Backed into a corner, Argumentus begins swinging wildly.
Passing Attack on northern creature follows through into an attack on western creature |
The cramped conditions in the tunnel made it difficult for me to draw a bead on the giant insect thing that seemed intent on eating the rogue. Not wishing to accidentally hit him and not knowing what other horrors might come rushing down the corridor at us, I conjured up a vicious cloud of stabbing daggers to both assail the bug and deter any of it's friends.
Cloud of daggers on the bug I can just about see at the corner |
The creatures latched onto Argumentus draw out his precious blood, all full of important vitamins and minerals.
10 damage Argumentus hews about him, smashing at the vile monsters but failing to free himself. 12 damage, then 14 damage Argumentus 5/15 Bob wills a whirling cloud of knives into being all around the nearest foe. While it doesn't cause significant damage, the barrier may at least slow down the flapping horrors. 4 damage Motsognir at bat |
Frustrated by the crowdedness of the tunnel, Motsognir charged as far forward as he could. There was little else he could do.
|
A kobold's barking shout rises from the north. "The gate is shattered! Fall back to defend the nursery!"
The kobold warrens are quickly being overrun. Two goblins, spears at the ready, charge into the kitchen. Catching sight of Argumentus struggling with the stirges, they hang back, not wishing to be stung themselves. Fescue 18, Bob 18, Stirges 17, Argumentus 14, Motsognir 8, Gabriel 5 The stirge begins to drain blood from Fescue. 5 damage, Fescue 20/8 Drawing his dagger, Fescue thrusts the blade into the stirge's skull. It dies instantly, and Fescue wrenches its proboscis from his arm. Piercing Strike. 9 damage, stirge killed Bob at bat. M |
Aware of my own limitations as far as close quarters combat was concerned, I resisted the urge to rush forward and attack the other bugs. With space limited in the tunnel, a small chap with a big axe would doubtless make better use of the gap than I. With no visible targets available, I had little option but to bide my time until we could push out of this passage. I did a few squat thrusts to warm up while I waited.
|
Bob's cloud of daggers dissipates as he engages in some impromptu aerobics.
The remaining stirges continue to clutch Argumentus, making no further offensive action. They drain so much of his blood that he passes out. Argumentus is prone, unconscious, and dying. -5 HP. First save vs. death failed. Motsognir at bat. |
Motsognir jumped up and down, but still couldn't even see the enemy. "Oh well," he thought, "Here goes nothing..."
He charged through the woman's legs, leap frogged over Gabriel, and barreled through Fescue, arriving in front of the stirges. He swung his axe wildly, then tried to help the felled human. Viper's Strike Spend Action Point Heal Argumentus |
Charging into the fray, Motsognir flails at the stirges but fails to wound them. Making the best of it, he reaches around the corner and hurriedly tends to the worst of Argumentus' open wounds.
Argumentus stabilized. Gabriel at bat. (not that he appears to have a lot of options, but you can always Ready or Delay) M |
I settled into the Patient Hypogriff stance, as my Mage Combat teacher had instructed me at the academy, allowing me to survey the scene and allow my slower witted companions to act before me. Standing on one leg with the other cocked forward and my arms swept back, I waited for my chance to strike the foe.
Delay until the end of the round |
The dwarf leaned around the corner, balancing his throwing hammer in his hand and looking to see if he had an angle at the enemy at the end of the hall. If he could pull off a throw, he would hurl the weapon at the bastard creature. If not, he'd relax back on his heels and await his chance to act.
Either throw hammer at mosquito thing OR Delay action |
Peering around the corner, Gabriel flings his throwing hammer at the stirge — but misses.
Stirges 27, Bob 26, Gabriel 18, Fescue 16, Goblin Warriors 16, Motsognir 16, Argumentus 5 Having drained Argumentus of all he's worth, the stirges release him in search of richer targets. Motsognir is assailed immediately, but he manages to fend off the threat of exsanguination. The only other obvious target is one of the newly-arrived goblins, but she also manages to avoid impalement. Bob at bat. |
The press of bodies ahead continued to impede my advance so I maintained my stance and spent a moment considering what war cry to go with, once I got to the battle.
Delay action to the end of the round |
Anyone who will actually take action rather than stall: at bat
|
I moved over the dropped lug's body and attempted to distract the creature while stabbing for its throat.
Move to Argumentus' square. Sky flourish at...thing. |
Standing over the fallen fighter, Fescue rips the stirge apart with his dagger. Its blood-bloated carcass splatters wetly on the floor. This hallway... is clean.
And the way is clear for Gabe! |
Spotting a clear spot in the corridor ahead, I rushed forward to stand over the fallen bug. Leaning round the corner to peer into the room, I blasted the goblin on the left with a frost ray.
Move up to corner, Ray of frost on western goblin |
After much hesitation, Bob bolts down the hall and steps into the room's entrance. Brandishing his wand, he fires a bolt of ice at the invading goblins. It splatters harmlessly on the walls, and the stirge-embattled goblins scarcely seem to acknowledge it.
Ok, now it is in fact definitely Gabriel's turn. Probably. Pretty sure. |
The dwarf moved forward, kneeling down next to the body of the prone fighter and laid a hand on his chest. "Come now, lad. This is no good time to be dying. We were not meant to die here. We are purely too pretty for Kord to let us die in this pit under the earth."
He pressed his holy symbol into the fighter's chest and then stood, brandishing his spiffy new axe. Move to Argumentus. Lay hands on Argumentus (no homo) |
To the untrained eye it looked like I had missed my target. The untrained eye however knew not of the inherent accuracy possessed of all elves.
Elven accuracy to re-roll ray of frost |
The ice had indeed splattered off the wall, but ricocheted directly into the goblin's ear, causing it no small amount of brain damage.
6 damage Gabriel crawls between the rogue's legs and lays his hands all over the fighter. Argumentus is restored to 4 HP. Bloodied and prone but awake. The right goblin still struggles with the stirge, jabbing at it with her spear. The left goblin charges directly for the insolent elf bitch who dared to give her a frozen wet willy, spearing Bob's arm. 4 damage Soggy at bat. M |
Motsognir did his best to stumble past Gabriel and the thief, and popped out of the corridor only to see a new enemy had arrived. He drew his axe. He felt like chopping.
Move to square west of Bob Viper's Strike on Goblin |
Motsognir's desire for chopping, unfortunately, does not result in any actual chopping being accomplished.
Argumentus at bat (he's underneath Fescue) |
Argumentus never thought he'd be a bottom. His sudden rage causes him to experience a second wind.
|
In no particular hurry to get up, Argumentus continues playing dead while he tries to get his strength back.
Argumentus' HP 13 / Surges 14 The kobold's defenses shatter almost entirely. More goblins stream into the room, looking to cause any havoc they can. New round: Bob 24, Gabriel 23, Goblins 21, Fescue 17, Argumentus 15, Stirge 13, Motsognir 3 |
