Crash "Long-Winded Wrong Answer" Landon Jun 22, 2007 10:51 PM

Man. Identity Crisis and I just had a LEGENDARY BATTLE. All Level 100 Pokemon.

He opened with a Crobat against my Breloom, which was a bad, bad omen for me. Things got worse from there.

I switched out to Dusclops. I Will-O-Wisped his Crobat and it hit me with Toxic. I Mean Look'd the Crobat and we traded blows until they both collapsed simultaneously.

I then threw out Milotic against his Salamence. It was pretty harsh and began dealing sizable chunks of damage. After the Salamence Dragon Danced, I had a bad feeling and switched over to Gardevoir, which was OHKO'd. Then my Meganium was critical'd before I could set up my defenses. My Weezing was similarly dispatched before it could land a successful Will-O-Wisp or Haze.

Breloom came back out and took a huge hit before putting the Salamence to sleep. Forced into switching, I.C. tossed Charizard out and it immediately took a heavy Focus Punch from Breloom. I brought Milotic back in and finished off the Charizard with a couple Water Pulses.

Skarmory was next for I.C. I kept healing and Water Pulsing. Skamory's couldn't keep Milotic poisoned thanks to Refresh, and I got a lucky confusion effect with a Water Pulse, which spelled the end for Skarmory.

I.C. then sent Flygon out, and I sensed a theme. It dealt some hefty Earthquake damage but I was able to heal successively and landed a critical Water Pulse with another confusion bonus. Flygon fell.

He tossed the sleeping Salamence out, hoping it'd awaken and finish me, but that didn't happen.

Then he brought out an Aerodactyl, which I knew was trouble. It Double-Edged and Stone Edged me a bit. I had to spend a lot of turns just Recovering. But I got in another Water Pulse and it, too, added confusion. I took a risk by attacking instead of healing, estimating that a normal Stone Edge wouldn't be quite enough to kill my Milotic, whereas my Water Pulse could finish him off. But if I.C. got a critical, which Stone Edge is known for, I'd be done. My Breloom wouldn't be fast enough to do anything.

My Milotic clung to 17 life and retaliated with a lethal attack, killing off Identity's last Pokemon.

But Good Lord, was it intense. A come from behind victory like that is rare. I.C. has a Salamence from Hell, and I was lucky enough to apparently have a Milotic from the same dark place.

I wish you could record battles. That'd be a keeper.

Final Fantasy Phoneteen Jun 22, 2007 11:40 PM

This kind of thing only reminds me that Battle Revolution comes out in three days.

Crash "Long-Winded Wrong Answer" Landon Jun 23, 2007 12:19 AM

Man. I so cannot afford a Wii right now.

RABicle Jun 23, 2007 12:30 AM

Man that sounds awesome Crash. I should probably stop complaining and start training. Right now I'm 100% focused on Pokémon Conneciton Tour though.

Acutally I might share a few movesets I'm aiming for with Gamingforce.

First up i should explain the metagame, it's level 50 only and übers are out. And it's not the one where you Pokémon get teleported to level 50 but level 50 MAX. So Dragonite and Tyranitar are out. For some reason the legendary trios haven't been ruled out, nor has fucking Latios and Latias but I'm betting they'll be removed at a later date.
Also, 3 on 3 battles with a ten minute limit which puts the squeeze on stalling and tank tactics.

So far the only two Pokémon that I've finalised and in the process of training in my team are
Crobat Jolly Natured
Confuse Ray
Hypnosis
U-Turn
Haze
havent decided on an item but in all likelyhood I'll just use silver power or bright powder. Or Black Sludge.
Most liekly this'll be my opener unless I see my opponent has a psychic heavy team. His strategy will be simple enough, confuse, hypnotise and then U Turn to get the fuck away from the psychic/electric/rock pokémon they will almost certainly switch in. Hopefully it'll be a psychic one because U-Turn will be an excellent surprise for them. Haze is there incase he makes a re-appearance to nullify some tank or curselax or whatever.

Gengar Modest Natured
Hynosis
Nightmare
Shadow Ball
Dream Eater
I'll equip it with that special boosting item or maybe Big Root.
Also i have to hold it's evolution to level 43 so that it learns Nightmare before level 50.
there arn't any sleep clauses, and I hate those anyway so dont be surprised if I put anotehr sleeper into this team later. Nightmare can be fantastic when used on a Blissey, as it's the only ghost move that hits normal type and takes off 25% of their health everyturn. It's relying on luck but I like to take my chances.

Arcanine Neutral Nature
Sunny Day
SolarBeam
Flareblitz
Extremespeed

Here's the sweeper. Mixed sweeper cos 3 v 3 rules. Might give him Charcoal and get a Flash Fire one for MASSIVE DAMAGE, (regardless of their weakspot.)

So every time I sent out a new pokemon about ten to twenty percent of their HP was knocked off. Still it sounded like you two had a great match.
Oh and Crash, I'm up for a lv.100 battle if you got time! :tpg:

Just to clarify, the Skarmory that you faced off against, Kairyu, was my newfound Lv. 50, actually. Crash faced off against my Lv.100 from the old days with a completely different (but still a stall-based) moveset. He wanted a Free Battle with Lv.100's, so I had to use the one that wouldn't die in five seconds. As I said before, I'm keeping the other Skarmory at Lv. 50 since its moveset isn't exactly the best for power-leveling.

EDIT:

Here's some movelists for comparison:

Lv. 50 Skarmory w/Leftovers
Stealth Rock
Spikes
Whirlwind
Fly

Lv. 100 Skarmory w/Leftovers
Toxic
Sandstorm
Fly
Roost

I was also half-expecting an Ice Beam the entire time Crash had brought his Milotic out. I wasn't quite expecting Water Pulse to own my entire team just as badly (or, heck, worse :tpg:)!

Kairyu Jun 23, 2007 12:58 AM

Ohh I see.

Hmm I suppose I should level up my team to 100 first. I assume playing on the preset modes (lv.50 or lv.100) will remove any IV stats you gained. Right?

Identity Crisis Jun 23, 2007 01:07 AM

I have no idea about the level caps in the matches. I keep hearing that they erase all your IV's, they cut your IV's in half, they leave your IV's alone, etc. In any of the above cases, it's probably a best bet if all high level battling is done in the Free Battle Room. (Aside: Do you want your Yache Berries, by the way? :p )

Rua Jun 23, 2007 01:27 AM

IVs are there too, individual values, are what they are called.

here's a calc thing.
http://www.legendarypokemon.net/ivcalc

it shows both ev's and iv's.

In my quest to get a Buizel cell strap, I snagged two Manaphy's. If you guys don't mind waiting a bit (need a Buizel first), I can sell them for 2 bucks US, That should cover shipping. Any takers? Image is below:

Final Fantasy Phoneteen Jun 23, 2007 12:33 PM

There seems to be a bit of a water theme going there, but even if you count Pikachu for having Surf, what the hell is Chatot doing in there?

Freelance Jun 23, 2007 12:35 PM

Good question. I have no clue.

Anyway, I'll probably end up getting a few more non-Buizels too before I get one, so those will also be for sale. Wheee...

Oh, and I might as well add that I prefer Paypal, and you don't actually pay me until I can send it out. You'll just be put 'on a list.'

Rua Jun 23, 2007 01:11 PM

no goldeen =(, no horsea, no milotic, no starmie =(. I'll just look for another set.

Buizel Jun 24, 2007 01:14 AM

Looks more like it's something for the 9th movie (yes, they are STILL making the Pokemon movie; movie 10th coming out in Japan next month!). XP

^-^ Jun 24, 2007 02:29 PM

Could someone rate these sets for me?
  • Dragonite (Lum Berry) <Adamant Nature> [EV: 252 ATK, 252 SPD]: Dragon Dance, Fire Punch, Dragon Claw, Earthquake
  • Venusaur (Black Sludge) <Modest Nature> [EV: 252 HP, 126 DEF 126 Sp.DEF]: Grass Knot, Leech Seed, Toxic, Sludge Bomb
  • Empoleon (Leftovers) <Modest Nature> [EV: 252 Sp.ATK, 100 DEF, 152 HP]: Agility, Surf, Ice Beam, HP Electric/HP Flying/Grass Rope/Luster Cannon/Filler (Any Special Attack)
  • Lucario: (Life Orb) <Jolly Nature> [EV: 252 ATK, 252 SPD, 6 HP] Close Combat, Swords Dance, Stone Edge, Extremespeed
  • Milotec (Leftovers) [EV: 252 Sp.DEF, 252 HP, 6 HP]: Surf, Ice Beam, Rest, Sleeptalk
  • Gallade (Leftovers/Life Orb) <Jolly Nature> [EV: 252 ATK, 252 SPD, 6 HP]: Stone Edge, Hypnosis/Will-O-Wisp, Reflect/Thunder Wave/Leaf Blade, Earthquake, Close Combat, Swords Dance
  • Blastoise (Leftovers) [EV: 252 HP, 252 DEF 6 HP]: Surf, Yawn, Rapid Spin, Aqua Ring/Protect
  • Weavile (Life Orb) <Jolly Nature> [EV: 252 ATK, 252 SPD 6 HP]: Ice Punch, Swords Dance, Blade Test, Pursuit
  • Arcanine (Choice Band/Life Orb) <Jolly Nature> [EV: 252 ATK, 252 SPD]: Thunder Fang/Howl, Extremespeed, Flare Blitz, Crunch
  • Arcanine (Leftovers/Hot Rock/Wisdom Glasses/Life Orb) <Timid Nature> [EV: 252 Sp.ATK, 252 SPD]: Flamethrower, Sunny Day, Solar Beam, Dragon Pulse/HP Ice
  • Arcanine (Choice Specs) <Timid Nature> [EV: 252 Sp.ATK, 252 SPD]: Fire Blast, Dragon Pulse, HP Water/HP Ice/HP Electric, Will-o-Wisp
  • Absol (Scope Lens/Choice Scarf) <Adamant/Jolly Nature> [EV: 252 ATK, 252 SPD]: Night Slash, Psycho Cutter, Stone Edge, Me First

Also looking for good movesets/natures/ev spreads/hold items for:
  • Smeargle (I have a base moveset for him: Trick Room, Spore/LockOn, Clamp/Wrap/Fire Spin, Endeavor. I just can't think of a good nature/EV spread/hold item for this guy. But then again, he has to be level 1 only.)
  • Magmortar (was wondering if Flamethrower/Smoke Erupt, Solarbeam/Will 'o' Wisp, Sunny Day, Thunder Bolt/Psychic were good movesets. Also searching for a good nature/EV spread/hold item for this guy.)
  • Electivire (Life Orb) <Lonely Nature> [EV: 252 SPD, 252 ATK, 6 Sp.ATK]: Thunderbolt, Earthquake, Cross Chop, Ice Punch - basically have everything down for this guy, just don't know a good hold item.
  • Luxray (Thunder Fang/Ice Fang/Fire Fang, Crunch/Spark, Roar, Hidden Power/Attract, needs a hold item, EV spread, and nature.)
  • Leafeon (having trouble choosing from Grass Whistle/Scissor Cross, Synthesis/Swords Dance, Aerial Ace/Baton Pass for it's final three moves. Leaf Blade is already a must, just don't know those last three, along with EV spread, nature, and hold item.)
  • Crobat (looking for a good Hazer, was wondering if Scheme, Sludge Bomb, Shadow Ball/Dark Pulse, Air Slash would be a good moveset, also need nature/EV spread/hold item.)
  • Swampert (I really don't know what to use with this guy. Being the only player in the area, I've never really gone up against anybody with one. From looking at other builds online, I came to a consensus of Waterfall/Stone Edge/Surf/Rest, Earthquake, Ice Punch/Snow Slide, Stealth Rock, Curse, but I don't know what to choose, along with the usual (natures/EV spread/hold item.)
  • Dragonite (was also looking into one of these guys, was thinking maybe <Adamant Nature>, (Life Orb/Leftovers): Dragon Dance, Outrage, Fire Punch, Earthquake. Just needs an EV spread for this guy.
  • Gyrados (was thinking of some decent hold items (Magnifying Glass/Shell Bell), and I also want to weed out the moves (Taunt, Dragon Dance, Earthquake/Stone Edge, Return/Aqua Tail), and of course, I need a good EV spread.
  • Ambipom - I have two sets for this guy:
  • (Choice Band) <Adamant Nature>: Fake Out, Double Attack, Pursuit, Somersault/Aerial Ace[/INDENT]
  • (Leftovers) <Jolly Nature>: Scheme, Baton Pass, Agility/Substitute/Fake Out, Double Attack
but I don't know what to choose. I also need good EV spreads.
  • Porygon-Z with a modest nature, I was thinking of going with: Tri Attack, Scheme, Thunderbolt, Ice Beam, which seems to be the basic moveset. I just don't know what EV spread I should use with him.
  • Dusknoir - I've seen so many different builds of these, it's not even funny. I was thinking maybe an Impish nature with the moveset of: Pain Split, Will-o-Wisp, Shadow Punch, Confuse Ray/Fire Punch. I just don't have an EV spread.
  • Rhyperior just like Ambipom, I had two sets
  • <Careful Nature>: Megahorn, Earthquake, Stone Edge/Hammer Arm, Curse
  • <Adamant Nature>, Choice Band): Stone Edge, Earthquake, Megahorn, Focus Punch/Avalanche
and again, I didn't know what to use, or a good EV spread.
  • Gengar this guy concludes the "multi-build" sets I have. as a closing, I have 3 sets, but from research, there are atleast 4-5 out there right now that everybody likes (of course, they're missing some things, but.. that's just because I'm not so great at this sort of stuff yet.) This request for this guy isn't just a "fix-me-up", but also a "what I've chosen" out of those five. They are:
  • (Choice Specs/Black Sludge/Petaya Berry) [EV: 252 Sp.ATK, 252 Sp.DEF, 6 HP]: Thunder Bolt, Energy Ball/HP Ice/Focus Blast/Substitute, Shadow Ball, Hypnosis
  • (Brightpowder), Mean Look, Confuse Ray, Toxic, Nightshade/Shadow Ball/Dark Pulse/whatever
  • (Leftovers), Focus Punch, Thunderbolt/Fire Punch/Psychic, Substitute, Ice Punch/HP Ice/HP Grass/Sludge Bomb/Shadow Ball/Giga Drain
They're all missing natures, and two of them are missing EV spreads, so again, I apologize. Mostly, I see builds of Gengar with Energy Ball/HP Ice/Focus Blast/Substitute, Shadow Ball, Hypnosis, with the final move ranging from the elemental punches (Fire, Ice, Thunder), Substitute, Thunderbolt, HP ___ (element), or Giga Drain. It seems this guy is very versitile. For my request, I'm looking for the natures I should be using, along with EV spreads on the other two. I remember seeing something about being able to use a Hasty nature on a Gengar...
  • Skunktank - I also read somewhere that this guy can be quite mean too. I decided to choose a moveset for him as: Poison Stab, Blade Test, Toxic, Rest. But I'm not so sure. Is this good? I also need an EV spread, and a hold item/nature as well.

And anything else you can think of, in terms of what good builds are. Thank you!

I don't know why the battle rooms would mess with EV/IV stats. If they did, that wouldn't be fair at all. That could kill a trainer's team completely.

I'm probably just as stumped as you are on the situation (if not more). Rua seems to know more about how the battle rooms are configured, so he may be the guy to provide an answer to this puzzle.

It is. Some of those I made before the game came out to the states, I'm sorry.
*edit* also, does anybody know if there's an HP type for "Normal"?

Have they changed Sleep Talk to its old ways? Back in Silver/Gold/Crystal, it was near broken. I had a Sleeptalking Kingdra with that very same moveset and it was unstoppable. I mean, it never got beat. Back then, you could use Rest while asleep and it would heal you. When Ru/Sa came out, Rest was changed so that it couldn't be used if the Pokemon was already asleep. You got no life gain and it was a wasted turn. Since Sleep Talk is random, the "SleepRester" tactic became incredibly unreliable.

Unless they're now allowing Rest to work while your Pokemon is already asleep, then I'd go with a totally different moveset.

Weavile (Life Orb) <Jolly Nature> [EV: 252 ATK, 252 SPD 6 HP]: Ice Punch, Swords Dance, Blade Test, Pursuit
I'm not sure what "Blade Test" is. I do, however, know that Pursuit is less than ideal. I've been messing with Weavile and most people seem to know that it has great offense but very poor defense. I'm finding that more people are willing to trade blows, knowing that even a neutral attack will take a good chunk out of Weavile. This makes Pursuit's purpose rather moot. If you want STAB, stick with Night Slash.

I'd also recommend breeding Aerial Ace. It'll do some strong damage to most Fighting or Bug types, which are Weavile's biggest foes. By all rights, a Heracross should own a Weavile, but a Weavile who knows Aerial Ace is gonna win that fight 90% of the time.

Swords Dance is okay, but not always needed. It's not like Weavile doesn't already have a ludicrous attack stat. What with Weavile's poor defenses, I'm not certain you can always waste a turn powering up. Better to pass some attack power.

^-^ Jun 25, 2007 12:22 AM

Well, the Sleeptalking Milotis is used because of it's pokemon ability, and no, you can't use the move if you're already asleep, but you can use sleeptalk. With the Ice beam and surf, you're already getting STAB damage, and then with the 1.5x going into defense from Milotic's ability...

You've got a pretty strong killer.

Blade Test... just ignore that one. I was making some of these before the games came out to america, so I was basing some of them off of some people's translations and such..

Rua Jun 25, 2007 12:32 AM

Its not really the battle tower that does it. Its just something thats in the game to say pretty much.
The difference between a level 50 cap and a level 100 cap is that EVs and IVs only matter half as much as level 100.

You want a level 100 cap if you breeded for IVs and EV trained your pokemon

You want a level 50 cap if you have no idea what I just said.

I don't think its really good explaination but I think the EV and IV calc thing I posted also has explaination within it also. Back in my older post or just look here.

^-^ Jun 25, 2007 08:04 AM

Well, it's just news to me. I've been using that calculator for stat purposes... I'll have to check this out.

Had fun battling Elixir last night (even though his FC changed..?)

I can see why he was angry though, if what you say is true. I did EV train all the pokes in my team when I battled him, and if what you say is true, then I can guess you can say it was a slaughter..

The reason why I started to play was to have fun with people, and instead, everybody I did get to play (this was way back when R/B/Y was out) I got beaten, badly. And this was why. So, through the years, whenever someone asked to play me, I would decline. Well, Pearl and Diamond come out, with online battling, and I'm like "Maybe I should play again" but this time, I decided to learn. So I decided to study how people got their pokemon to be so powerful, and stumbled upon EV and IV training, Hidden Power movetypes, etc. And here I am.

Is EV training pokemon really disliked around here?

Lacerta Jun 25, 2007 12:11 PM

"Blade Test" was the original translation of Night Slash before the official translations came out. It gets STAB bonus so it's okay.

EV/IV Training I guess would be frowned upon by those who don't have enough time or don't want to bother doing it. I don't battle so it doesn't matter to me either way, but I wouldn't necessarily care about EV training since I can do it too if need be.

^-^ Jun 25, 2007 12:30 PM

ok, I'll have to make a note about the translation. Thanks again, Lacerta. You've been a big help for me.
