Finntroll and Wintersun releasing new albums next year too!

Ah, curse you niki for exposing me to this type of music! :p

Vampiro Dec 19, 2006 07:33 AM

The Wintersun album that should be out by now :(

Vampiro Dec 19, 2006 09:26 AM

Ah perfect. I've always liked live shows that involved the use of incredibly long songs. If only more drone bands would come to Toronto...

niki Dec 19, 2006 10:18 AM

You consider Moonsorrow to be drone?

Vampiro Dec 19, 2006 10:25 AM

... no. But drone bands are usually known to have songs over twenty minutes in length and only a few come to Canada every year. Which is why I would like more.

niki Dec 19, 2006 10:27 AM

Gotcha.

And meh, I live 2 hours by plane away from Finland, and Moonsorrow never toured here. ='(

Vemp Dec 19, 2006 12:15 PM

At least you still get to watch/see shitloads of awesome metal acts. I don't.

Apparently, we get the shitty MTV bands. I can't remember a single metal band that toured here. And most people in here are into emo/core "metal" acts. So I'm not surprised if Avenged Sevenfold will tour here, I mean Limp Bizkit did, and most people in here consider them metal.

Also, any of you have a Nomans Land's "Sea Battlefield" track? Mine seems to be broken (it's from their Raven Flight album).

Vampiro Dec 20, 2006 07:05 AM

Not sure exactly where you live, but you'd be surprised where various metal bands show up. Only recently I found a decent venue that showcases black metal bands and the like.

Oh and yeah, I do have that song. Not sure if you want it over AIM or whatever or just uploaded. But I can give it to you.

Morrigan Dec 21, 2006 11:16 PM

Where are you, Vampiro? Montréal or Québec City?

I'm a bit lukewarm about the new Moonsorrow (and I'm a bit of a fangirl). Long songs are good, but 30 minute songs...? It has some drawn-out moments, I'm afraid. Maybe it'll grow on me.

I sincerely hope they'll play excerpts of the new album rather than a full song, because a full song takes up way too much material from their previous albums.

Edit: Eek! Just noticed that the flag below my profile was the US one. Gotta change that immediately...

Helloween Dec 22, 2006 02:54 PM

Helloween's Live on Three Continents DVD is set to release Feb. '07. Can't wait.

Also, if all goes acording to plan, Dream Theater, Helloween, and Rush will all have new albums out in '07 as well.

Also picked up Majestic by Gamma Ray not too long ago. I've listened to it through about 4 times now, and i must say i'm impressed, but in a different way than normal.

They're not as solo heavy as Helloween or nearly as much as Dream Theater. They put much more focus on packing as much energy in as they can, while still maintaining a catchy melody. Right now, i'd problem describe them as a more modern version of Iron Maiden, or a heavier Helloween.

I must say, Hansen's voice has changed, and yet stayed comfortably familiar since his days as the Helloween front man. I really love the exileration i get from this album, and am really glad i finally got around to actually buying a full album of theirs.

I suggest Gamma Ray to any metal lover, especially if you're into Iron Maiden or Helloween. Anyone agree? Disagree?

St. Catharines, Ontario. Right across Lake Ontario from Toronto.

Anywho, I actually hope they play the full thirty minute song. I'm quite used to exceptionally long songs, even the ones ranging between an hour to three hours. Plus, there's just something about, in the case of let's say Sunn, a twenty to thirty minute live song that really adds to the show. People aren't as uppity and energetic, usually just experiencing the show and really listening. It's a completely different experience somehow, and it's an excellent one.

Yeah, but the people come to Sunn O))) shows would be disappointed if they didn't have a song that long.

I just mean that a Moonsorrow/Sunn O))) concert comparison isn't really fair. It's a totally different environment.

Vampiro Dec 23, 2006 01:16 PM

True enough. Then again I couldn't really care less what the rest of the crowd wants. It's just something I would like to see. Whether they do it or not, I don't know. It would just be something I would like to experience. Plus, it would be a good way to close out the night. That, or play it right before "Tulkaapa Äijät!" for the closer. It would be quite the great send off.

Fucking seconded.

guyinrubbersuit Dec 23, 2006 05:08 PM

I just came back from Metal Devastation, a local underground metal store and got myself a Death - Scream Bloody Gore tshirt and my friend an Emperor shirt.

That store is so fucking awesome, it has a wide selection of metal from black, death to anything inbetween. It has alot of hard to find stuff as well as a great selection of shirts. I need to go back with more money and my CD want list to get the discs I want.

Vampiro Dec 23, 2006 05:56 PM

Goddamnit. I was supposed to go to a local show called "Black Xmas" that included Woods of Ypres (along with Moonlyght, Wolven Ancestry, Dreamscapes of the Perverse, The Green Evening Requiem, Empyrean Plague and Deathmarch) and they canceled it. So fucking lame. Ah well, they're playing with Moonsorrow on the fifteenth at the same location... which now that I think about it might explain why it was canceled...

WolfDemon Dec 24, 2006 11:06 AM

Okay, so at the risk of being torn asunder by the true Metal fans, I didn't really get into this genre of music until I saw Metalocalypse. Can anyone recommend a few bands that Dethklok may have been influenced by?

knkwzrd Dec 24, 2006 11:20 AM

I've never seen the show. What do they sound like?

WolfDemon Dec 24, 2006 11:30 AM

Their Myspace page has a few of their songs in it. Also, if you've played Guitar Hero 2, their song Thunderhorse is on it.

Generic guttural vocals backed by speed/death instruments.

Just, idk, listen to any death metal band. Kalmah is about as close as it gets. Though you'll probably find something to like about Nile, Immolation, and possibly the Chasm. The latter of which is the best death metal band, in my opinion. Though Nile and Immolation can sometimes boarder on brutal death...

guyinrubbersuit Dec 25, 2006 10:10 PM

So I got Vital Remains - Horrors of Hell and Into Cold Darkness; Lamb of God - Sacrament; and Unearth - Strings of Conscience for Christmas. I'm really digging the VR albums.

Also got Iron Maiden - Rock in Rio and Lamb of God - Killadelphia DVDs.

knkwzrd Dec 30, 2006 01:14 PM

Alright, so I just got the new reissue of The Obsessed's Lunar Womb record. Sounds great, but they fiddled with the cover art which is a bit of a downer.

I know I've seen the painting they used for the cover somewhere else, but I can't place it. Anyone know what the name of the painting is or who did it?

Sounds like a hell of a gig. I like Moonlyght and am curious about how Woods of Ypres would sound live. Interesting band by the way. Can't say I love them, but it sure is an experience everytime one of their albums randomly shows up on my playlist. I heard someone calling them "summer black metal", once. =p
