What, two weeks of awesome in a row?

SuperSonic Sep 1, 2008 12:52 PM

Ah, I see what they've done. They're celebrating the 250th Virtual Console release with Super Mario RPG. Downloaded, I don't care if I already have the cartridge for my Super Nintendo.

Maybe next week we'll get Mega Man 9 on WiiWare, but that might be pushing it.

Buizel Sep 1, 2008 02:00 PM

I wonder why Nintendo decided to screwed PAL and themselves (meaning Japan) by charging 100 extra Wii Points?

In any case... *goes download/buy*

Cheezeman3000 Sep 1, 2008 06:41 PM

Wasn't the game never released in Europe and Australia or something? That would explain the 100 points extra.

In either case, this is a 100%, no-questions-asked no-brainer PURCHASE for me.

Sousuke Sep 1, 2008 07:14 PM

Agreed--probably a purchase I'll be making.

...Except I rarely USE my Wii anymore, don't have any Wii Points, and have the SNES cart [and a SNES] right beside my Wii.

Yes but it doesn't explain why Japan was ALSO 100 Wii Points more too.

nanstey Sep 3, 2008 10:27 AM

I'm just hoping Mega Man 9 comes out soon, but it will be at least the week after this coming one - I think they said they were releasing both Mega Man 1 and 2 to prime people for 9 - and 1 in the only game on there so far...

Well, they probably have to pay royalties to Square and Nintendo knows they can't trust the gaijins with that! Plus, you have to consider inflation. The recent Russia-Georgia conflict and the anticipation for House's fifth season have taken their toll on virtual currency.

wvlfpvp Sep 3, 2008 12:49 PM

I'm hoping for Earthbound, since it has an E rating now.

Oh, and I only paid 800 points.

Woo, it finally came out! And to think I almost let my ex borrow my Wii. This is relevant to my interests. :3:

Zergrinch Sep 5, 2008 01:14 AM

Interesting little-known game to be released in Japan, called 聖剣伝説2.

バーチャルコンソール タイトル一覧 - Wii

Otherwise known as Secret of Mana. Hopefully enough interest will be generated to warrant a remake for, say, the DS :)

Final Fantasy Phoneteen Sep 5, 2008 12:51 PM

A certain motherfucker accidentally threw away my Super Nintendo and Super Mario RPG along with it, so I'll probably pick it up. I must have a legitimate copy of it, I think.

Summonmaster Sep 5, 2008 01:27 PM

I never realized exactly how short Super Mario RPG is. I'm already at the Sunken Ship after playing from the Mushroom Kingdom within the entire span of yesterday! Maybe things are easier when you're older or when you already know what to do and when to grind :p

What I'm looking forward to next after the novelty of Super Mario RPG wears off is the upcoming release of Chou Aniki sometime this month. I have a soft spot for these deranged Japanese games.

LOL yeah it's the same situation for me too. It's fun playing it again nevertheless.

But it's MUCH fun to watch a friend who NEVER play it in the first place (he died on the "first boss"). :tpg:

FatsDomino Sep 6, 2008 04:36 AM

Maaaaan, I probably died on just about every other boss including the Hammer Bros. and Crocco. I had only watched friends play RPGs in the past, and before this game I'd only played Secret of Mana as the second player. So Super Mario RPG was in a sense MY very first RPG. Since I was new to how RPGs worked the game handed me my ass until I figured out how to grind and use a tiny bit of strategy.

SuperSonic Sep 6, 2008 09:58 AM

Super Mario RPG was the first RPG I had ever completed and enjoyed. My first RPG was Dragon Warrior back on the NES, but I had no idea what the hell I was doing. I was able to defeat those little slimes, but those damn dragons kept killing me and made my 10 minutes of exploring worth nothing.

Ugh, speaking of troubles when you first played Super Mario RPG:
Spoiler:
When I was first playing I had a lot of trouble with the second fight with Crocco. The part where he steals your items caught me off guard and I died a lot before I finally took him down.

FatsDomino Sep 6, 2008 10:15 AM

Don't feel too bad. I died like 8 times on Crocco before I figured him out or rather that I went and figured out the concept of grinding to level up. The tables then turned on Crocco. Oh how they turned.

Chaotic Sep 6, 2008 12:03 PM

Random question, but somewhat related to the game.

So a friend of mine was extremely nice enough to gift me Super Mario RPG with no strings attached, but we first had to take that long and tedious process of registering each other's names as well as waiting for the stupid Wii to register the Wii Codes.

We finally got them registered and he sent me the game... Now how long does this process normally take to recieve the game?

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Sep 6, 2008 12:07 PM

When I did it last year with Wii Secret Santa, it took a number of hours before it popped up. I'd wait until this evening and check again.

Hell, there was a point at which I was doing it with turnip to see if it'd work between canada and the US, and it took several DAYS to go through.

wvlfpvp Sep 6, 2008 01:30 PM

What the fuck is this about level grinding? I don't ever recall having to grind (or even do that "gain a level to beat the boss" thing) in any of my playthroughs . . . I mean, come on, level cap is 30!

FatsDomino Sep 6, 2008 03:11 PM

If you are new to RPGs and can't figure out some of the strategies and also initially suck at timed attacks then leveling up by grinding makes it much easier. Fuck you.

Angel of Light Sep 7, 2008 02:58 PM

It is great for Super Mario RPG to be released on the Virtual Console. I recall Super Mario RPG being one of the longest sitting rpg experiences I ever sat down and played.

You couldn't get me out of my room when I played that game for the first time. The first time I played the game I rented it and only had a weekend to try to finish so I tried to stay up as long as I could so that I could finish the game. I managed to get to the alarm clock boss inside the sword before I had to bring the game back. Thankfully the next weekend, it was available to rent again and my save file wasn't erased so I managed to finish it.

I haven't played it for a very long time and it would be something worth playing again since I never really done everything that you could do in that game. I thought the game had a lot of humour especially the statue scene with that overgrown crow.

Nintendonomicon Sep 8, 2008 08:11 AM

Cho Aniki (TG16 CD, 900 points) and Final Soldier (TG16, 700 points) are this week's games.

They're both import games, hence the slight increase in price.

Chaotic Sep 8, 2008 08:58 AM

Cho Aniki is some kind of crazy, isn't it?

In other news regarding the gift system, I finally got Super Mario RPG. Go figure they're not gonna send you a message saying that someone sent it. You actually have to go inside the store now.

And here I was waiting for two days to get that message.

Infernal Monkey Sep 8, 2008 09:08 AM

I got Cho Aniki when it hit the PAL VC a few months ago, I was a bit let down because it's not quite as weird as I expected (:(). It is a good shooter though, and the music is <3

I think there was a train boss at one point that made loud grunting noises, I'm not sure. It's all a blur.
