Anything that protects the screen should work fine. I've used the same one for two DSes already, and it works just fine.

As for that, that one is good, mostly sticks on the screen, but doesn't have a shitload of adhesive that would leave residue on the screen. Even if it does it, just use some olive oil, that residue isn't water soluble anyway. Stuff would come right off using olive oil.

As for the warranty, if you worry about it breaking within the next year or your shoulder buttons failing like mine have every year, then go for it. $14 to save you from spending another $130 is a total win.

So what's new? Haven't checked out the scene somewhere since Contra 4, did anything new and worthy come out outside Japan?

Zeta26 Dec 25, 2007 01:13 AM

Um, not much. Well, nothing that would warrent a purchase anyway IMO.

I'd like to ask you DS Lite owners for a piece of advice:
I plan to buy a Nintendo DS Lite this following month, there's just one thing I haven't decided on, the color of the DS.

For a long time I thought about buying a black DS but I heard that doesn't matter how cautious you are it usually get's "finger impressions" (forgive my english).

So I'm leaning towards a Ceramic White, but still considering other colors.
What I'd like to ask you DS owners is:

. Do you know if other colors besides black get these "finger impressions" ?

. Does some particular color gets more dirty than other ? (Take the controller for the xbox 360 for exemple, a lot of people complain it gets dirty easy)

. Do you think a particular color that looked nice at the time bored you too soon ? (Something that hardly happens with colors like white or black, but maybe could happen with pink or blue)

I think that's all.

I like black. So I got a black DS. And to prevent it from getting fingerprints, I got a crsytal case for my DS. Problem solved.

FatsDomino Jan 12, 2008 11:30 PM

One thing to consider, Yuna, is that the white can show dirt more easily than black. However, I've had my white DS lite since launch and it seems fine. It has a few dirt smudges here and there but in the end as long as it can play games and isn't broken I don't mind. I honestly say go with whatever color you like and if it gets dirty then so be it. Just take a clothe and apply a little elbow grease if it matters to you. =)

That or you could get some sort of clear protective cover/case like Vemp here.

Sakabadger Jan 12, 2008 11:32 PM

If they were available in the US, I would have gotten a navy blue DS. But alas, they weren't so I settled for white. Fingerprints and the like don't show up as well on the white as they do on the black, but crap that gets under the hard plastic shell will show up really well. The little rubber nubs on the base of the DS will also get dirty quickly, and there's nothing you can do about it.

The best solution is, no matter what color you choose, to get a protective sleeve (like silicon or something) or case (hard plastic) to put your DS in. Helps protect your DS and keeps it looking good as well.

And of course, some screen protectors.

Yuna Jan 13, 2008 12:11 AM

Thanks for your suggestions people. Actually I do these things with my PSP so I would probably do the same with the DS. I'll just decide between a white or a black one. I even considered the pink one, but maybe I'll get bored of the color soon.

Just so I won't need to post again to ask another question, anybody knows a place to meet people to play DS online ? Well, here would be a good start but considering there are people from lots of different countrys it could be hard to find an hour that is good for everybody.
I was thinking something more like an IRC channel. Something that when you are there online, is when you're ready to play.

Thanks again for the suggestion on colors !

FatsDomino Jan 13, 2008 12:23 AM

Well on irc.xelium.net you can join #nwifi and some people might be on it. I haven't been there in a while but that's where most gff folks who wanted to play online ds games hung out. A good deal are also #xblive crew so you could visit there as well. And of course someone on #gff might want to play so you can give that a try. We all tend to keep our DS friend codes in the thread in the multiplayer subforum so go take a look at that.

Dhsu Jan 13, 2008 12:34 AM

I got a gold DS, and it's been really cool except for one thing I didn't anticipate...the paint is coming off the corners. D:

#nwifi or the multiplayer arena work best for this. Make a pickup game thread or something.

FatsDomino Jan 13, 2008 02:08 AM

Woah, just a suggestion since I haven't bee in #nwifi in months and I don't know if it's dead or not. I do know that #xblive is always kicking and has folks who do play DS games online so the possibility is there. Just sayin'.

Yeah, I hate that. I take my DS out in public and people are all like "SWAMP MONSTER!" and I go back to the swamp in tears. :(

Yuna Jan 13, 2008 08:11 AM

Thanks for the links AcerBandit !
Well, I did expect teh DS to be fragile but not that much. I have my PSP for about 7 months now and I have never droped it, but just in case it happens it leave it always in the hardcase.

I want my DS so badly, especially now FFIV has been released, but since a friend of mine will be bringing it to me from the States (in my country it costs almost 3 times the price) it will take a month. But it is worth the wait !

Dark Nation Jan 13, 2008 09:09 AM

While the Xbox 360 controllers do seem to attract dirt easily, the DS's glossy finish seems to stave off smudges to a greater degree. I have a white DS and its been working fine. Any smudges or signs of dirt that appear are easily cleaned off on either one :)

Frozen Memories Jan 13, 2008 03:48 PM

I have the White DS. It's pretty much clean, except the L and R buttons are almost grey from dirt. It kinda sucks, but, I guess it's not a big deal. You wouldn't have that problem with the Black one, but, you would still get fingerprints on it. I think it'd be easier to clean though.

RacinReaver Jan 13, 2008 05:39 PM

I've got a crimson and black DS and have to say it's the best out there. The crimson top stays nice and shiny, no dirt yet, and the bottom is a matte black finish which makes me hands sweat a lot less when playing games. While I was home during Christmas I played my mom's pink DS a bit and couldn't stand the feeling of the glossy finish on my fingers.

Kanji Jan 13, 2008 05:49 PM

I have a black DS Lite myself, and I practically worship the thing. On top of all the excellent games, there's something about that shiny finish that keeps me in the mood to preserve its new look. Of course, since I use it more often than any of my other consoles these days, it's apparent that it has aged since day one, but I try to keep it as nicely as I can.

Since I never made an investment towards a crystal case or silicon sleeve, I just take extra precautions before handling it - you know, washing hands before use if they're greasy/dirty, keeping it far away from food and drinks, being completely anal about cautiousness if a friend wants to play on it, etc. I actually rarely use it as a portable console (i.e. take it out in public areas) because I'm worried that something will happen to it.

While it's true that fingerprints show up well on the black model, this is an issue easily solved by a microfiber cloth. I've found that they get the fingerprints off really well, and you can always dampen the cloth a little bit in case some smudges won't come off. Microfiber's great for cleaning the screens as well (though you'll probably want a separate cloth for this purpose).

As far as current gaming goes, I'm thoroughly enjoying the Phoenix Wright games. A little bit late to the party, but hopefully I'll get around to finishing Trials and Tribulations before Apollo Justice hits America!

I was wondering, do the Nintendogs Pink and Phantom Hourglass Gold Nintendo DS Lites have the matte finish like yours?

RacinReaver Jan 13, 2008 06:21 PM

I don't think they do, but I've never actually seen any of them in person. Dhsu said he has a gold one (which I'm guessing is the Zelda one), so he might know better.

bahamuty Jun 10, 2008 07:49 AM

The Zelda gold DS has a gloss finish on the outside. It's such a nice color, finger prints don't show easy. I noticed they are selling the metallic rose DS now without Nintendogs. Maybe gold will become a standard color too.

Is there a cable sold commercially that will display the DS on a TV screen? This picture made me wonder about that...

Are there any future 64 DS ports on the horizon?

Am I right that they only ported 3 games? Super Mario, Diddy, and Rayman, with the former being the good one?

FatsDomino Mar 2, 2009 03:38 PM

Yeah, I was a bit surprised there aren't as many N64 ports for this thing as well. I guess the closest thing would be maybe the port of Resident Evil since it was an N64/PSX era game.

I'd pay like, actual real-life money for a DS port of Harvest Moon 64. That'd be radical. There definitely should've been a few more Nintendo 64 ports.
