For those who haven't heard, WiiWare is finally getting something definitively awesome. Yes, Mega Man 9 is here and with 100% less girly voice. Not only is it nice and nostalgic in appearance, but it's being done by a team made up of the devs behind Mega Man X1-3, Mega Man Zero, and Mega Man ZX. In other words, the good post-NES MM platformers.

All 10 Nintendo Power scans can be found here. Plug Man's power will likely make this the Wii's first AO rated game.

And in addition to the graphics, the music will be styled in an 8-bit fashion, as well as 8-bit styled cinema cutscenes. "I am sure when people see the opening scenes- new content with 8-bit graphics- they're going to be very excited."
Plug Man and Splash Woman in opening cutscene confirmed?

Miles Jun 26, 2008 09:06 PM

Holy shit. I literally blew a load all over my computer screen the second I clicked on show spoiler. This has got to be the most awesome thing to hit WiiWare ever.

Let's hope other companies catch on...

Wall Feces Jun 26, 2008 09:07 PM

This is the greatest news I've heard in years, holy SHIT. A new MM game with NES graphics? Could they possibly cater to my hopes and dreams any more? Fucking AWESOME!! This game cannot suck at all.

Sousuke Jun 26, 2008 09:13 PM

When I saw this on The Feed [on AOTS] I was under the impression that it was going to look like the later [X, ZX] games, with an 8-bit option. I guess that's not the case then? 8-bit only? [Linked page won't load for me.]

Even so, this is still awesome.

The Plane Is A Tiger Jun 26, 2008 09:19 PM

I think the page with the scans is being bombarded by traffic from the IGN article right now. It went down for about 15 minutes when I first tried to make this post, which is why I linked IGN too.

Great, the internet just designed Mega Man 9.

SuperSonic Jun 27, 2008 12:14 AM

A blast from the past, Mega Man returns to his roots. All these years in the back of my mind, I kept thinking that they would eventually make a Mega Man 9. Honestly, I can't believe this is actually happening. The screens look a little fishy and I'm hoping this doesn't turn out like Duke Nukem Forever.

Mega Man 9...I just want to keep saying it over and over again. XD I'm pretty excited about this!

Sakabadger Jun 27, 2008 01:04 AM

Kind of mixed feelings on this one. Megaman is one of my favorite franchises and the NES games are certainly very nostalgic to me, but I don't really think I'm all that excited over Megaman 9 just because it's 8-bit. I liked the way Megaman 7/8 looked, so I dunno why they couldn't have just kept that art direction. Yeah, a lot of people really loved the NES games like Megaman 2, but I'm sure the gameplay/innovative features had as much to do with it as the oldschool graphics, if not more.

What I'm most bothered about is the fact that they even named this thing Megaman 9 and that it won't have anything to do with bridging the gap between the classic series and X. "X" never really stood for "10" in the series so I guess that can be their reasoning, but come on. The story needs to be told some day, and not just through little blurbs in games or via manuals.

Miles Jun 27, 2008 01:17 AM

I liked the way Megaman 8 looked too. Why you don't understand? Heh... I hope they purposely include some Engrish in Mega Man 9 if there's any text at all.

Kostaki Jun 27, 2008 03:08 AM

This game will be an instant purchase by practically anyone that owns a Wii, no matter which Mega Man games you liked or disliked. The individual series out today like the X series or Battle Network/Star Force series were moving in a direction that many disliked. Mega Man 8 looked great, but it was really moving away from the classic gameplay we all knew and loved. This is the way to revive interest in the series, by taking a step back and showing people where this blue bomber originally came from.

I can see this getting more purchases overall than MGS4 did no matter what MM9 retails for on WiiWare. I don't mind paying $12 or $15 for it, and the newer generation of gamers don't realize that we paid as much for NES games back then as they do for PS3 and 360 games today. It's Retro vs. Realistic, and everyone wins.

From Rockman Perfect Memories, regarding the information on the scans...

Spoiler:

The story is as standard as any of the previous Rockman games, but with a twist. Robots are on a rampage, and Wily is coming back, but this time around, he states that the robot attacks are caused by Dr. Right, Rockman's own creator. Now Rockman has to prove his creator's innocence by defeating the new robot masters and finding the real truth behind the cause.

Inafune himself states the following about the relation to past Rockman games and the creation of this one. He says that the entertaining parts of a Rockman game "doesn't fit into the grandiose and expansive world that the consumer gaming industry has become, and so you have to make games that match the current expectations."

If the game would've come out as a retail version, Inafune claims that it would be criticized as being simplistic, outdated or too expensive, and with today's standards in making a game, bringing an 8bit game to retail wouldn't be a wise decision on a home console. This is why it's been decided that it would surface as a downloadable content, in the means of WiiWare, for the reason of reliving an instant classic much in the same way as Virtual Console games does.

The game will be created by Inti Creates, who gave us Rockman ZERO and ZX series, as well as Rockman EXE Battle Chip GP on the GBA. Their experience with the 8bit formula has been proven in the mini-game Rockman Antique that's unlockable in Rockman ZX Advent. The Blue Bomber will be controlled by placing the Wii Remote sideways in traditional Famicom/NES style, and hopefully, it does support more controllers. Inafune also revealed that while there aren't any new mechanical devices for Rockman to use to progress in the game, his trusted canine companion Rush will return, thus making sure that memorable classic characters are returning in the same fashion.

The reason they bring this game as a 8bit style game, is because fans being the most acquainted to that style since the birth of Rockman more than 20 years ago. Since fans has been playing the first games in the series an unlimited amount of time, and portraying his classic style in both fan productions on the internet and T-shirt decorations, it felt just right to bring the revival of our classic Blue Bomber back in a style that's most familiar to everyone. Being able to test the limits of 8bit graphics on a current generation home console seemed like a fun idea to pick up on.

The music will be styled in 8bit fashion too, not to mention cutscenes in the same way they were experienced in the past Rockman games. Pure 8bit progressive goodness. Inafune is also mentioning that, with Rockman 2 being the most favorite title of all time, he hopes that Rockman 9 will surpass that, and hopefully be able to keep bringing Rockman back to his roots with more sequels in this fashion.

His final statement is this: "The moment you've been waiting for is here! We're not just giving you Rockman 9, we're giving you a new Famicom/NES game. This is a game that brings back the fun of the old games, and I hope you all enjoy it!"

What a treat, Inafune. What a great move, Capcom. What a gift to long-time NES nostalgia heads.

So why is it that Megaman wasn't in Brawl again? Honestly? Ah well.

Oh don't even start that. Maybe he'll be in the next one, whenever that comes out. As far as Mega Man 9 surpassing Mega Man 2 or 3, they're really going to have to pull out all the stops on that one. I don't think it can be done, but I hope Capcom can prove me wrong because this could be more than just one game we're getting for this revival of the original.

nuttyturnip Jun 27, 2008 09:39 AM

Acer's just grumpy because the game is going to take up so much hard drive space, he'll have to buy another Wii just to play Mega Man 9.

chato Jun 28, 2008 10:09 AM

Well it is confirmed that the game is multiplatform so 9's heading to PSN and Live Arcade. Make's no difference. I just want to play the game.

I actually have two Wiis in my house. But now that I have the Homebrew Channel I don't have to worry about space anymore. Plenty of room for this. :)

According to the catalog, Magnetica Twist is available this week for 1,000 points and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King is also available for varied points...wait, didn't they release that like a month ago?

New downloadable content is out today for it. Don't know what it is, since I don't own the game.

According to the E3 schedule, Capcom plans to show Megaman 9 for 360 and PS3. Guess Microsoft will be getting my money after all, because 1) I won't have to clog my Wii up, and 2) I'm a sucker for achievement points (I'll bet one is "Beat all 8 robot masters with megabuster only").

FatsDomino Jun 30, 2008 02:42 PM

It's probably just new expansion shit that they should release for free but well you knoooow gotta keep on fishing with this thing.

Am I the only one who has only downloaded Lost Winds and nothing else? So far it's been glorified flash games, shovelware, trivia, My Life as a Won'tyougiveusapennygovna, puzzle games, and more shovelware. Where are the original GAAAAAAMES, Nintendo?!

That was a mistake.

Retro-themed Megaman 9 to hit WiiWare

The Plane Is A Tiger Jul 4, 2008 03:47 PM

So much for the achievement points, but I probably would've bought it for WiiWare anyway. Using the sideways wiimote will add to that lovely classic feel.
