It's a minor one, but I really hate seeing names being spelled wrong.
Simple spelling mistakes I can handle, mostly because I probably make a shitload myself, but when someone are banging their hands against their keyboard in an attempt to spell, that annoys me.

But the "LoL, ure retard for spelling wrong" thing is stupid. Rip people a new asshole for their argument, not their spelling.

Alice Jul 2, 2006 06:45 AM

I used to get really annoyed by "LOL," until one day when I actually was laughing out loud at something and realized that there isn't really a better way to say that.

Craze Jul 2, 2006 07:19 AM

I guess I can accept grammar and spelling errors provided I get what others are trying to convey, it doesn't really bothers me much cause no one's perfect, right? I get corrected sometimes too, so I'm not too upset over these kinda thing.

However, what bothers me is that some people who are actually asking for help come up with posts that no one can understand- that really pisses me off. If you're smart enough to handle a computer, register in a forum and ask for help, at least spend that extra few minutes reading through your post.

That is also something that annoys me the most.

Post.

And the scary thing is, the guy is 55+ years old (viet nam vet).

And I got banned for pwning him in debate - the moderators on that forum play favourites.

So I had a little revenge...

SHIT LIKE THIS pisses me off. Thank god GFF has no tolerance for that.

Also, the stale "you have too much time on your hands" or variants thereof are stupid. Additionally, any reference to real life (i.e., sounds like someone needs to get laid/at least I have a girlfriend) is the sign of an idiot since throwing reality into an online environment is useless.

Lee-chan Jul 3, 2006 05:49 PM

I'd bet that most of the people who have the criticism-worthy grammar and spelling are native English speakers. Out of the online cohorts I have, the people who are non-English speakers put more effort into making coherent posts/arguments/whatever on the Internet and it shows. Apparently, the world is full of little buggers who can't reread their posts to see that they don't make sense. If they did, they'd see stuff like shortening "like" to "lyk" and similar things is fucking stupid.

Oh. That brings me to something else. About 99% of the time you're referring to the Internet, it's the Internet - with the capital "I". Pet peeve like whoa.

That really is stupid.

I also hate "text" language on the Internet. Most of it is incomprehensible. Also, I dislike bad grammar as well.

ieatjackets Jul 3, 2006 06:12 PM

People who dismiss the grammar argument as completely inconsequential are far too insecure of their grasp on the English language. Occasional typos and some errors are excusable i.e. "I'm nauseous" instead of "I'm nauseated" but bad grammar creates a picture of a person that isn't very favorable. If you don't care enough to proofread your posts and make your writing legible then you probably don't have a good point to begin with.

Attacking grammar is ultimately an ad hominem argument but that's not always a logical fallacy. For example, when you're talking about something subjective that brings in personal credibility, ad hominem arguments are considered admissable.

Also I despise the "it's the internet who cares" argument. Listen, just because you're not being graded on your writing doesn't give you free license to be an idiot. It is certainly your right, but don't be surprised when people attack you for taking that right to extremes.

Is having a problem by someone like having a child by them? If so, congratulations on your problem, I hope it is healthy and happy. I'm sure you'll make an excellent parent.

Unfortunately mate, Merv exists on some elitist fuckwit plane and will never acknowledge the merits of this thread.

Not really. People use the internet for research and real life enhancing purposes you know!

You took the time to type out the sentence and were at least conscious to have correct spelling and good grammar and yet there is an internet acronym! Boooo!

What's wrong with acronyms? Everyone knows what they mean and they're easier to type out.

Also you can avoid the full on F word if you use WTF and GTFO.

What really bothers me is pretty random :) , but it's people who try to sound really smart and complicated by using tons of adverbs and adjectives and complicated words, but it just makes them look silly.

This especially happens in this situation:

"Okay dude, whatever, I'm not dealing with your stupidity."
"May I kindly inform yourself dear forumite that I, ineed, have been educated thorougly throughout my entire life and am, at the present time, strenuously studying mathematics at the prestigiously prestigious school MIT whose name you may have heard if it were not for your quasi-cultured layman background."

Does anyone know what I mean?

I know exactly what you mean. About every single time I meet someone like this they are always too arrogant for their own good and have very few friends. They act like grades are the most important thing in the world and they insult people all the time, even when that person knows the answer to the "intellectual's" problem. They interrupt people whenever they have a thought and wonder why they do not have friends. Using big words can be good, I just don't like it when they try to use them all the time in order to prove how smart they are.

I don't mind the occasional "WTF" or "IMHO", but it's trying to translate whole sentences into that kind of language that is really annoying.
