She's not even the first lesbian in a comic book. I think that distinction belongs to 'Rainmaker' from the mid-90's comic Gen13. There is also 'Karma', one of the original New Mutants and current X-Man. And I'm sure other comics with lower profiles have explored lesbianity in the past.
The only distinction here is that Batwoman is the main character, not a supporter. It's a laughable attempt by DC to appear progressive without actually shocking readers. It'd bear more credibility if she didn't have D-cups and extra curvaceous hips, not that there are tons of heroines who don't fit the identical mold.
They should just retitle the series "Lonely Teenager Fanservice Series" and be done with it. Twenty bucks says Batwoman faces off against Poison Ivy within a year's time.
