I have absolutely no excuse for not commenting on the last few weeks, although week 63 didn't deserve any.

Granado Espada Soundtrack CD - Temptation
It's songs like this that almost made me create my philosophy on instrumtentation in the first place. Almost. The strings are corny as hell, but you know what? I don't care. This song is great. Love pretty much everything about it (including strings), especially 2:02. The best part has to be the infectious beat, though. It reaches it's prime at 2:15, when it's accompanied with subtle harmonies. Nice.

Pop'n Twinbee - Graffiti - Sky Avenue (Stage 5 BGM)
Ever since I nominated this song, I've been banging my head into walls, wondering WHY IN THE WORLD DID I NOMINATE THIS. THERE'S SO MUCH BETTER. Then I listen to it, and I realize. Ok guys, I hope you distribute your points while listening to this song ;)

Ever since I joined, I've been meaning to nominate this, but I was worried it might be flanked for being too popular. Then someone nominated the world's greatest song (Super Turrican Stage 1-1) then I lol'd. I thought everybody heard that song already. Seriously, what's wrong with you people.

Anyway, the song itself is just pure 100% solid awesome composition. Nothing more, but that's okay. It loops more than once because it's good enough to do so.

Hunks Work Shop! Original Sound Track - Bonus Track
First listening to this, I thought this week was going to be stellar. But after a few listens, it starts to lose feeling. Okay, Whistling. There's a fine line between using a unique instrument for the sake of it, and using a unique instrument to fit a mood, and this song stands perfectly on that line, which overall puts my opinion neutral on it. Unfortunately, it uses the most boring chord progression of all time (I-IV-I-IV-I-IV Repeat till wax falls out). Oh well, at least 1:20 makes up for it. Still an enjoyable listen.

Phantom Brave ~Original sound track~ - Game Breaker
And haha, this song shows up and proves the point I was making. Over at 0:25-0:55, we hear the wind instrument whose name escapes me, and it sounds great. Everything blend perfectly with it, and it's undoubtedly the best part of the song. As for the rest of the song... ehh, honestly, I couldn't get into it overall. Everything seemed so mimicry, since the melody and most everything at times were doing the same thing. Still, 0:25 wins.

FM Sound Module Maniax - TripleVOPM

Tobal No. 1 Original Soundtrack - Toridon!!
Interesting. At first it reminded me of one of the menu themes from Super Monkey Ball, which would've earned bonus points. Anyway, I seriously don't know what to say about this one. This song was obviously meant to be... um... fun, and everything shows. It's just a crazy jungle beat with some synths and very interesting trombone solos. It's fun to isten to. Um... that's it.

... What? I could care less about that synth horn, to be honest.

Genso Suikoden Original Game Soundtrack - Theme of Sadness ~ Guitar Version (from event 'Teo's Death'
Impressive stuff here. Standard Guitar fare here, almost minimalistic but a clear melody can be found within it. Wait... this is the song everybody was complaining about? Well... I was expecting more, but this is pretty solid and powerful stuff. The choirs make this song lose it's purity (Guitar version LOL), but that's perhaps the best part of the song. Unfortunately, I hated the way it ended all Major like. Mood killer.

Falcom Special Box '90 - A Fast Flight to You (Ys II 'Ending II')
Lovely tune this is. Slightly sophisticated for it's simplicity. My only gripe is the incredibly boring chord progressions all over the place, and at some place, the chord changes seem forced, especially at the end(right at 3:26 and 3:35). Favorite part is at 1:53, though, where the piano develops some nice character. Overall, great song, very similar to one I was thinking of nominating once I clear my stage 5's.

Great week folks, as expected for a Week 64.

Double Post:
What the hell just happened to the nomination queue? Why are so many nominations being withdrawn?

3 points - Phantom Brave ~Original sound track~ - Game Breaker

I was enjoying the playful, lively first half of the track plenty. That second half fiddle sealed things.

2 points - FM Sound Module Maniax - TripleVOPM

That's right. Two points. It's so majorly flawed that it actually becomes more endearing. My cheers are with the underdog so much more when it has no shot at all. As a pusher of ultra repetitive, I must support the other brave souls fighting for the cause.

1 point - Falcom Special Box '90 - A Fast Flight to You (Ys II "Ending II")

A little droning and schmaltzy. Trying to convince myself that I'm not tacking this on to third spot simply because of the lush sound quality. The piano throughout is quite nice, particularly near the end.

Do you even like this song? I don't think people should be giving points to songs simply because of the seemingly underdoggish status. But whatever.

Dr. Uzuki Jun 30, 2006 01:48 PM

Oh, I do. Out of all the noms this week, that is the song I've replayed the most.

Darkcomet72 Jun 30, 2006 02:34 PM

Okay good.

I gave it 3 points BTW. I've listened to it over a dozen times and it still hasn't gone stale.

Yeah. Except I wasn't good enough to make the final cut. I said I didn't think I had anything good enough anyhow, but they were all "no, we want it anyhow". So I give, and they cut me down. "lol, no that's not good at all". "Well, I told you." "Yes, but it's more demeaning this way."

Pray tell, is that the original or an arrangement?

This is my first voting post in a while. =o

I'm just gonna post my votes. Don't have the energy to write full reviews.

3 points for Falcom Special Box
2 points for Hunks Workshop
1 point for Granado

I had to resubmit three times to make the cut, if that makes you feel any better :)

Not to mention putting out like 100 public nominations and then withdrawing them due to lack of communication.

As far as I know, it's the original from Raystorm. Don't know anything about the games and haven't played them, so I can't tell you anything more. Download my nomination and hear for yourself.

I'm going to compare these a little later in case I need/want to change my nomination.

Darkcomet72 Jun 30, 2006 07:26 PM

Nope, you're right, that is the original. I did consider nominating it (Rayforce Zuntata), but it didn't meet my standards.

Also, I've been holding back my other Rayforce nomination because people keep nominating from it :(. Granted, Aquarium was from the arranged (Neu Tanz), but my nom would've come up too quickly and not many even liked Aquarium so I didn't want it up while everyone was bitter.

So, in other words, it wasn't Stage 5 music? :P

NES5M

Darkcomet72 Jun 30, 2006 11:16 PM

Ooh, also forgot to mention, Zuntata did a live version of Slaughter Hour for Live 1998 Guten Talk. It's mostly based on the Neu Tanz mix, though. My fave version is the original.

You too? I knew I really didn't have anything for that particular niche but wanted to help out because I was doubtful Drak would find seven others to participate. Then I got dropped like bad habit.

It seems as if the opinions regarding Granado Espada Soundtrack CD - Temptation differ a lot. And you know what, I'm actually pleased about that, since it's always nice to see who likes my nominated tracks and who doesn't. ='D

Well, as usual I'm too lazy for comments, but I'll vote anyway:

3 Points: Granado Espada Soundtrack CD - Temptation
2 Points: FM Sound Module Maniax - TripleVOPM
1 Point: Pop'n Twinbee - Graffiti - Sky Avenue (Stage 5 BGM)

All in all an awesome week, seriously.

You all suck :(

Anyway, after Battle 08 is finish, does that mean we'll have a Super BATTLE 64 to determine the best battle winner?

orion_mk3 Jul 2, 2006 10:12 PM

I like them results; best of all, the whole thread creation/management thing seemed to go well.

Crash "Long-Winded Wrong Answer" Landon Jul 2, 2006 10:25 PM

Aaaaargh. So close to Gold! I'm gonna be lamenting this for a little while. I can take solace in that the results were very close, though. I'd hoped Game Breaker's uniqueness and energy would be enough to win more votes, but c'est la vie.

I happily accept 2nd place. It's not as though the Falcom track is undeserving.
