It's Cave Story. There's your good review.

Heh. Well I meant the WiiWare conversion. Some games don't do too well when ported over to new platforms.

GAME FEATURES:
- offers standard definition and Wii-exclusive progressive (480p) graphics
- 4:3 and 16:9 resolution support
- new character designs by creator/designer, Daisuke Amaya (Pixel)
- 10 unique weapons to find and upgrade
- Over 20 boss battles through Mimiga Island
- 15 levels to explore in the vast world
- Classic Controller support
- Three unique endings
- WiiWare version developed by Nicalis

The only troubling thing at the moment is the music and possibly some of the translation but that remains to be seen in the final version which while said to be a Holiday release in the Nintendo press release is being listed as early 2009 everywhere else.

Indygames.com leads me to a placeholder website. Did they go down?

MTGNecro Oct 5, 2008 02:43 PM

Was this website the one you were looking for?

edit: Nifflas is in Nicalis? Fucking hell this is going to be the most awesome port of an indie game ever.

Nintendo won the console war, everyone else can go home now.

Kanji Oct 5, 2008 06:57 PM

Out of left field news, but hell-fucking-YES. I've always wanted to pay for Cave Story, or give back to Pixel in a way that equals the undying awesome he bestowed upon me with his free game. I guess I'll settle for the former for now, assuming some money trickles into his hands eventually.

Exposure for this game is slowly climbing, but I don't think it can ever have enough. This is an interesting console to port the game to, but I guess it really is the best choice. Hopefully, those retro game addicts that bought into Mega Man 9 find solace in Cave Story as well.

this quote has no context. What is Nifflas doing w/r/t CaveWii? Because if he's doing anything, I'm like 10x stoked. But I still want to know what.

That's what I was trying to look for actually, but the website wasn't working.

However Indiegames.com does work, so please Acer, what is Nifflas' involvement with 'CaveWii'? :)

Sarag Oct 5, 2008 08:56 PM

oh I edited my post but I heard from other places that Nifflas is part of the port team.

Dark Nation Oct 5, 2008 09:12 PM

Wow, that is awesome news.

Now they just need to a Knytt WiiWare / Live Arcade update and I can die happyn

So any word on pricing, or was it mentioned already?

lol sorry I meant indiegames.com but uh unconsciously my love for Indy took over

I have no idea what Nifflas is doing particularly for this but apparently Wiiware developers have some sort of circle and have known about this port for a while now. Or at least that's what Luc Bernard, the creator of Eternity's Child, makes me want to think.

WolfDemon Oct 5, 2008 11:04 PM

Hot damn. Looks like I'll finally have a reason to buy some Wii Points.

I've still only played through the game once, so this'll give me a reason to pick it up again, other than because it's awesome.

No. Hard Pass. Oct 5, 2008 11:11 PM

There is a new interview on Gonintendo:

Quote:

RMC: What can we look forward to as far as music? Will the old songs be retained, or will there be something else?

TR: The WiiWare version of Cave Story features all-new music rearranged by Yann van der Cruyssen. He’s worked with Nicklas (Nygren) in the past and we’ve really liked working with him. We’ve paid very close attention to stay as faithful as possible to the original music. Each track is passed off while in-progress state to Amaya so that he can review and approve it.

Yes, the old music and graphics will both be retained via a switch. You’ll also be able to mix-and-match audio and visuals. So, if you like the old art and new music, or vice versa, you can do it. Cave Story has a huge fanbase, we’re aware of that and want to make sure that it’s true to what they expect and Pixel-approved. If they don’t like the new art or music, we won’t be offended and they can play the game in its original state.
Also, here is the official site, but it's not open yet.

FatsDomino Oct 6, 2008 08:59 AM

Okay, that's excellent. I'm glad they're giving us so many options. We all win! =)))

wvlfpvp Oct 6, 2008 10:00 AM

So . . . if it supports the classic controller, does that mean it supports GCN controller, too? Cuz this determines when I will be able to MUST BUY MUST PLAY

FatsDomino Oct 6, 2008 10:33 AM

Cave Story ought to work on all controllers. The game didn't really require that many buttons. I understand that weapon switching might be a bit difficult on just a wiimote but for the rest of the controls you're covered. Considering they seem to be going all out for options you are probably assured a control scheme for the GameCube controller.

wvlfpvp Oct 6, 2008 08:15 PM

Waggle to change weapons, duh.

FatsDomino Oct 6, 2008 10:28 PM

lol what fun that would be

Anywho the website is up and running and despite using the crappy midi infused new music remix stuff it's very well done with levels and enemies being very animated.

Cave Story for WiiWare

And Nicalis has a blog up as well. Maybe this'll become our new JAPAN TIME. =)))

I'd say this is going to be very good. I wonder when they'll be releasing it.

A comparison of what the Wii version sprites will look like against the originals.

Muzza Oct 10, 2008 10:27 PM

...? *scutinises*

I don't think I like the change that much. Looks a bit finicky and unnecessary. A large part of the game's charm is held within those simplistic sprites! Oh well, it could be much worse, so I'm reasonably pleased.

map car man words telling me to do things Oct 15, 2008 05:10 AM

I like the new sprites, they are still spritey sprite charming and none of that upscaled blurry filter stuff they usually do with "enhanced" graphics. Plus there's the option to use the originals anyway so no one should complain.

Gametrailers has some gameplay handcam footage with awful sound. I hope the text sound fx isn't really quite that loud.

Never fear!

Quote:

Gametrailers has some gameplay footage up. They put up a bumper stating that the artwork is work-in-progress. The music is work-in-progress, too. There was also a strange bug where the music was playing at about 17-percent slower than it should. The sound effects haven’t been balanced and are WAAAAAY too loud in the footage you see here. Did I mention the music and audio aren’t complete? We promise the sound effects won’t make anyone’s ears bleed.
