Pretty: A girl who is beautiful, elegant, one who can look great without showing alot of skin. The kind of girl that painters want to make portraits of. I don't think pretty is anything like cute however. Some guys lump them together, but to me pretty is a more mature, womanly look, where cute is a more girly look.

Hot: A girl with sex appeal. The type that shows off her body. Basicly a more "slutty" kind of attractive. I don't mean to say that hot girls are all sluts, but I just don't know how else to word it.

Both are good, but of the two I prefer pretty. It's also possible to be both at the same time, but it's rare to see a girl like that. Often times the pretty girls have a better personality, but not always.

The best example I can think of to show the differance bewteen the two is actually from anime LOL. If you've seen "Ah! Megami Sama" you'll know what I mean. Belldandy is a pretty girl, Urd is a hot girl.

"Pretty girls usually have a better personality." Aaahahaha. That's probably about as ridiculous as the mind-numbing foolishness reached in the Gamer Girl vs. Hot Girl thread.

Can I ask why is the distinction necessary?

For all I care, they are still women, with female sexual organs.

Well, this was actually an interesting conversation I had with my manicurist today. We were talking about men with height-deficiencies and how they generally tend to be the nicer, more considerate, gentlemen like guys. The theory is that tallness is one of the most desireable traits in a man (apparently, I never knew the difference because ALL guys are taller than me...usually) to the general female public, thus the idea that short guys are more conscious about their bodies (tend to work out/ keep in good shape) and tend to try harder on the relationship aspect (in other words, not being an asshole).

So my application to that on the female side was that it applies to women too. Sure there are ugly women who are totally not nice people. But, I've always believed that I'm not one of those good-looking people, so I valued how people would view my inner beauty. As I shared this with my beautician (whom I've known for almost 3 yrs now), she told me that was the most endearing thing (to her) about myself.

My response to that was: "Can I help it that I have a more attractive personality compared to those 5'10" C-cup gorgeous women that can probably get anyone to do anything for them? C'mon, I gotta compete somewhere, and height or boobs ain't getting me anywhere so there's not much else to work with!" It was meant to be a joke and we both got a good laugh out of it.

Is this limited to physical descriptions? If so, "pretty" people are those who look pleasing to the eyes, attractive and beautiful in a way that a man and a woman can appreciate his/her beauty in a non-malicious manner. "Hot", to my understanding, are people who tend to ooze in sex appeal, usually the ones who give an erotic "feel" the moment you lay your eyes on them.

It's like reading a fashion magazine and a porn mag, the difference is clearly there.

I guess the distinction would be, I would rail a woman like Selma Hayek, but I'd be more apt to pursue an actual relationship with someone like Allison Mack.

I think you said you were short but that can be a very good thing in some people's eyes. I hear a lot of men like shorter girls (and I know for sure that I do). It seems to me that this is often missed by shorter girls who think they should be taller. My understanding is that it is important for men to be tall to be as good looking but I don't think this applies to women

Maybe some men think a woman's height is important. This would be news to me.

I'm all about proportionality.

An incredibly tall girl can be intimidating to a guy, but other than that I don't know any guy who considers height to be incredibly important in determining attractiveness.

hot is material, temporary, and "socially accepted"

pretty is natural, real, and in a way, more subtle...

I think everyone is making this too complicated. If a woman is at least somewhat pretty and self-confident, all she has to do is put on certain clothes and go into sexy mode and voilà! Now she's hot.

I find hotness and prettiness determined by personality as well as looks. As alice pointed out, one can change their looks pretty easily to make themselves look "hot" simply by wearing more revealing clothes, etc. Personality goes a long way for making a girl appear hot though. Especially concerning her level of openness talking about certain subjects like sex or boyfriends (or girlfriends :-O). Bashful girls aren't hot even if they're wearing skimpy clothing; they're still bashful.

On a different note, I've met quite a few girls who, while mildly cute, decide to run around calling each other hot bitches (and I don't think it's sarcasm). It kind of disturbs me. People calling themselves "hot" when they're 40+ pounds overweight tells me that they're too lazy to diet or exercise but still like pretending in their heads that they're the same general level of attractiveness as someone not overweight. Silly self-deception.

and i agree that personality has nothing to do w/ it. i also agree w/ alice about being able to make yourself hot. guys i meet usually would say i'm pretty/cute but then if they see me at the beach or just in something a little more revealing they say i'm hot :P so yeah

I prefer pretty. Statistically speaking, a hot girl will be full of herself, materialistic, high maintenance, potentially stupid, etc. Pretty girls are down to Earth and appealing on a physical/intellectual level. That's been my most immediate impression in this country and especially at the gym I work at. So far anyway.

To me pretty is more naturally good-looking, when hot is more sex appeal, but that is not always the case.

I think context is the key. If I see a naturally pretty girl, I'll ask a friend if he thinks she is hot. But if I were to describe her I'd say she has a pretty face, nice body, etc.

Pretty = Face.

If you're described as pretty, you most likely have a good looking face. Not to say your body isn't good looking, it's just not very noticeable. Pretty inspires love more than lust. Eyes = Pretty

Hot = Body

If you're described as hot, chances are you've got curves in all the right places in your body. Not to say your face isn't good looking, it's may be anything from great to resistible. Breasts, Butt, Legs = Hot

I'm sure there are words where both categories would fall into one. Like, Sexy. Sexy = Face and Body work together as one.

I agree with Alice here. I used to think it's all face and body but now I think it's about the attitude and clothes she wears.
I have a friend and she is very pretty. I see her occasionally in school and every time I see her I think she's so pretty and no one can top her. She is a nice person by the way.
Then there was this time I went to an event where she was performing on stage and she wore this amazing dress and styled her hair in curls. She was so beautiful I was literally mesmerized.
Then there was another time we went out to a club and she was so freaking HOT. I was like "Woa, where has this side of her been hiding?"

Haha, nice one man! I'll be sure to remember that for life ;)

Well luckily for me my girlfriend is both.

I prefer pretty, myself. I'll take a baggy T-Shirt and Tennis Shoes over a sleek Evening Dress and High Heels any day of the week.

Either or both. Not trying to sound desperate or anything, but I like both alot.

It sucks when you are told you are hot when you find it insulting. Hot to me is an insult, just as sexy is. Pretty is..."meh"...not beautiful but appealing. Cute is an insult.
Beautiful is much better than pretty, if you are going to compliment somebody.
