If you like Children of Bodom, you might like Kalmah. Kind of similar but Kalmah has many more melodies going on and I personally enjoy them more.

Shadows Fall is another great band that has evolved their style from melodic death metal to thrashcore to more of a hard rock/thrashcore sound. Also check out All That Remains, sort of similar to Shadows Fall.

One band to look further into would be Unexpect. I really don't know how to describe them other than being extremely wild and incorporating many different styles. I've only heard two songs from them but I really enjoyed what I heard.

Raunchy. Raunchy, oh god, Raunchy.

Specifically the album Death Pop Romance.

People don't hate In Flames because they changed their style. =/ Amorphis changed their style, and they still kick ass. In Flames just plain got shitty.

Yet they changed their style as well. You can obviously hear the difference between say Reroute to Remain and Jester Race or even Whoracle. They've went from focusing on melodies to more of a rhythm/groove feel. It was sort of like that with Clayman, still had plenty of melody however. Plus Anders on the later In Flames albums isn't a good singer.

Yeah, but my point was that some bands change their style and remain awesome, just different. In Flames changed their style, and, while I agree it's certainly different, it's different in a bad way.

What bands do you think changed styles and remained awesome?

I guess Death would be one. They were originally a more 80s style death metal band and then progressed into a progressive death metal band and I think they got much better when they turned to that style.

Yes, Death definitely. Amorphis, as I mentioned previously. A lot of people hate on newer Dark Tranquillity, but I still dig it. Finntroll, Jag Panzer, Sentenced stayed cool the first time their sound changed around Amok, but when they changed again for Crimson/all that stuff afterwards they lost me.

When did Metric break up? They're still posting new show dates on their myspace...

There's a pattern in In Flames albums. First four albums were pretty great, but I don't see the hubbub about Jester Race. rErOuTe To AnGsT = Fucking horrible. Soundtrack = Better, but still pretty bad. Come Clarity was a pretty great comeback if you ask me - Not everyone likes it, but I thought it was pretty killer.

For stuff similar to Killswitch Engage, check out Trivium and Bleed the Sky, for Unearth check out If Hope Dies and Parkway Drive. Look around in metalcore in general, but to be honest, those are the only bands I've heard that compare well with the ones you listed. Most of the Metalcore I've heard uses dirty production to (it seems to me) cover up for a lack of any talent. Bleeding Through, for example. They have a couple of songs I like, but without a whole lot of melody going on, I get tired of them kinda quick.

For In Flames or thrash sound, check out At the Gates, The Haunted (I prefer "The Haunted Made Me Do It"), The Fifth Sun (still unsigned right now-- I can send you some album tracks), Soilwork & side project Disarmonia Mundi, and if you end up liking that, move on to Scar Symmetry. It seems like there's been an increase in metal bands with melodic/death vocalists, and I suspect a lot of it can be traced back to Soilwork.

And if you like to go bird hunting, you'll love They Will Return. Just think about duck hunting or something when you listen to the title track.

*sigh* It's also doom metal.
For good examples of doom metal, check out Candlemass, Solitude Aeternus, Electric Wizard, Saint Vitus, Count Raven, hell just go there.

Therion! Their death metal era was awesome. Their "transitional" era was awesome. Their current symphonic era is awesome as well.

Amorphis was another good example. They're kind of starting to bore me, Eclipse didn't really grab me... but they're still pretty good.

Bathory's another good one. Excellent pioneering black metal, turned to excellent pioneering viking/pagan metal.

Skyclad became progressively folkier and completely shed the thrash metal elements, and yet still rule.

Cruachan is also still great despite having completely lost their black metal sound. Some will disagree, though... but I enjoy their celtic albums.

Then you have bands like In Flames, Sepultura, Children of Bodom, Slayer (and others too obvious to mention) that either changed style or became progressively more fecal, like parodies of their former selves.

Yeah, Eclipse didn't really do a lot for me, either. My favourite song was only included on the album as a bonus track.

The only reason Sabbath isn't really classified by a lot of people as doom metal, Majin, is because back when they started metal didn't really have a bunch of subgenres like it does today, so everything got lumped into "heavy metal". They still have a sound more deserving of being classified as doom metal than anything else.

I had heard they had broken up from like 5 different people, maybe not, don't take my word for it...

Heheheh, different strokes. Metal doesn't need to take itself so seriously all the time.

So I started listening to Edge of Sanity a few days ago. Anything with Dan Swano is good, right? Yeah, kinda. I'm having a hard time liking some of their stuff, but Crimson and Crimson II are very yes.

Has anyone heard The Crown? How do they end up as far as being thrash versus death? Do you prefer Tomas Lindberg to Johan Lindstrand for vocals?

Oh yes. Therion's "must have listened to" album is definetly Theli.
Though I have to admit that I've somewhat lost interest in them after Deggial, which was a good Album, but a little too heavy on the orchestra and too light on the metal for my taste.
