I pretty much had my team set in stone the moment I was handed my type. It's a good thing I already had a couple of Dragons raised, but getting the rest up to par will be a bit time-consuming.

I'm still trying to figure out if I can make Shelgon a half-decent tank.

EDIT: I've been meaning to ask this, but do we go about challenging anybody we please, or is there some sort of structure as to who we'll be facing next?

Not unless someone uses a fighting type that knows foresight + a fighting attack :edgartpg:

I imagine a Shedinja with Double Team could be a real pain in the rear.

Oh, you can just go around and ask any gym leader player dude if they want to battle. Just be sure to log down your progress as I mentioned a few posts ago.

Scizor and a Drapion maybe? I'm leveling a Drapion myself because it's also Poison.

Forgot about that, just such a rarity against the AI to see that happen. I just remember hating Spiritomb in the last battle, I just dragoned it to death with Palkia.

Final Fantasy Phoneteen May 19, 2008 06:00 PM

Drapion's Poison/Dark, so that's a no-go. He loses his Bug type when he evolves. Scizor's okay, but... actually, I'd rather not talk about my strategy.

Josiah, I imagine that Double Team is banned. It usually is because of cheapness. Besides, it's actually really easy to hit Shedinja this generation.

DarkMageOzzie May 19, 2008 06:07 PM

Hmmm guess that explains why Fly didn't do squate to Drapion when I was fighting the elite four. That's silly that a giant Scorpion doesn't count as bug. That's almost like a fire breathing dragon only counting as fire and flying... oh wait.

Josiah May 19, 2008 06:10 PM

Dunno, I didn't see anything saying it was banned. I lost one of my first Singles battles at the Battle Tower because the first thing the trainer pulled out was a Shedinja. Not only did I know little about that pokemon at the time, I think I also didn't have any moves out of the three I had picked that could actually hit him. Double Team with something like Confuse Ray might protect you against the types that actually will get you...unless the move's something like Aerial Ace.

Either way though, I don't have Bug or Ghost and I don't think DT is going to be part of my strategy. It might be one less headache for me if that move were banned, anyway.

Identity Crisis May 19, 2008 06:43 PM

Oh, gotta post my friend code before I forget.

3737-6076-6955

There probably should be a list of friend codes on the first post for convenience. Anyway, if anybody would like to get an early start on their Gym Leader match, I'll be available for the rest of today. Just be sure to give me your friend code beforehand so I can add you.

Black Mage May 19, 2008 06:58 PM

Good point, I'll throw mine up here too.

Friend Code: 2406-1602-4421

I happened to get Flying, and while it's not my favorite type there's a lot more variety in there than I initially thought.

I'll need a couple of days to get ready, especially since it's my finals week, but I'll do what I can to have a relatively playable team in a few days.

radcliff13 May 19, 2008 07:05 PM

Fire types it is! I'm currently moving around so I won't have internet for about the rest of the week. But I'll let it be known when My fiery team is ready for action! And I'll get my friend code out also...:eagletear:

Sousuke May 19, 2008 08:16 PM

I'm not *quite* ready yet, but if anyone wants to do battle tomorrow, I should be good by then. I just have to add some [hopefully] finishing touches [read: moves] to my team. Which means hunting down some choice TMs. Beh.

Chaotic May 19, 2008 08:26 PM

I'm sure as hell not ready yet. ;_;

I need about two days. :tpg:

I believe that there is a very, very sneaky way around this, meaning that there's a specific Fighting-type Pokemon who should be able to hit Spiritomb with a Cross Chop, yet not require Foresight.

But I won't reveal it because I want to see if Sousuke can figure it out. Sousuke got the type I was hoping for, one I'm experienced with.

So, I'm the Psychic guy. It's one of the better types, offensively. They tend to have low defenses though, and that concerns me somewhat. I'm working on my last guy and then my bench will be set. I've got access to some good dual-types at least. Chaotic's team might pose a challenge but I think I can work around that. Just gotta find me a good Weavile counter because I know I'm gonna be facing that little sumnabitch.

(I guess I'm the lone participant who can shed a tear over Wobbuffet's ban.)

Yeah, Heracross is a given. I wouldn't underestimate Scizor or Forretress either. Yanmega's always been a top performer for me, and I'd also consider Shuckle. You might laugh but that little guy's a tank and a half. Scyther fills gaps that Scizor's lower speed can't handle, and even Armaldo can be a tough cookie. Plus, Shedinja is always a threat toward the end of a battle.

Out of curiosity, why exactly is Wobuffet banned?

Crash "Long-Winded Wrong Answer" Landon May 19, 2008 09:04 PM

Because it's moveset is entirely reactionary and mostly unfair.

This is basically the only Wobbuffet moveset you'll ever see, and you'll realize why it's pure cheese:

Counter
Mirror Coat
Encore
Destiny Bond

Its entire purpose seems to be to take something else down with it.

It's pretty slow, so all you have to do is give it a Focus Sash and even if it's OHKO'd before it acts, it'll still get a full-force Counter/Mirror Coat in before it goes down. Pretty cheesy way to play.

Actually none of those strategies are banned from this tournament. Just the Sleep Clause, Legendaries and Wobbuffet. My only reasoning behind it is that some types will be at a huge disadvantage if they were not allowed to do certain actions. Like Double Teaming.
Though I wouldn't encourage that kind of gameplay for everyone. Just focus on your strengths! Or completely throw your opponents off by doing something out of the ordinary.

Oh yeah, I remember. I trained _____ for just that reason using TM__ as the appropriate counter to Spiritombs. All I can say is, it works :tpg:.

^-^ May 19, 2008 09:33 PM

So many counters for Wobuffett...

heads up, do you think there will be another tournament? I wouldn't mind participating in one on the weekend of the 29th..

Kairyu May 19, 2008 09:44 PM

It depends how fast we are. If we're quick about it I could hold another one by the second week of June. From what I can tell if no one is held up with anything for two weeks straight, we could be done within a week and a half from now.

Crash "Long-Winded Wrong Answer" Landon May 19, 2008 09:48 PM

I will be in Maine for the GFF Meet all of next week, so I don't specifically know when I'll be available. I won't have any direct obligations tying me down, such as work or otherwise but I might be participating in real-life exploits some of the time too.

I'll be packing my laptop and the wi-fi USB adaptor, at any rate. I'll try to get some matches in.

Kairyu May 19, 2008 09:53 PM

Ah shit, that's right. I forgot about your meet. Hopefully it won't be a problem if you have a wifi usb adapter. Internet is everywhere these days.

Josiah May 20, 2008 12:14 AM

I think it's still going to take me a bit of time before I get the moves I want and such.

I'm thinking the biggest hurdles are the fairly narrow move pools I have to work with. You do have a point though, seeing as how many of the dual-types that include Normal (in fact, all but one, Normal/Water, of which Bibarel's the only member) cancel out the Fighting weakness. Bibarel's become more tempting for getting around some types that resist normal, too.

And...the option of a stab Return? Hmmmm..

Addition: Are we supposed to post our team (and benchers, if we have any) once we have it put together? I do remember it being said somewhere that movesets weren't required to be put up, or is that going to wait until we have the actual tournament?

Kairyu May 21, 2008 02:19 PM

Alright, time to ask. How's everyone doing? ANYONE ready yet? I'm close but I'm short on a couple key moves which I should have later today.

Team and move pool info are not required. If you're somehow unsure about your selection I won't stop you from asking around. Having a certain element of surprise is partially why this tournament is awesome =D

Additional Spam:
Also, I need FCs from the following players:
DarkMageOzzie
Crash Landon
radcliff13
Josiah

The rest I found at GFwiki. I assume they still work. If not, post back here and say so!

Crash "Long-Winded Wrong Answer" Landon May 21, 2008 02:42 PM

My friend code is: 0645 2635 1419.

My team is set and ready to rumble. I do have a wi-fi USB adapter, and will take it with me on my trip.

Josiah May 21, 2008 02:45 PM

I'm still trying to get together all the pokemon I want with the right moves. I've got six to raise now to get the appropriate moves, but I'll still need more time to get some alternates ready. Once I feel the first six are ready I'll post my FC, I'm thinking it'll be a day or so.
