Kojima has pretty much been saying that this will be the last Metal Gear Solid game ever since the development started. Of course, he's said that about previous parts as well, but he most likely really means it now. I'd imagine he's pretty sick of working on one series for ten years. Good that he's ready to move on instead of continuing to cash in on this indefinitely.

Maybe a new Snatcher game! Neo Kobe, toot

Edit: oh hey, it actually is

Slayer X Jul 11, 2007 03:42 PM

We'll see. Kojima said that about even MGS1 so, I'll believe it when I see it. Also even if it is Kojima's final MGS, he's said that the team will keep on making MGS games until they feel it's the write time to stop and that Kojima will always be available to the team if they have any questions or anything.

In other words if Kojima does leave the MGS team, development will just continue in the way it did for MGS:PO

Hantei Jul 11, 2007 03:50 PM

Holy shit! The MGS4 trailer is already in the PS store (along with alot of other trailers)! I wasn't expecting it to pop up that quickly.

eprox1 Jul 11, 2007 03:52 PM

Yeah, I just saw that as well. I'm literally downloading about 13 different things write now from E3. My download queue even got too full, so I have to wait on some things :(.

Hantei Jul 11, 2007 03:54 PM

Haha me too, I'm just downloading everything right now. Damn, if I had known this stuff would be in the store this soon I would have checked earlier. Ahhh, hopefully the MGS4 trailer finishes downloading before I gotta go to work.

EDIT:
Just saw the trailer, damn is Naomi on Liquid's/Ocelot's side? Vamp vs. Raiden, about time, and it looks like Raiden's blade is heated too. And man the english performances are turning out great too (though slightly disappointed with the absence of Naomi's accent as I'm partial to the perfomances in MGS and not TTS)! Anyone else kinda dissapointed that they've yet again discluded the MGS theme in the trailer?

Simultaneous, Early 2008 release! Hopefully by early 2008 they mean January.

Nobody dropped the direct download link for the HD trailer yet?

There you go, looks very polished. Character and especially facial animation is out of this world. This trailer is simply amazing.

eprox1 Jul 11, 2007 05:12 PM

Raiden vs. Vamp = awesome. Nuff' said.

Slayer X Jul 11, 2007 08:18 PM

Yup, this is gonna be my killer-app of the fiscal year... GUARENTEED!

Simo Jul 12, 2007 12:37 AM

Gorgeous trailer and the remodelling of Meryl is much better and approved.

Vamp dislocating his neck to avoid the sword was awesome. That said the trailer was a little dissapointing given it's short length with no gameplay and overall lacked the "epic" feeling of the other trailers. Next week should be much better with Kojima and the demo and hopefully some more info.

Slayer X Jul 12, 2007 12:52 AM

Yeah, if they could give us a nice 8-10 min gameplay vid of continueous play and not just scenes that will make up for the shorter than usual trailer.

However I'll take what I can get because really, I don't need reasurance that the game is going to be good, I just want to be entertained.

As for cisual quality, here's a pic of Meryl's unveiling, notice the improvement?

I liked the old Meryl one far more better than the new on e >.< especially the hair...Come one who didn't laugh when she turn her head and you say that bg block of polygons with an hair texture on it... I would have tough that by now and with the visual quality of MGS4 they would have come with a better way to do hair...

I understand the face change though. in the old version she still basically look identical to herself in twin snake. So I guess changing her and giving her a more mature look and less rookie is better. Still I can't get that hair out of my head, I can't believe they showed that in a trailer XD

makura Jul 12, 2007 02:12 AM

I liked the old version of Meryl too. This new one, she just seems like a generic background female soldier but with Meryl's hair shape. I was hoping she kept some distinct facial feature.

At the end of his presentation, Kojima said he's going to do a gameplay demo in Tokyo next week.

What I'd like to know is, will this game finally, FINALLY have multiple audio tracks, so I don't have to listen to the english voicetrack?
While it might not be bad per se for a videogame it absolutely PALES in comparison to the japanese one...

Aardark Jul 12, 2007 03:59 AM

No it doesn't, you're just a weeaboo.

makura Jul 12, 2007 04:16 AM

Yeah, the Japanese voice of Snake does fit his aged look whereas the English version doesn't really fit the old Snake that well. Towards the end of Snake's part in the trailer he did kinda have his voice a little bit lower and gruntier(?), but I wonder if David Hayter can keep it up throughout.

Am I the only one who's not too impressed by Vamp's and Raiden's dance fighting?

I prefer the term "elitist prick", but thanks for the roses. :P

Hantei Jul 12, 2007 06:58 AM

I agree with Simo, the trailer didn't feel as epic as the previous ones, though it did add a nice little twist (Naomi in league with Liquid Ocelot?).

Oh, anyone else catch the line by Naomi? "Nine years ago, at Shadow Moses..." The Plant chapter in MGS2 is 4 years after Shadow Moses, so that makes MGS4 about 5 years after MGS2.

How about the guy with the shades and mask? Anyone else think it's Raiden? Kinda sounds like him (plus he's got blond hair), and it does seem rather odd how he's unaffected by the nanomachine/FOXDIE (whatever Liquid Ocelot did) activation. BTW, did anyone catch when he exclamed "Jonathan"? Could this be Johnny Sasaki? Oh and Meryl and her unit's suits look very similar to Big Boss' sneaking suit from MGSPO.

The visuals looks great, except for some of the weird jaggy looking shadows. Though, did anyone else think that the framerate seemed kinda low, like the scenes were a little choppy at times, doesn't seem like it's running consistantly at 60fps (if I remember correctly that claim was made).

Story-wise, does anyone else think that they might do a sort of chapter/time-gap-thing like they did with MGS2 and MGS3. Eg. Begin the game with some events that happend 1-3 years (MGS2 Tanker Chapter, MGS3 Virtuous Mission) ending the act with something dramatic before the real meat of it all starts. Perhaps Snake obtains the Snake Eye (I think that's what it was called) during the 2nd part of the game? Or rather Raiden obtaining the exoskeleton in the 2nd act. Or maybe what we saw in the trailer was the beginnning part of the game.

And man that Raiden vs. Vamp scene really makes me wonder if you truely can't play as Raiden. I mean it looks like they're an even match, and with the way they closed it almost seems as if it leads into a boss battle.

The soundtrack was pretty good from what was in the clip, guessing it's something that HGW wrote. Just really disappointed that they still haven't played the new mix of the MGS theme.

Ahhh, I really hope a demo hits the PSN after TGS or sooner. Cause early 2008 is too long of a waiting time. No doubt the only reason why it's that late is cause it's simultaneous (*cough* the PAL release *cough*).

I'm also curious as to whether this MGS will include a dual audio track as well. It should be possible considering the storage space available on Blu-ray disc, then again in one of the Kojima Productions Report podcasts they kinda hinted at it possibly not happening.

Though I personally thought the english performances were great and wouldn't be upset if the japanese track wasn't included. Thumbs up to the return of Debi Mae West, Patric Zimmerman and Jennifer Hale, but WTF is Cam Clarke? Just isn't the same without him voicing Liquid. It also looks like the lips/mouth-movements will be somewhat insync with the english performances. So it might kinda weird/awkward when you switch to the japanese track. Anyway, assuming it's not included, you could always just import the Japanese version of game if you want the japanese track that badly (remember region free on games).

A piece of speculation: As this material is probably rendered in real time in the game's own engine maybe they've implemented a code that lipsyncs automatically. I've read something about such stuff before, maybe they're doing it here. Or they just sync it for every voice track seperately...

Hmm... But if the PAL release doesn't have the Japanese voice track on it, I'll probably go for an import at a later date. Just for being a total MGS fanboi. :p

Slayer X Jul 12, 2007 12:35 PM

I wouldn't be surprised if the lip-sync was real time. If I'm not mistaken Oblivion had real time lip-sync with the facegen engine. It wasn't too good, but it was a step in an interesting direction.

As for the dual audio track, I dought that they would include the Japanese VA. This is nothing more then a gut feeling but Hideo and company has always felt confident in their english VA work and have yet to show any interest in including Japanese VA in their NA and PAL versions.

The game could come out and I could be totally wrong, however it's just what I feel. Which is fine for me at least because while Snake's VA may not be accurate for his age, you lose all the other russian, and other foreign accents by going to the Jap VAs. Also I wouldn't want to have to listen to an alternate VA for Otacon... too many good memories.

I hope they didn't just take Oblivion's technology and plop it into their game, though. Holy crap Oblivion's lipsyncing was hilarious when you paused the game during speech, the guy's mouth would be 10 seconds behind the words he was saying.

Slayer X Jul 12, 2007 01:48 PM

Don't worry it's not the same tech. I was just using that a an example of the kind of tech that MGS4 "might" be using which of couse would be 100% custom to the game, not 3rd party.

That's one of the beefs I have with Snake Eater. It's set in Russia, yet everybody speaks totally perfect American English. Yes, they're actually all speaking russian, but it's not even hinted at. The soldiers in Sons of Liberty all had russian accents...

And, yes, I wouldn't have recognized this with a jap VA, but I doubt it would've bothered me there as much as it did with the English VA. :/

I love the new model as it looks like, for lack of better explaination, like a real woman compared to her old "anime" like look.

Actually all the models shown in the trailer look much improved with Snake looking very close to TGS unveiling trailer.

Yeah that's what I was thinking too given he's unaffected by whatever Liquid did and the voice and tips of blond hair are a dead giveaway.

Well Kojima has said the game would take place in more than one country so it'd have to jump around a bit, whether or not it'll be in similiar fashion as MGS2's chapters remains to be seen but you can already see some jumping with Raiden if that is him with Meryl since Mecha-Raiden...
Spoiler:
..is supposed to be 95% cyborg with only his head and spine as the organic part when we see him as the ninja. No doubt explains why he can sustain the damage he does including impaling himself and Vamp on his sword.

I doubt it mainly because Raiden non-playable in MGS4 is like Kojima's middle finger to the naysayers and negative group of Raiden in MGS2. "You bitched about Raiden and only playing as Snake briefly in MGS2, well now you'll only play as Snake even if Raiden is super whacked out bad motherfucker that you wish you could play as".

It'd be nice to have the option though as the Japanese VO is often better than the English counterpart given that Akio Otsuka is a genuine badass while Hayter tries to hard to sound like one but then the English VO is also alot more colourful, what with the accents, so I wouldn't want to lose that either. It's a shame Naomi doesn't have her hint of a British accent anymore but you could always argue that up to losing it during her 9 years absence underground...

Torte Jul 13, 2007 06:09 AM

That Ninja-Vamp fight was fantastic! But.. it was kinda long, for whatever the heck it was supposed to be. I mean to say that it's good for show, but I don't wanna watch 5 minutes of cutscenes before a 10 minute long CODEC convo followed by another 5 minute cutscene, just to fight a damn boss.
