ID: TheMason
Rank: Gunnery Sergeant
Kits: All, but most-played are Sniper, Anti-tank, and Spec-Ops. (Engineer, Support and Medic more lately, though.)
I generally use TeamSpeak or Ventrilo, haven't even touched X-Fire yet. When on Ventrilo, I'm usually on my friend's server, and usually in a game somewhere with him.

Stats from BF2S.com and
stats from BF2player.com

I generally play on weekends, but likely, any time after 6 PM MST I'll be on.

I could possibly set my computer up as a BF2 server at least during the day, 9-6 MST Monday-Friday ... but those are kind of limited hours. Being relatively new to this whole server thing, would I be able to PLAY BF2 while running the dedicated serverness? If so, I could leave it up 24/7. :P It's not too bad of a machine. Dual-core processor, 3 GB of DDR2 RAM, etc... *shrug* Whaddaya think?

No vehicles actually just means no land vehicles. You still get boats off of the main US ship. I actually had a really good Infantry Only round on Wake once. It makes sneaking around to the far side of the island really effective since the Chinese forces can't just zip along in a tank to blow you up before you capture the point.

Also buying another 512MB of RAM from some dude at my school tonight, so I'll see how much upgrading to a gig of RAM will help me. My biggest problem right now is when I have a grenade go off near me (or a tank fire or artillery) I get less than 5 frames a second while the screen's wobbly, so I'm pretty much helpless during that time (as opposed to my roommate's computer where at least I can see where I'm running and can try to do stuff).

Considering how much it helped me to upgrade from 1GB of RAM to 2GB of RAM, even with the good video card I have, I would say this will make a huge difference.

Kimchi Oct 23, 2006 04:11 PM

Hm, I am getting this game on saturday >.> (Should I get the expention?)

I am not sure how good the connections are, so I am hopping someone would tell me what's ping restriction on most servers >.>

Ayos Oct 23, 2006 04:14 PM

Expansion was worth it, I thought - but only because I wanted more levels and guns. Realistically it's not worth it.

Most servers won't kick you if your ping is below 200, some are picky and you need to be below 150 or even 100.

Kimchi Oct 23, 2006 04:23 PM

Ah. About the spec stuff, let's say I got decent gaming PC. I will be able to run it smoothly right?

Freelance Oct 23, 2006 04:24 PM

Okay, Dominu and Ayos has been added to GFFWiki BF2 section.

I'd recommend getting Armoured Fury. It's awesome and different from the other boosters/expansions, with varied level design (farmland, freeway, and oil rig) and wolves howling. Hopefully we can all play that in our sessions some time.

Depends on what you mean by "decent gaming PC" ... I'd recommend at least a gig of RAM, 256MB video card (BF2 runs fairly well on my ATI Radeon X800 when my computer has 3 gigs of RAM, but it would run flawlessly at highest detail if I could ever get my X1900XT installed) and a good processor, Pentium 4 w/HT or AMD Athlon 64 should do it. Your video card practically HAS to be an ATI or nVidia card, though. Despite having 256MB card before, it was some wack integrated Intel shizzit, and BF2 just wouldn't support it.

StarmanDX Oct 23, 2006 05:00 PM

Ah, that makes a lot of sense with the Wake-no-vehicles thing, then. Naturally I just assumed that EA would have taken the stupid path. Actually, that sounds kind of interesting since the boats would no longer be almost completely impotent.

Appreciated. I DO have Euro Force and Armored Fury, so those could be added in, and to make things simple, under my kits, I'd just put All, since overall I play each kit relatively equally.

Normally I'd do this editing myself, but the GFWiki page gives no legible clue on how to sign up... something about a "form below" which form is not present, unless it just doesn't show up on IE7.

The minimum specs are a 1.7 GhZ, 512 MB RAM, and a video card with Full DX9 Support and 128 MB of RAM on that. Just as a sort of gauge, the computer I have runs it on all high with 4x anti-aliasing flawlesly.

Kimchi Oct 23, 2006 06:25 PM

Okay, here's my spec

Pentium core 2 (something like that)= something around 3.0 GHZ
2 GB RAM DDR2
Geforce 7900 GTx2

Well, when I was playing freaking CSS, I started to get major screen lag on high res (Hl2 and rest were ok =.= ), so I am asking will I get screen lag? =X

KrazyTaco Oct 23, 2006 06:43 PM

I don't see why you would. I can play Half Life 2 and CSS both on All High Settings and with all doodads turned on to their max. You're computer looks about the same as mine, so the problem is probably something software related. Are all of you're drivers updated? Have you ran a spyware and virus check recently?

I'd recommend NOT giving $10 to EA for content that should've been free to begin with and instead get some of the nice free mods such as PoE2, but different strokes for different folks I guess.

Hey you guys complaining about lack of battleracer servers:

http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/6...board01up9.jpg

Some proof I'm not insane to think there are servers out there. Uncheck all filters except for same mod, same version only, and no password. Apply filters then set the game mode to circuit in the drop-down menu. I found 12 servers when I searched.

And Taegueki, your computer sounds pretty damn good. I don't think you'll have any problems unless you want to max out absolutely everything (Anti-aliasing is a major video card killer at high levels). Don't worry, the game still looks great even with a lot of stuff on medium. I just put dynamic lighting, textures, effects and draw distance at maximum since those are what I really care about, and my computer isn't as good as yours.

Oh, and as far as expansions goes:

Special Forces is generally considered to be not as good as regular, but the extra unlocks are nice. You can get the extra unlocks by having someone use your account for one game of Special Forces. I did this for Starman.

Nobody plays Euro Forces.

Armored Fury is fairly popular.

RacinReaver Oct 23, 2006 11:03 PM

Yeah, unless you've got a computer worse than mine

Quote:

Athlon XP 2800+
512MB of RAM (bastard didn't get my e-mail to meet tonight)
GeForce FX 5200
the game should be playable. I can't fly airplanes or helicopters, nor can I gun effectively in any sort of vehicle (pretty much all I can do is drive tanks and jeeps), but I still am able to place on the higher end of my team most rounds. I generally stick to infantry-only servers since the game will runs a lot better on them since I don't have to constantly refresh vehicle positions and everything. Playing BF2 right now is about the same performance I used to get out of my PII 300mhz with 64MB of RAM and an ATI Rage Pro onboard graphics card (running at about the same resolution ;_; ).

If anyone wants to add me to the wiki feel free.

Edit: Oh yeah, guess I usually play as either medic or support. On the rare occasion I'll play on a vehicle server I've started to favor the engineer over anti-tank recently. No special forces, though I'd love to get my hands on that G36E. :(

Does special forces come with a separate key? My roommate and I have been sharing the same copy of BF2 and I was thinking about getting the expansion so we could play together (I know this used to work with BF1942 and the expansions since a few of my friends at other colleges did it).

S?ecter Oct 24, 2006 01:39 AM

I think it's time I post my information and comp specs

ID: drdaverly
Rank: Corporal(this isn't my first account, I lost two others because I'm stupid and forgot my password and had changed emails, grrr)
Class most played: Anti-Tank/Medic
Favourite gun: L85A1, amazing! Also, the DAO-12 shotgun, reminds me of the Assault Shotgun from Deus Ex!

PC:

AMD 64 X2 dual-core 4800+
2GB DDR Ram
nVidia GeForce 7800gt
300gb twin-striped hard-drive
Windows XP Pro
ViewSonic 17" LCD monitor
Microsoft optical mouse, lol...

hope to see some of you around, I play lots...

Animechanic Oct 24, 2006 02:26 AM

Wow, tons of new recruits all of a sudden. You'd think there'd be less since BF2142 came out, not more.

Special forces does come with a CD key, but I rummaged around on the BF2S forums and found that you can't really share. I guess it works most of the time if you play in different servers, but it definately won't work if you try to join the same server.

And as I said, if anyone wants the SF unlocks without buying SF, all you have to do is have someone that owns SF play a single round of SF using your account.

S?ecter Oct 24, 2006 01:36 PM

I think it's retarded that Euro Force and Armoured Fury are 10 bucks a piece, there isn't that much that you even get with the packs, and there are hardly any servers. Anyone agree? I'm not spending 10 bucks on either of them...

Ayos Oct 24, 2006 02:13 PM

I dunno, I liked the new weapons and maps in Euro Force. Armored Fury was a bit more of a disappointment than Euro Force though.

Worth $10 each... yeah, I'd actually have to say they are. But that's just one opinion.

Although personally I think game content additions should be free, $10 is not that bad considering this is EA. Knowing EA, they would have never released anything on the scale of more than 1-2 new maps for the lifetime of the game unless they got some money out of it. I do maintain the opinion that Special Forces was a ripoff at $30 though. It's the same thing as EF and AF, but $20 more expensive.

Freelance Oct 24, 2006 06:10 PM

I'm obviously in the MINORITY here, but I maintain that anything that's fun to me is worth it. $10 isn't going to break your bank either.

StarmanDX Oct 24, 2006 06:28 PM

Call me crazy, but I've nary found any of the SF unlocks to be worth it. The only one I use is the Medic's G36E - I suppose the F2000 and L96A1 aren't too bad either, but I never play either of those classes. Still, it's nice getting two unlocks every rank instead of one. Not that I've payed for SF. >_> I actually would have not too long ago, but for some reason the downloadable version costs $10 more than the retail version. It's just as well; it's probably due for a price drop soon anyways.

As for EF and AF, $10 isn't too bad. It all depends on how much you play them, and there's enough servers - just not as many as there are KARKAND/SHARQI/WAKE-ONLY servers.

S?ecter Oct 25, 2006 12:45 AM

meh, the only guns that are in EF that aren't in BF2 or SF in some form are the famas, the M3, and the HK21. Other than that, the HK53 is essentially an mp5, the L85A2 is almost identical to the L85A1 save the grenade launcher, and you get the L96A1 and RCP90 with unlocks in normal BF2 with SF. I have to admit that the maps look kind of cool in AF, but knowing me I'd just end up playing karkand, mashtuur, sharqi, jalalabad, ghost town, and warlord like always...

Just a little aside...
I've always found wake island 2007 to be horribly over rated, I found it a very boring map. It's very small, and it feels the same every time you play it.

As for SF being worth it? It's worth it for the SAS alone, I friggin love all the guns they get. Having an smg like the mp7 for the engineer is great, and the G36 is my favourite gun in any form, I honestly wouldn't have cared had they had the G36 or G3 in some form for every class, lol, could have had the G3/SG-1 for the sniper, the G3 for the assault, and give G36C's to the engineer and anti-tank and it would have been perfect, lol... Another great thing was the rocket launcher for the insurgent/rebels, actually made you feel like a terrorist, it was great!

Ayos Oct 25, 2006 01:27 AM

Wake 2007 got boring to me really quick as well, but then I realized, if you've got a decent squad and some real communication going on, you can take that island by storm all by yourselves while everyone else is sitting around going insane trying to hunt each other down in tanks and zippy little airplanes.

I dunno I guess the reason I felt no guilt over shelling out $10 for each booster pack, and even $30 for SF, was because I take an occasional poke and laugh at WoW fanatics who pay monthly just so they can PLAY the game. With the amount of content "added" or "fixed" in each update or patch, you're doing yourself more of a favor buying the so-called expansion/booster packs for BF2.

EDIT: This shows you how often I play the game now:
