As Argumentus came back up the cellar steps he set about blocking the stairway with barrels and crates until there was no way for your average zombie to navigate around the clutter or easily smash through it.

This Inn would be a fort.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Jan 24, 2009 08:08 AM

Having found a suitable supply of planks and a saw, I sharpened the ends of the planks to form sharp stakes. I used another couple of planks to connect the stakes, forming essentially a sharp, spikey fence. I laid this fence in front of the inn and attached my rope to each end and passed the ends back through the windows into the pub. I dug the blunt ends of the stakes into the ground slightly so that when the rope was pulled, the staes would lift up and form a blockade of stakes.

I had the barman gather up as much combustible material as possible and form long bonfires in a V shape, funneling any would be attacks in to the stakes and limiting the number of zombies that could attack the building at once.

I hoped the others were making themselves useful boarding up the windows...

No. Hard Pass. Jan 24, 2009 10:49 AM

The dwarf aided Argumentus in boarding up the cellar, and then set to work on fortifying windows and doors with the remaining lumber.

Bradylama Jan 24, 2009 03:18 PM

Since the dwarf set about boarding up what little windows there were, Argumentus finds a spot behind the bar table and naps until danger presents itself.

The unmovable stubborn Jan 24, 2009 11:56 PM

Dusk falls, and the party retreats within the relative safety of the inn. A great deal of work has gone into securing the building, but it remains to be seen how effective these preparations will be. Ewan, hardly ambitious at the best of times, mostly putters about doing whatever he's told.

As the sun sinks completely below the horizon, the dull susurrus from the cemetery grounds grows into a howling cacophony. The rusty gate creaks open, and the dead pour into the streets. "They're coming!" shouts Ewan, and the party clusters behind the relative safety of the bar.

The first of what will surely be a host of zombies staggers into the firelight.

Windows and door blocked at Strength DC 16
Basement stairs blocked at Strength DC 20
Spiky things in front of the door are supposed to be Bob's fence, best I could find on short notice. Functions as a Level 2 Spear Gauntlet, triggers whenever a zombie crosses through the 8-square area of the fence.
Put the firewall as close to the inn as was plausible without setting the whole place ablaze.
Ewan is under DM control unless a spectator wants to volunteer; he's statted as a Level 1 Human Bandit (he has a little experience as a bouncer). If you want him to do something specific, call it out.

I ain't felt this pumped since the long-gone days of my youth, when we used to tip Old Man Gregor's cows behind him. If you seen a gaggle of halfling kids tip a cow before, you'd understand. That was the summer that Skinny Pete got his limp.

At any rate, all our hard work during the day will come to fruition tonight. I admit I am nervous, what with the cavern in the basement and the idiot city-lady comin' up with this hare-brained scheme. I still ain't clear how someone who can't understand a goddamn word said to her got us to do all this fortification.

Hop onto the relatively high ground of R11 if possible; stay behind in Q11 if not

Funny thing, when Ewan's life is endangered he seems to have a little more dedication for what he's doing. Unfortunately, he's also used to removing drunk customers from the vicinity, not actually doing much damage to them - after all, what good is a dead customer? Their sluggish swings were also considerably easier to avoid when they were drunk - and Ewan doubts that these zombies are coming from a house party.

Not really knowing much about real combat, Ewan follows the short lady's lead and waits for the large one and the short tempered dwarves to go ahead.

Move to R7, maybe look around for more knives while I'm at it

The zombies were milling in front of the building just as I'd planned. I dropped my bow and arrows for someone to pick up and ran as far south as I could in anticipation of blasting the zombies before they got into the building.

Drop bow and arrows, run south towards the windows at full speed

The dwarf simply hopped over the bar and moved behind the largest table in the room, setting his axe on top of it and drawing his throwing hammer. No time for talking now. There was killing afoot.

Move to U5.
Ready throwing hammer.
Attack first thing that moves through the front with throwing hammer.

knkwzrd Jan 26, 2009 01:05 AM

Motsognir had been without his lovely throwing hammer since it had been eaten by an enormous metal snake, so he grabbed the most dangerous looking utensil from behind the bar and joined Gabe amidst the tables.

The group takes position, waiting for the zombies to trample over the spikes and bash the door open. Bob sees that ranged weapons are a little scarce among the group, and having one to spare leaves it behind the bar before advancing. Motsognir casts about desperately for something to throw and lays hands on a heavy iron tankard. It'll do.

Bob's bow & arrows in Q8 if anyone needs them

The first of the zombies moves to the door, and tears it down in a single hammering blow. So much for that. 2/3 of the party opens fire on the intruder.

Spike trap: 9 damage to Infectious Zombie
Door destroyed
Hand Crossbow: 5 damage to Infectious Zombie
Knife: 5 damage to Infectious Zombie
Throwing Hammer: 10 damage to Infectious Zombie
Tankard: 4 damage to Infectious Zombie

The other three zombies, heedless of the vicious stakes in their path, move through the opened entrance as quickly as possible (not very quickly at all).

Go ahead and assume an unlimited supply of tankards/knives, they're not really damaging enough to unbalance anything.

These ain't your garden-variety zombies. I'm gonna have to get closer in order to do some real damage.

Bradylama Jan 26, 2009 10:22 AM

The halfling's daring meant that Argumentus wouldn't get to use his sling after all. He drops the sling and equips his ice pick, moving to protect the cleric. If any zombie attempted to cross for the holy warrior he'd be ready.

My plan to hold the zombies at bay outside the pub had seemingly been foiled by all of us being frantically busy doing something at the other side of the building right up until the moment a zombie kicked the front door in. What a cruel mistress fate can be.

Undeterred, I hurled a ball of fire into the face of the advancing group before retreating to a safer distance.

The dwarf snarled as the approaching zombie didn't even seem to be phased by the rain of debris striking it. Truly this beast was a potent foe. Most zombies would have been crippled by now, yet this shuffling mass of necrotic flesh seemed nigh invulnerable.

The dwarf, however, knew no fear of the undead. His kin lived in the dark places of the world, deep within the bowels of the earth. They did not fear the things that shun the light of day. And as a Paladin of Kord, he knew his god would lash out angrily at these mockeries of life. So snatching up his axe, he rushed across the room to stand behind a table more directly infront of the approaching horde of monsters, and lifting a steel tankard, hurled it at the creatures.

Motsognir, unlike his dwarven brethren, knew plenty of fear of the undead. He backed out of the approaching zombies' stumbling range, throwing another tankard.

"You will be one of us!" yelled the dead zombie goasts. Brigid laughed and shot a crossbow at them.

Ewan, not sharing her bravado, hides behind the little woman.

Hand Crossbow: 7 damage to Infectious Zombie.
Knife: 4 damage to Infectious Zombie.

Seeing his clever plan torn to bits almost immediately, Bob resorts to the always-reliable stratagem of burning absolutely everything in his way. The furthest zombie flails wildly in the flames, tripping over one of the sharpened poles Bob had left as a deterrent. The pointed tip jabs through the zombie's eyesocket, and it slumps lifelessly to the ground as its brain is destroyed.

Flame Burst: 9 damage to Infectious Zombie.
Flame Burst: Critical Hit on Infectious Zombie. Destroyed Instantly: Zombie Weakness
.

The dwarves keep up an enthusiastic pace in hurling empty tankards at the approaching mob. Motsognir, it seems, is far more competent in handling his cups.

Gabe's tankard: Miss.
Mots' tankard: 4 damage to Infectious Zombie.

Argumentus swings his pick as the nearest zombie draws near him, but to no avail. The walking corpse latches onto his arm, its rotten teeth snapping away at... his shield. Lucky break there. It makes another lunge, but with the same result.

Reaping Strike: Miss, 2 damage to Infectious Zombie
Infectious Bite: Miss.
Action Point, Infectious Bite: Miss.
FFFFF

A horrible crashing sound arises from the east side of the building. More zombies are trying to break in through one of the windows on the east wall!

Ewan is definitely not the boldest warrior in the land. He does, however, know how to kick things up when it's not going so well. He surveys his makeshift belt, and deliberates like Uncle Jamie always did at the golf course.

"Hmmm... butcher knife? No, save that for later. Bread knife, no... Ah! Here we go. This should work quite nicely."

I continued my shoot and retreat strategy, blasting the zombies with fire once more as I backed away.

Flame Burst at W9, move to P8

The unmovable stubborn Jan 27, 2009 07:15 AM

Luring in the repugnant creatures, Brigid waits until the right moment to lash out with divine fury. Both of the creatures within range are seared by the radiant power, but only one them is actually repelled. It goes tumbling backwards, barely catching on to the door jamb with a tossed-out limb. The remaining adjacent zombie swings a rotten claw at Brigid as she hops down from the table, but she ducks it easily.

Turn Undead: 16 damage to Infectious Zombie.
Infectious Zombie pushed back 4 spaces and immobilized.
10 damage to Infectious Zombie; bloodied.

Ewan's thrown knife sails harmlessly through the empty spot where the zombie's heart would be if some scavenging animal hadn't eaten it. Hell of a shot, under more rational circumstances.

Steak Knife: miss

Hacking away at the nearest horror, Argumentus challenges the mindless creature to single combat. It appears to acquiesce, but this is only because Argumentus comprises a greater volume of meat than anyone else present.

Sure Strike: 8 damage to Infectious Zombie; marked by Arg

Bob throws down another fireball in the midst of the enemy, just as the tiny woman picks one of the zombies up and flings it out of harm's way. He still manages to burn one of the bastards, but can't help feeling a little cheated.

Flame Burst: 6 damage to Infectious Zombie.

The dwarf hopped up on the table, kicking a nearby tankard out of his way and swinging his axe in a wicked arc at the Zombie's neck. The smell of death lingered in the air, and the scratching to the East alerted him that more of the undead were coming. Good. He wouldn't want this to be entirely too easy. Even as his axe moved towards one zombie's flesh, the Paladin turned his attention to another, roaring a challenge to the next closest creature. Let them all come.
