What's odd is that if you ever played Battlefield 1942 Wake was an extremely fun map. The only difference now is that you have the commander stuff, and the role swap (American's used to defend the island, Japanese attacked) So I'm not really sure what caused the map to become so dull. I think it's mainly because the map seems bigger now. I can't remember specifically, but I think you had a few combat ships in 1942. That island for the artillery was never there either I don't think, so they were able to make the map smaller in 1942.

Edit:

1942 Wake

Notice how closer the map is to everything. This made the job of the Japanese a bit easier. Also, that second ship is a destroyer. In 1942, you didn't have artillery per say. What you had was a guy in the destroyers gunner seat, and you had a Sniper class down on the ground somewhere. The Sniper would pull out his binoculars, and click on a target. This would radio in an artillery request. From there the gunner back on the ship could switch to spot mode and if he was any good at what he does line up a perfect shot to destroy the Sherman tank or whatever it was that was spotted from the ocean.

Agreed - Wake Island on 1942 was more funnerer in a lot of ways. In fact there are some features you had in 1942 in general that when you look at BF2, you have to sit and wonder, "What were you smoking when you decided not to put THAT back in?"

WTB Wake 1942 4 BF2 plz. :(

S?ecter Oct 25, 2006 01:59 PM

Not to turn this into a debate over which was better, but there are lots of sweet features in BF2 that aren't in 1942 as well, such as the whole commander thing, change of styles for the classes, more variety of weapons and stuff, and many other things...

Ayos Oct 25, 2006 02:56 PM

I totally agree, but ... there are still some things that are present in 1942 and not in BF2... things that make me go "hmm."

garthvadr3 Oct 25, 2006 03:16 PM

like movable battleships.

I don't care if they are retired from the navy, they make the game waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more fun. I do love BF2 still though even w/o ships.

Anyone come to a consensus on which mod we will play this friday? EF, SF, Vanilla or POE 2?

Please pick POE2. While there are no stats yet, (they are being tested and may be done by this week) there will be soon, and the game is more solid than even vanilla BF2.

S?ecter Oct 25, 2006 03:23 PM

What's POE2?

Animechanic Oct 25, 2006 03:40 PM

Go get it. Good stuff. I need to play with it more.

garthvadr3 Oct 25, 2006 05:06 PM

Probably the best mod ever

Thalin Oct 25, 2006 07:31 PM

I suggested POE2 a few pages back but no one seemed interested. I'm all for a game.

Only if they set up boundaries, like you can't bring the ship into the no entering zone. It was the most annoying thing in the world when some retard took the helm and drove the ship off the map to kill everyone.

garthvadr3 Oct 26, 2006 12:08 AM

true. but thats why we just kill all the retards. Continuously.

Everyone download POE2 yet :)

It was good for a change of scenery, but until now the lack of stats was what kept me away.

Will they have ranks, unlocks, medals, etc? Not to seem greedy, but that's my whole reason for playing BF2. Having a persistent account is gratifying.

Animechanic Oct 26, 2006 01:27 AM

Yeah, the stats are nice, but they really stop being gratifying once you hit first sargeant. After that, the next rank is so far away you feel like you aren't making any progress anymore. Same for badges. Bronze are cake, silver for kits and gold for pistol and knife aren't bad, but gold for kits and just silver for vehicles start to take a really long time. When you look at how long it'll take just to get a chance at your next award, it starts to get depressing.

Also, every once in a while I kinda miss the old BF2, back when hardly anyone had unlocks yet. So the differences in armies really made a difference in how you had to fight. Plus, you could tell where friendlies and enemies were just by the weapon firing sounds. Now everyone has unlocks, so none of that matters anymore.

garthvadr3 Oct 26, 2006 07:06 AM

POE2 has a stats system. I think its still in the testing process so I don't know how many servers support it, but the final system will not require servers to even be ranked. Instead any server you play on supposedly will record your stats as long as it is POE. I know for a fact that there is a promotion system, Seperate promotions for each arrmy, which I think is ver cool.

You can register for POE stats here http://www.poestats.com/

Seconded, never played it, but it sounds good. Currently in the process of downloading it, so I'm for a game tomorrow.

And I managed to get registered on their website too.

Back on the Wake thing, one of the biggest problems I have is being an American assaulting the island how long it'll take you to take a landing craft from the main ship to somewhere like the beach. I can't count how many times I've tried to sneak around that way only to get taken out by a helicopter/airplane at the last second because I have no defense against them during my 3+ minute boating trip. Let us move the ship around so at least it'll give the map some variability (hell, how perfect would it be for the Commander to drive the ship so he can place spawn points right where he thinks it's appropriate).

Freelance Oct 27, 2006 02:45 PM

Okay, so I haven't posted in here much. Sue me, why don't you.

I tried DLed POE once and it was corrupted or something, so I am attempting again right now. If all goes well, we can try playing that tonight if you're interested.

garthvadr3 Oct 27, 2006 02:55 PM

I hope it works.

Animechanic Oct 27, 2006 03:51 PM

Just make sure you're getting the client installer first, then the patch. It tends to be unhappy if you try it the other way.

Freelance Oct 27, 2006 04:32 PM

Okay it successfully downloaded without any problems this time, but I want to make sure I got the right file. Is it poe2_client_v1.0.0.zip? I was wondering 'cause there's a 2 after POE so I thought maybe it's a sequel to the mod. Either that or it's there just 'cause it's a BF2 mod. I got the patch too and installed that.

P.S. Ugh, I think I'm getting sick again though. I started feeling very cold today for no reason, and I just sneezed and now I think a headache is coming. Man, I hate this season.

Animechanic Oct 27, 2006 05:04 PM

Yeah, the one we'll be playing is PoE2. It is actually a sequel, as the original PoE was a mod for Battlefield Vietnam.

Make sure you get the PoE2 v1.1.5 patch too. There are a bunch of download mirror links on the front page of the Point of Existence website.

garthvadr3 Oct 27, 2006 05:11 PM

Great I am glad we will be playing POE. Practice up on the guns before you go in if you want. They do work a lot differently than BF2s but they are more dependable aiming wise and more accurate.

Exactly, and as said before, It's probably because you're locked into a 64 player sized map. Wake especially is huge on this size map considering you travel in a slow transport boat. It's obvious that the level designers wanted to focus on air power as a means for the Americans to take a foothold. The problem though being on a 64 man server, you only get 2 Black Hawks, seating a max of probably 20 total combined. Never mind the fact that no one waits for anyone before taking off, so you usually have a max of 3 people per chopper. I personally just think that EA was taking pressure to get a new map out, so they rushed Wake a bit.

Voila! BF2142 titan mode. I think EA basically regarded all the difficulty they had with BF2 as a beta test for BF2142.

garthvadr3 Oct 27, 2006 08:30 PM

too bad 2142 is worse than BF2. If BF2 is a beta then the beta is fine with me:)
