Also if you can recommend me any album that is a MUST. I know almost nothing about Metal and I need some directions.

niki Jun 29, 2007 07:31 AM

I couldnt advice anything exactly like Alkonost as they're pretty special, but do try some Arkona (rus one), Butterfly Temple, Svarga or Temnozor.

Dizzy Jun 29, 2007 11:36 AM

Thanks. I'm downloading their stuff right now. I couldn't find anything from butterfly temple yet, but that's just because i did a minimal search.

Woah, thanks for pointing them out.
They really are pretty sweet.
And that's gotta mean something coming from me. Usually folk-ish metal stuff is nothing I can really listen to for longer periods of time, cause, well, it mostly reminds me of some smelly guys in LARP outfits.

Today my ordered Symphony X CDs arrived and I'm one happy camper. :D
Of course compared to Dream Theater they're not as "up on high", but that's one of the things that I dislike with DT, they're great. They know their instruments and know good songwriting, but sometimes, I dunno, they're just a bit TOO good, too "sophisticated" if you know what I mean...

I'm still somewhat tempted to get my hands on the last 3 or so Therion CDs.

While we're talking about French, here is some random fact. Taake pronounces to "ta queue" which basically translates to "your dick". That makes for quite clumsy musical conversations ...

Oh God I love Taake !
wut!? Oh ...

:(

Ah bon? Je pensais que ça se prononçait "ta-ké", pas "ta-keu". Bizarre.

Funny, since I thought it was the worst one yet by far. I still bought it, though, but I kind of regret it since I probably won't listen to it very ofte. It's not really that bad, just vastly inferior to the others.

Songwriting, perhaps? ;) I have nothing against them but I didn't get into them much, and I'm a folk/viking metal whore.

Bleah. I don't really see how anyone can like it less than Pagan.

So, anyone here obsessed with Alcest yet?

guyinrubbersuit Jun 29, 2007 07:57 PM

I picked up Deicide - Stench of Redemption and Dream Theater - Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory.

The Deicide album is pretty awesome. I haven't heard the Dream Theater one just yet.

Here you go:

Whoa, Sabbat (UK) was added to the Wacken lineup... but it's at the same time as Falconer! :(

Krelian Jul 5, 2007 06:55 PM

I want to go to Wacken so fucking bad. :| I'm meant to be in France at the time, so I guess hopping over to Germany wouldn't be totally inconceivable...

guyinrubbersuit Jul 5, 2007 07:52 PM

Iron Maiden has been confirmed for Wacken next year. That's pretty damn awesome.

I really wish I could've gone to it last year or this year. :( Maybe next year?

Sian Jul 11, 2007 05:22 PM

Nightwish people here?

A few songs off their new album have leaked. I have them if anyone wants them.

Morrigan Jul 12, 2007 05:39 PM

No thanks.

guyinrubbersuit Jul 14, 2007 12:36 AM

I finally bought some more CDs. Here's what I got:

Summoning - Minas Morgul
Dream Theater - Systematic Chaos
Unexpect - In a Flesh Aquarium
Angra - Rebirth

Right now I'm listening to Summoning and I'm really enjoying it. It's quite a blind buy, I listened to some MP3s but nothing stuck out in my head, I just remembered all the praise this band got. The intro to the Passing of Grey Company sounds like it could be right at home in a 16-bit RPG. I love it.

Sabbat should take priority of course! Nothing beats British Shakespearean thrash!

I can wait (considering I just plundered their whole discography a few days ago, I can show a bit of restraint :p), but I just came across these guys and I really like them. Oceanborn = <3 Edenbridge has been hit or miss for that type of symphonic metal, but almost no bad Nightwish songs so far and I've picked my jaw off the floor a few times already.

Krelian Jul 14, 2007 11:14 AM

I love the samples I've heard of the new Nightwish.

Once was pants. Seriously fuck Tarja.

Will Jul 18, 2007 05:47 PM

I finally got around to buying the Systematic Chaos Special Edition. When a decent album is put out in DVD-A I can't resist. Now I have to wait until I can blast it somewhere without pissing people off. XD

QFTFT.

Suddenly Holopainen has learned to compose stuff for a full orchestra. Magicks, I say!

I've been shooting up on some Schattengang, Sombres Forêts and Wyrd recently (black metally stuff). And the new King Diamond is surprisingly good, so good that I might actually buy it at some point. Will be getting into KD's earlier work more after this.

Oh, and Systematic Chaos sucks incan balls.

Morrigan Jul 19, 2007 10:32 PM

What about Mayan balls?

Morrigan Jul 28, 2007 03:24 PM

My lame joke killed the thread, so I'll attempt to ressucitate it.

In three days I am taking a plane to Germany, to attend the almighty Wacken Open Air. Saxon, Sodom, Destruction, Immortal, Haggard, Sabbat (UK), Possessed, Torture Squad, Turisas, Type O Negative, Grave Digger, and the rest, here I come.

Shiny McShine Jul 28, 2007 10:20 PM

Anyone here ever heard of Accept? They were one of the very first thrash bands that not a whole lot of people knew about. can't remember what their first album was called, and I can't even remember if they had more than one, but you should definitely check them out.

Actually it looks like they've had quite a few albums. Funny, I only know one other person who's ever heard of them.

knkwzrd Jul 28, 2007 10:32 PM

I've always thought Accept was really over rated actually. People are always talking about how good Restless and Wild and Balls to the Walls are, but they're pretty much just some band who jumped from the Scorpions bandwagon onto the thrash bandwagon.

Morrigan Jul 28, 2007 11:45 PM

First, Accept is awesome, especially Metal Heart and Restless and Wild. Second, they were never thrash metal, WTF? They've always been straightforward, traditional heavy fucking metal.

I saw them at Wacken 2005 and they were mindblowing. I wasn't even a big fan then, but they converted me.
