I always use my left thumb to press the space bar, I generally don't use my right thumb when typing even though I am right handed. I am self taught, so I can't touch type or type particularly fast but I get there in the end.

I use my right thumb to press the spacebar. It's just natural. I was never trained to type...I decided Typing class in school was a waste of time and opted for Algebra II Trig (which I was awful at). I'm pretty fast, but I wouldn't trust myself to just type anything without looking at the board occasionally. :eagletear:

I'm new, but I'm not... new.. whats up?

Alright so I'm quote un quote new to this forum, but I found it today via a friend who referred me here. I figured I would check it out and see if I could find any useful information.

My friend referred me to this forum by some sort of weird pc to phone chat service www.callitfake.com. Not sure if someone here told him to, if it was spam or what. Either way, I said I would check it out so here I am.

I'm 27, Phoenix Arizona native. I work for MTX and ship speakers for a living, so if you ever have any car audio questions -- i'm likely to be your guy.

I only use the right thumb although I read that you are supposed to use both...

No, what I'm telling you is I don't bother using my other fingers. Although it would suck if those were the only ones I had.

I am right handed in baseball, for some reason.

I am left handed in using a rifle.
I am weird.

I got "100 WPM" fast at typing in Jr. High because I basically taught myself.

You're not alone. I write with my right hand, kick and play hockey left handed, and I also play guitar hero lefthanded style.

I actually had to try this out and I find that depending on where my fingers are on the keyboard, I tend to use both of my thumbs.

I know I was taught to use my thumbs. Generic formal teaching will do that. I was taught in middle and high school that I had to type a certain way. As it is, I don't type that way. I have no idea why, though.

I also use my index fingers, usually my right index, but I occasionally toggle between the two. I was never trained to type and I am also very bad at typing. I have no idea how fast I can type but I do manage to get by just fine. I assume I'm nowhere near 100WPM, probably not even 50.

NovaX Feb 14, 2007 08:27 PM

Yeah, I use my right index fingers as well.

Acacia Feb 14, 2007 09:09 PM

I thought that you hit the spacebar with your dominant hand, but, after some replies, I guess not.

=/ That's the case for me though; I'm basically left-handed, and hit the spacebar with my left thumb. My left thumb is usually touching the spacebar, while my right thumb is hovering over it.

I also don't use my pinkies for typing, other than pressing the shift key...

Haha, how strange!

Such a Lust for Revenge! Feb 14, 2007 09:32 PM

GOT YOU. I hurt my thumb nail when miscalutating after aiming for the spacebar and realized that the thumb that hurt was on the right.

Rydia Feb 14, 2007 10:23 PM

I use the right thumb when pressing the space bar. I just never learned how to use the left, and I think I simply began using the right out of habit when I first began typing properly. Using the left thumb also works, but I tend to type slower.

acid Feb 14, 2007 10:27 PM

After typing this post I realize that I don't use a thumb at all, I use the index finger of my right hand. Hitting the spacebar with my thumb just seems awkward and I wind up having random spaces all over the place.

Dee Feb 14, 2007 11:11 PM

I think I use my right thumb, strangely. Right now when I'm typing this I am confirming this to myself. My left thumb hangs. I never took a typing class, but I used this Mavis Beacon teaches typing crap in middle school that didn't really help except make you cheat. So I guess I'm self taught. I think I type at a reasonable pace.

nazpyro Feb 15, 2007 12:40 AM

It's usually my right thumb. I don't have a consistent typing form, so it's whatever's closer. Right thumb mostly though.

Vemp Feb 15, 2007 12:05 PM

When I type, the spacebar presses down automatically by itself! As if it knows what I'm typing and when I'm supposed to press the spacebar! Now that my thumbs are free, I thumb-wrestle while typing.

I like how this fucking thread with this silly title gets more posts than my average threadd.

K_ Takahashi Feb 15, 2007 02:48 PM

I just use whichever one is convient, though most of the time it is the right one.

Celes Chere Feb 16, 2007 10:08 PM

I usually use my left, I believe. Sometimes I use my index from the same hand though.

I was also self taught, so I type differently than I 'should'. I don't use the correct fingers most of the time, but I'm still pretty efficient. :)

gamingdude Feb 20, 2007 04:49 PM

the left thumb

FLEX Feb 21, 2007 11:16 PM

It's a 75/25 split between the right and left thumbs.

mindOverMatter Feb 22, 2007 08:26 AM

I use my right thumb, and I type about 44 WPM (self taught)
...I wonder if I tried to use my other thumb would I type faster...

Water_Rain Feb 22, 2007 06:49 PM

I mainly use my right thumb, though the left sometimes slips through. Self taught, and my highest WPM last time I checked was 125, with roughly 95% accuracy.

horseman85 Feb 22, 2007 08:58 PM

use both of my thumbs . . . whichever one is more convenient usually
