Ah, got this gem booked over at VG+ (Anyone noticed how cheap it was for a new game?)
I have high hopes, this could be insanely great. And I heard something about an 8/8/10-grade from EGM. Next week will be <3. |
this game looks really interesting. I'm hoping its as good as it looks from these shots.
:) I need to get this one since I love detective stuff and the whole mystery genre of movies and things... This will be cool I just know it. |
OK WTF. Does Nintendo not want this game to sell or something? There's only like on review for it on both metacritic.com & gamerankings.com. It's suppose to be out today, yet 3 of the 5 EBgames I went to, didn't even know what "Hotel Dust" was. One store was sold out cause they only recieved two copies. Local target and bestbuy say they're gonna get it on the 26th.
>=/. Grrrr! |

Holy crap, thanks for the awesome YouTube video Elixir! Makes me want to play it NOW. Darn it. I so am looking forward to my gamefly in the mail.
|
Wow. I knew it'd be good, but WOW. Playing Phoenix Wright 2 presently, but I am GOING to buy this fucker on Friday.
|
Damn, this looks great. Actually, I just bought it this afternoon, but I probably won't play it until next week due to a couple of imposing school projects.
|
So only one EB Games/Gamestop had it in a 20 mile radius of where I'm at. But I managed to pick it up today and have been playing it ever since. I'm in love with the art and style of the game play. It's clearly going to be one of those sleeper hits that make this a must have for any DS owner.
|
So VG+ delivered this game to me today, I've spent around 5 hours on it.
Wow. Totally above what I expected. Great dialogs (really!), amazing animations and nifty gameplay (forget phoenix wright, this is more DS-adjusted). And the style, just wow. I look forward to really getting into this. |
So I just finished the first chapter. Meh. Don't see what all the fuss is about. Seems pretty standard as far as point and click style adventure games go. Phoenix Wright had me hooked from the very start, not the case here. Yeah it's got a novel and unique art style but that alone doesn't magically take it from a standard mediocre game to a great one.

A proper review came in. This one makes the game sound frustrating.
It's impossible for a point and click game to NOT be trial and error. |
Fuckin' horrible reviewer.
Obviously, the folks who reviewed it despised the classic "Adventure" genre. Muddy graphics? Crude 3D? Dude, it's a HANDHELD CONSOLE. I think that the fully-rendered 3D display looks dynamite considering the system. It's not the damn PS2. Trial & Error is the POINT of Adventure games =( Otherwise, what the hell is the purpose of playing? You're supposed to explore and think lots. I hate his rant on "missing texts" and not being able to re-read them. Shitloads of games have this same sort of feature, wherein once a message is gone, you can't get it looped. The game looks fantastic, and the review footage makes me want it all-the-more. Seems like something that oldschool gamers like myself will enjoy. Goes to show that review sites and what-not are out of their gourd 99% of the time on reviews. |
"You can spend an hour searching for a clue, and the clock won't move, which can get a little frustrating"
What? The point of most adventure games isn't to get stressed and race against time, it's to keep the story (set timelines or not) rolling. I hate it when they put the wrong guys on reviewing certain games. |
Okay, so the primary thing that is preventing me from being interested in this game, is that everyone compares it to Trace Memory. I've seen a lot of people who liked Trace Memory. I'm not one of them, however. It was just SO. FUCKING. MORBID. There was a loli and an in-game DS and everything, but the game was just so boring and slow and, well, I guess morbid is the perfect word here... that I just couldn't get into it.
To anyone who has played both games - is Hotel Dusk as morbid as Trace Memory/Another Code? |
If anyone has played this game, I am interested to hear how it is. I was considering picking it up at the store. I love old school adventure/mysteries, It has been a while since I have played a good one.
|
Old school adventure is about right =D Has a few dark-humor chuckles in my opinion. The choices for dialogue are either kind/passive to downright cruel.
Some scene I just went through had a kid bawling on the stairs that I was trying to go up. One choice was to console her, the other was "Dammit, get the hell out of my way!" The cynical cracks about the dingy hotel by the main character are quite funny, and to boot, the main character has a shady past. I just played it for a bit and I think it was money well-spent. The artwork and character animations are slick. This one dude walked out of his room with a rather glum look on his face, and the first response was "why the long face?" The guy's face then changed, as he tried to dodge the topic. It reeks of noir-ish stuff, which is what I hoped for. Burnt out cop who retired three years prior is now a salesman. A traveling salesman, which, in this era, was incredibly rough. Living out of a suitcase and that old chestnut. He's paged on a beeper and contacts his boss, Ed, who tells him to head to Hotel Dusk for sales. Also tells him to wait there on a package. Pretty much how the game starts. Once you get to your room, you talk to a girl who is Ed's secretary. Kind of gives you a glimpse into the main character's background and personality a bit more. I'd use more names, but I keep forgetting 'em. OH WELL. I think it's great ;D Recommended if you enjoyed old NES adventure games or PC P'n'C. |
The last game like this that I played was The Dig on PC. I can't wait to check this out :)
|
Ooooh. The Dig <3 I suggest you try Grim Fandango, to boot, for humor.
But yeah, this is a rather dark game. Don't expect light-hearted jokes that often =o Unsure what the secrets are of the hotel, but you can tell immediately that there are some things buried, per se. |

This game totally succeeds Trace Memory/Another Code, though. It's still well worth the purchase.
I played any other DS game since I bought it. |
Do yourself a favor and pick this game up. The story's much more mature than Trace Memory and it's got great character developments and suspense. The use of DS' touchscreen isn't something you haven't seen, but they are pretty neat to mess around with. But that's not all, the best selling points about this game are its music and translation. If you think PW:AA's localization is slick, you can't go wrong with this one.
|
This game surpasses Trace Memory in everything except puzzle difficulty. I'm still not fond of those impossible to fail even if you wanted to end of chapter quizzes, but I guess it would be too much to try to remember every single detail.
