so lets just say the date for the bets is still confirmed and ready to go. Will it be available for to play for tonight.
Also has anyone traveled through konami site, it was going so slow so I couldn't go through much but is it possible to add friends game ID's through there or is it only possible when within the beta?

Online only. As far as it going to start tonight, who knows. I've read tonight, tomorrow, never. It's anyone's guess at this point.

Simo Apr 24, 2008 07:25 PM

Beta doesn't kick off until tomorrow night at 11pm GMT for those in the UK. For folks in the US it'll begin 12am PST and 3am EST.

Also there's another software update from 1.01 to 1.02....but don't worry the file is small and only takes 5-10 minutes tops. According to the release its a patch for "how the client connects to the server" so hopefully no fuck ups will occur this weekend.

kainlightwind Apr 24, 2008 07:50 PM

Looks like Konami is getting their shit together. That's good!

Gechmir Apr 24, 2008 07:57 PM

Won't be online until Saturday? Christ, I wonder if I should even *try* it. I'll only be able to use it for a day or so... How long is MGO up for? Only a month?

Shenlon Apr 25, 2008 01:09 PM

its online (in the US at least)
I played for like 2 minutes without going into the training so don't jump straight into playing until you go into training and familiarize yourself with the controls because it doesn't feel anything like the other mgs games
I'm going to play again later when I have more liberating time and also to record some gameplay, so I guess I'll see you guys online

Congle line of abuse. Or is that conga-line. Or congaline. Apr 25, 2008 01:44 PM

The game is pretty great aside from the connection problems I've been having. That could just be me though~

Shenlon Apr 25, 2008 01:47 PM

actually when i tried to connect to the snake lobby there was a network error. No problem with the otacon one tho

EDIT: So a just played a good while of MGO and I have to ask, is anyone else experiencing a bunch of lags on these servers. And I mean a lot. At first it plays ok and then the controls take 2 seconds to respond to my actions so it's almost impossible for me to shoot anything.
The few matches that did play fine tho were kinda fun but I find the scheme of the controls to be very broken. You can press L1 to go over the shoulder but then you have to press triangle in order to go into first person and unless your use to the controls your timing isn't going to be so great when you decide to get a precise shot to the head. I had to set my fps movement down to 3 since the anolog felt way to sensitive when moving and I'd overshoot my target.
And still, I noticed a lot of people just run randomly into each other and shoot like crazy and basically have a shoot-off while standing still until someone dies. Which is why I think the auto-aim shouldn't have been implemented into the game at all since I think a lot of people will have it on at all times and shoot each other in the body for like 10 seconds unless of course your being gang "banged"
Well so far the Lag is my biggest problem, could be my connection but I have no problems with COD4 so I'm guessing konami is having problems with their servers still.

kainlightwind Apr 25, 2008 04:41 PM

I haven't seen too much of any lag. I've seen more people lag out than play though. This is a beta afterall.

Greeder Apr 25, 2008 08:11 PM

Had a good stab at it now, and I must say that I'm surprised, happily so :)
Thought this Beta would be a nightmare of cursing and moaning over lag issues and stuff that usually comes with Beta-stage Games, but it was actually really really enjoyable.
Experienced little to none Lag and can't say I noticed much from my teammates/oponents either.
Wasn't hoping for much when Konami started off with postponing the launch of the server.
So this is certainly gonna enlighten the 2 weeks to come :)

Btw, are the Servers seperated from eachother? as in, can I meet people from the USA over here in Europe, and vice versa.

Cetra Apr 26, 2008 12:19 AM

Stability is fine, but sorry MGS fans this game is outright horrible and it's mostly because of some of the worst controls I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with. I sure hope they take some serious feedback from players on this because the entire control system needs to be scrapped and reworked.

Greeder Apr 26, 2008 02:01 AM

I thought the controls were pretty good o.O
Although I'm not very experienced with FPS on Consoles I picked it up pretty quick.

Cetra Apr 26, 2008 03:08 AM

Having to hold a trigger to aim sucks when dealing with multiplayer. They just need to copy the Gears of War control scheme when in 3rd person view. I know bringing the gun to ready is a MGS thing, but it just isn't working out for online play.

I'm just running around constantly holding L1. It's pointless. And even worse this L1 -> Control Stick -> R1 hurts my hand on the Dual Shock.

That's just the start of the issues I noticed though. I'm not going to complain about the rest though because franking I'm sure nobody cares that much. I just really hope they are planning on taking some suggestions from the beta players because the potential in this is awesome, but it's a total diamond in the rough right now.

Hantei Apr 26, 2008 05:10 AM

Wow, after extensive play tonight (I think about 8 hours straight), I gotta say I'm addicted. The Drebin Points mode is probably my favorite because of the variety of weapons + attachments available is pretty satisfying (M4/AK + Grenade Launcher, thumbs up from me). Also popping heads is so much easier than in MGO1, thanks inpart of the new aiming system (heh, earned an Eagle rank because of this).

The only thing I don't like about the controls is the lack of an ability to run and gun, that element is definitely a necessity when it comes to online play. Other than that, I'll be continuously playing the beta till its closing.

espressivo Apr 26, 2008 10:29 AM

i was surprised that there wasn't any lag, but once in a while a red message saying connection not stable popped up, but i never got disconnected or anything. the controls are just weird, it doesn't work too well for online play and auto aim is just crap. i have a hard time playing DM with these controls, especially on the small map, i find that people just turn auto aim on and once they see you they L1 and just shoot until you die.

what's cool is when you receive a message while in a game, the codec rings and you get an mail icon at the top of the screen.

Simo Apr 26, 2008 11:29 AM

Well I played a few hours yesterday, including some rounds with Hantei, and then some more just now and I'm pretty addicted too. It did take me awhile to get into it given my main online fix for the last 7-8 months has been COD4 so it took some getting used to while everyone else kept kicking my ass.:gonk:

Controls were an issue at the start too given that its not even standard MGS stuff since they've redone the controls for the single player campaign for MGS4 and then carried everything over to MGO so I struggled for abit. My one and main complaint though is the aiming and hit detection. It seems that even with Auto Aim off trying to hit somebody inside the reticle is bloody hard given most your shots whizz by the guy and the recoil in FPS mode is ridiculous but then again thats probably because I'm too used to COD. Overall though I try and use manual aim when they're off a ways and then switch to Auto Aim for close quarters which has been a winning combination so far.

I guess for any GFFers wanting to hook up we got to get a shit together all over again given you can't find players with either their PSN IDs or Konami Gamer IDs but only with specific names that you gave your character. So mine is DGSimo the same as my PSN to make things easier. If any GFFers want to link up for a game in the next 5 hours then post ahead, that way we can just create a GamingForce specific room and password just for GFFers.

Shenlon Apr 26, 2008 11:39 AM

sure i'd be good to play later. I didn't have a good experience before since my wireless connection might have given me some lag but it should be running perfectly now.

Simo Apr 26, 2008 11:41 AM

Alright then if all goes well I'll have a GFF lobby in the next 2 hours at 3pm EST then. Folks can drop me a line in MGO for the server info and password and I'll post it here too just for good measure.

eprox1 Apr 26, 2008 04:42 PM

Dang. I was hoping to hear some more positive impressions of the game, but it sounds like controls are holding everybody back from enjoying it.

I'll be on at about 2 in the morning tonight when I get back from the bars tonight to finally try the game out, otherwise maybe I'll see some of you guys online tomorrow.

SouthJag Apr 26, 2008 04:52 PM

I would highly recommend that anyone go through the Training mode before playing the game. I jumped right in and was pretty bad at it, but after I went through training, I got a bit more familiar with the controls. I didn't know you could switch between omniscient third person, over-the-shoulder third, and first person. The OTS cam works a lot better for me, personally.

Anyway, training first, game second.

I couldn't agree with you more. I quit after two minutes and later that day I went into training. I didn't actually do the training missions I just played around the whole field and I found out the majority of the controls. Even the ground maneuvers which were advertised but those controls are more advanced.
After training I found myself kicking ass....a little too much that it was a bit too easy. I think a lot of other people didn't train either, and they just rush while I try to sneak and hide behind some cover to abush them. Unless its a good lobby, auto matchmaking matches you with some easier "prey".

I also don't see enough people using the knife, especially since you can't re-equip it with the tap of R2 (what the hell is up with that) but the knife is a very good weapon to catch some easy shots.
And a word of advise for those who are just starting to learn the controls. Don't tap the R1 button when you want to grab. Hold it, so you can really knock them into the ground or disorient them and quickly lock on or aim at them for a quick kill.

Other than that, after you get used to the controls you can really enjoy the game but that doesn't mean that the controls are perfect. First person mode kinda sucks. CQC maneuvers are a little off since you can do it right in front a person and completely misses and switching through the weapon kinda suck since you can't go right back to your previously chosen weapon all the time.

Yes you can. Just go to Gameplay Options and you can view the window that allows the R2 quick change be it for a 3 slot cycle or equip/unequip weapon and then select what weapons you can cycle through, be it primary, secondary, support or knife. Likewise you can customise it if you just want to cycle between your rifle or pistol.

I don't really use the knife though but it is overpowered given it can knock you completely out with 1 stun and then its 1 hit kill.

CQC is mad fun. Obviously you've got similiar moves from MGS3 but now you've got a little more to play with in MGS4/MGO. Obviously though you just can't go running out on the field trying to CQC anybody but when things get close or you're throwing a last minute bid to survive then CQC is essential. There's nothing more gratifying than grabbing somebody and dragging them off out of sight, dropping them down to roll and choke the bitch out while his teammate goes running by without a clue....and then coming back later to pop on to the skull to finish them off after the nap. :D

This shit is too addicting though. I try and leave but end up coming back for more and went from level 1 to level 3 in a matter of a couple of hours. Shit, I even managed to get a clan going for Team GFF which Hantei has managed to hook up with so again any fellow GFFers wanting to play just post away your MGO name and we'll roll. I already updated the OP with mine and Hantei's names so hopefully we can this locked down and I won't have to re-edit the names again...

Firefly Apr 27, 2008 12:04 AM

All in all, this sounds most interesting. I cannot help but wonder if certain 'classic' Metal Gear threads are waiting among the unlockables (examples: MGS' Genome Soldiers; MGS2's Hi-tech Soldiers and Tengu Commandos)...

A necessity for online play? I would not be so quick to make that pronouncement... after all, MGO is a different sort of game than, say, Team Fortress 2.

when you set up your account, you had to make two IDs, one of the IDs wanted you to use just numbers... make sure your inputing the numbers password, and not your other KonamiID password.

Because my GameID is metalgearstrife, I had to make in-game name metalgearcliff...

someone should set up a GFF clan..
