Have we decided where to drop our second city?

3rd turn discovered the wheel.

And shit. Lions out of nowhere killed the settler..

Shit 2x. Bears killed our exploring warrior.

Turn 10, discovered animal husbandry. Set us on archery, and that brings an end to my turns.

I fixed it! Anyone object to me taking a turn now?

Araes Aug 11, 2009 05:45 PM

Damn. Looks like we're in for another tough game.

No issue on taking a turn, since you've missed several, and it would be mine next. Checked the save though, and have some thoughts, since things just got rough.

If we max food (rice, wheat, whatever), we'll grow in 4 turns, and still finish a warrior. After four, I'd think full trees and another Settler, w/ existing warrior as escort, which would only take like 12-15 turns.

I'll shift the first post to reflect the new order of play. Glad you got it working.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Aug 13, 2009 05:08 AM

Right, after all that, it was a pretty much completely uneventful few turns. We discovered archery and I set about researching bronze working, thinking that we might want to start thinning out the forests round Amersterdam soon. I did a spot of micro-managing, cutting down the generation of coins in favour of more food and then, once a new population person became available, a few more hammers. Warrior got built and fortified and I started on another straight away, figuring it'd be better to have the spare Warrior guarding the city while we build a settler rather than having the settler wait for a warrior. I really don't think leaving the city defenseless is a good idea given our luck so far. We'll discover Bronze long before another Settler is ready so that might effect our choice of a new city location I guess.

Save file is here.

Araes Aug 13, 2009 05:47 PM

Far too quiet on the home front. However, almost immediately I get a message from the winds that a huge wall has been built somewhere. Good for them.

http://www.forsako.com/GFF_Civ4_Game...tGreatWall.jpg

The next few years scream by, with constant commands of 'work harder' and shortly we find that weapons using actual metal are now within our grasp.

http://www.forsako.com/GFF_Civ4_Game..._t3_Bronze.jpg

"Oh hey, what's this odd, orange rock next to our city..."

http://www.forsako.com/GFF_Civ4_Game...erNearCity.jpg

The only other source is on the far Western wilds of our continent guarded by hordes of rampaging elephants, horses, and bears.

Without much to-do, my leadership comes to a close, and several hundred years have passed in a blink.

Save for Pang, who's turn it is, can be found at: GFF_Game2_BC-0850.CivBeyondSwordSave

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Aug 14, 2009 03:33 AM

The new Settler will be finished during Pang's turn, have we decided where to send it yet? We could send them round the mountains to the west to take advantage of all those elephants, although that might be spreading ourselves a little thin with only one warrior for protection at first. If we built the city on a forest tile next to the coast we'd get a decent hammer rate though so should be able to build an archer fairly quickly for defence.

Araes Aug 14, 2009 05:13 PM

Unfortunately, I was looking at that, and I'm really not liking our possible locations. We've got:

Up to the left, Cow + Rice + Water, but we'd lose a lot to mountains.
Up to the right, Rice + Elephant + Forests, but no water.
Down to the right, Copper + Gems + Water, but jungle & hills.
Way the fuck off West, tons of resources, but really far away.

Think my first preference would be up-right. After that, maybe spread West, with a stopover to grab the Copper down South.

Build lots of Settlers so we can have enough diversity of cities to start building some wonders and get some Great People. Getting our first Great Person at like 1500 AD last game was pretty tough.

The unmovable stubborn Aug 14, 2009 06:08 PM

Another uneventful series of turns; finished up Pottery and started on Writing. Finally made contact with another civ: Elizabeth of Carthage, who sent a work boat from somewhere to the east of us. Finished up the Settler and started on a Missionary to spread our state religion to the new city. Sent the Settler out (WITH ACCOMPANIMENT THIS TIME) toward a cluster of hills NNW. No sea access but should be a production powerhouse once population grows.

Judging by Elizabeth's score compared to ours, that lost Settler set us back massively :(

Turbo Aug 15, 2009 10:25 AM

Started my turns.

Oh no. Turn 3, a barbarian shows itself near our warrior/settler. Will try to fight it off.
Turn 4, victory! And, a great prophet has been born in another land.

Turn 5, someone built the oracle. And our second settlement has been created. I dub thee... PowaHowsa. Set it to build an archer in case more barbarians show up.

Turn 6 writing was completed.. Going to risk trying for code of laws..

Elizabeth wants open borders.. at this point, I'd say sure.. But Im worried she'll come in and plant a city on our island

10 turns have gone by and we might be in trouble. I'll let his screenshot show you.

Turbo, I swear you attract Settler assassins. Are there any barbs even farther North? ie, is the new city threatened yet? Either way, Shin, you're up.

Turbo Aug 15, 2009 04:40 PM

Nothing up north from what I saw, just the two who showed themselves at the end of my round. -.-

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Aug 17, 2009 04:41 AM

Sorry, been a busy weekend, I'll pick this up this evening.

Don't Wild Animals (and later Barbarians) randomly spawn from the fog of war?

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Aug 17, 2009 05:09 PM

First turn and it looks like whilst we're getting a kicking in so far as the size of our empire goes, we're not doing too bad in terms of technology:

http://www.gamingforce.org/staff/Shinthings/civtech.JPG

The archer in the new city was completed and fortified, I set about building a granary. Was tempted to start a worker there but we were two turns away from a new population. Currently our second citizen is set on a square giving one food and one hammer so the city is growing, albeit slowly. There is a suare that gives three hammers and no food if we want faster building instead of growth. The mighty warrior of Amsterdam succesfully defended against both barbarian attackers, gaining a 10% boost to strength as a reward!

The Amsterdam workers were completed during the barbarian wars and I sent them off to build a farm on the nearby rice patch, mainly so they wouldn't get killed by the barbarians who were attacking from the other direction. After the workers were completed I started an archer, in case some more barbarians came to kill Turbo.

The church of the nativity got built somewhere foreign and some city had a slave revolt. Elizabeth took advantage of the open borders agreement to sail a work boat around the Amsterdam lake.

All in all a decent few turns. We're still behind in terms of building and empire size but our technological wizardry may well help us out when it comes to trading with the foreign devils.

Things start off relatively well, as we're only one turn from an archer at our main city with some fiddling, and fairly close on the granary with more dickering.

http://www.forsako.com/GFF_Civ4_Game...2_t4_Start.jpg

Unfortunately, right after that good vibe, I find out that someone else has founded Hinduism, which means the current tech will only get us some Courthouses.

http://www.forsako.com/GFF_Civ4_Game...4_Hinduism.jpg

And right after that...more barbs from the NW. Must be spawning with the bears up there. Or maybe these are the bears' decedents. About as civil.

http://www.forsako.com/GFF_Civ4_Game...5_t4_Barbs.jpg

Thankfully, the archer at our main city is now well ensconsed, and I've swapped them over to building the Moai Statues, as I think that the +1 Hammer per water tile will pay off big over time.

I've set the city to have max hammers without starvation, because they're perilously close to being "Angry" due to crowding.

http://www.forsako.com/GFF_Civ4_Game...onAndAngry.jpg

As I kind of expected, the archer makes quick work of the flimsy bear child, although it does make me decide to take the Worker North and have him work on improving the second city. My thought had been to improve a food square after the Cows.

http://www.forsako.com/GFF_Civ4_Game...4_DeadBarb.jpg

Finally, as my leadership comes to a close, we're fairly close to having some nice lawn ornaments in our main city, and a pasture is nearly done to help us eat tasty Cows near Powa.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Aug 18, 2009 04:01 AM

I thought that once you had developed a resource you had to build a road to the nearest city to get the benefit? I also think another worker wouldn't hurt. If nothing else we're surrounded by woodland and chopping it down would speed up that wonder a fair bit. Also if Amsterdam is getting overcrowded, we should think about another settler soon, if nothing else to grab all those elephants before Elizabeth plonks a city on our island.

Araes Aug 18, 2009 07:18 PM

Not sure which resource you're referring to. If its the Rice, or the Cow, you don't need the road to see the production bonus, only to get their nationwide benefits like improved health, happiness, ect... On the Cow, Powa needs something to help it grow badly, so I was going to focus my efforts there.

On the worker / wonder, I dont think another would hurt, it would just be a balance between other available items, like the Settlers you mention. The Moai will actually build pretty fast. With all those trees, we've got tons of hammers. I would like to clear the jungle though. Slash and burn.

Agree on the expansion thoughts, and part of my reason for deciding to spring for the Moai and crank them out fast. We need a production boost, and once they're up, every water square our pot-loving capital has will put out 3 settler/worker production + 3 coins. A lighthouse would make that even more, and a Workboat even more so. Plus, the Dutch special structure is a special Levee that gives even more.

We also haven't 'proven' we're an island yet, so that Southern section might link to something.

The unmovable stubborn Aug 19, 2009 01:54 AM

I'm sure the "nothing happened" posts are getting old, but—

- Hooked up some resources via road!

- Pressed Enter several times!

That's it :(

I didn't notice that. Given his run of luck so far, Turbo's turn will probably reveal a horde of angry barbarians with nukes down there or something. :(

This makes me afraid to take my turns :P Which I'll be taking a bit later today, because I have to prep for an interview coming up in a few hours. I'll take my turns when I come back though.

Araes Aug 19, 2009 05:00 PM

Good luck (on the interview and the turn) and if they nuke our cities with their bear technology, just blame it all on Shin.

Turbo Aug 19, 2009 05:29 PM

Taking my turns..

Turn 3: Axemen outside our gate. Hopefully our archers defend!
Turn 4: Yay we beat them! And the statues finished. Gonna build a lighthouse next

And the rest of the turns.. Kinda boring. improving the copper so we can build swordsmen if the need arises, I dunno if a workboat will show up in the lake or in the ocean so I didn't risk making one of the 2 clams..

And thats about it.

Here's the game

Thankfully no barbarian uprising

Araes Aug 22, 2009 07:03 PM

Since I haven't heard anything from Shin for a couple days on this, I'll take the turn after getting some food so we can keep this moving.

Additional Spam:
Overall, pretty quiet set of turns for me as well.

Starting out, we've finished up the Lighthouse, and are working on a Granary (?). I finish this out, build a Monument so we can grow without anger, then a Workboat to get Fishing Boats, and then start cranking out a Settler.

Start

End
http://www.forsako.com/GFF_Civ4_Game...003_t5_End.jpg

Personally, I think we need to keep cranking out Settlers until we start getting diminishing returns, or we have something big to work on. We're just too small to be competetive at this point, and as Shin mentioned, we need to grab the West.

Sorry about that, had a rather hectic couple of days. I can take a turn tonight or wait till mine comes round again, whatever's easier.

The unmovable stubborn Aug 24, 2009 06:18 AM

Finished up Iron Working and started on Mathematics; we'll need to get to Currency soon if we want to expand quickly and not go broke.

Settlers are on their way northwest.
