No referee Mario? :(

Damn, this will be a day one buy for me when it's released in the US. The graphics are awesome and that updated version of the Bout Theme is making me drool.

Crash "Long-Winded Wrong Answer" Landon Oct 4, 2008 12:13 AM

What would be truly awesome is if they brought back popular opponents from both Punch Out games. The prospect of having Don Flamenco, King Hippo, Soda Popinski, Dragon Chan, Mad Clown and Narcis Prince all in one game is gleeful. A slew of new opponents would be grand also, else it will feel too old hat.

Ideally, the last foes should be the Bruiser Bros. from SPO. They were pretty cool and were designed with just the right amount of challenge - neither was overwhelmingly simple nor difficult to overcome. That's how the game should feel, balanced right to the end.

Also, a boxing kangaroo as a new opponent would be the greatest thing ever.

Fuck that, I won't be satisfied unless there's a Teleroboxer cameo.

I doubt it. The game WAS originally developed as Mike Tyson's Punch-Out but by 1990 the license to use Tyson in the game had expired and Nintendo just didn't renegotiate a new one. They just replaced him with Mr. Dream and re-released the game which is what I assume they're going to do here.

But seriously. It's fucking Punch-Out!! Love it or hate it, the game is fucking awesome.

Well they're throwing Classic controls into the game as well as motion-sensitive ones.

Control options:

* Motion Control (Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers)
Punch-Out!! uses the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers to simulate throwing punches. Use the Nunchuk to throw a left punch and the Wii Remote to throw a right punch.

* Classic Control (Wii Remote NES™ style)
Fans of the NES version and core gamers will be excited to see Nintendo has also included the option to play Punch-Out!! using the classic layout from the original NES controller. Use the 1 and 2 buttons along with the cross pad to throw hooks and jabs or to dodge.
Also it looks like it's just going to be a remake with different boxers and such. While it's nice to hear the Punch-Out gameplay won't be touched too much, it's sort of sad they didn't try something new with it.

Color me less than excited about this game right now.

Nintendo: New Wii Punch-Out!! Details Sneak Out From Nintendo

Quote:

The Wii re-imagining of the NES classic Punch-Out!! will come with a new two-player mode and see the return of more well-known old-school boxers, according to information released by Nintendo of Europe.

According to a press release from the publisher's web site, which has since been pulled, Punch-Out!! for the Wii supports "1-2 players."

Nintendo's release describes that mode like so: "Punch-Out!! includes a multiplayer mode that lets you and a friend slug it out to the bitter end. As in the single player mode, you'll want to land punches at the right moment to build up Star Punch points that translate into almighty haymakers! Landing and dodging blows in Head-to-Head mode also builds up a Giga Mac gauge. Once full, your fighter is ready to inflict some serious damage."

While we knew that Bronx-born boxer Little Mac and his trainer Doc Louis will go up against Punch-Out!! vets Glass Joe, King Hippo, and Von Kaiser, Nintendo confirms that Spanish boxer Don Flamenco will also return. The roster totals 13, according to the company, meaning there are nine more fighters still to be officially revealed. That includes the unnamed boxer who appears on the Wii game's box art.

Seriously....13 opponents? Super Punch-Out had 16. Sounds more like a lazy ass remake of the original.

Glass Joe
Von Kaiser
Piston Honda
Don Flamaco
King Hippo
Great Tiger
Bald Bull
Soda Popinski
Mr. Sandman
Super Macho Man
Mr. Dream + 2 more?

I really was looking forward to a nice long single player mode with a healthy mix of old and new boxers. I figured they would put in at least 32 (or twice as many as Super Punch out on the SNES, three console generations ago). Even something like at least 20 would have been okay, if not spectacular. But 13? Just two more boxers than the NES version? (One less if you count P. Honda, B. Bull and D. Flamenco twice).

I hope there's more to the story than this. Are the fights significantly longer than the NES version? Will some of the 13 fighters return like the three mentioned above? If something like this is the case, Nintendo should let it be known as soon as possible.

Maybe I'm overreacting, and if I am I apologize. But after waiting 15 years for a new Punch Out!!, you'd think they'd be more ambitious than 13 opponents. What if Nintendo tried to put out a new Zelda game for the Wii that was just as long as the NES Version, except with two more dungeons? How about a new Mario game that was as long/short as the NES version, except with two new levels?

Okay, I think I got it out of my system. Sorry for the ranting.

SuperSonic Mar 23, 2009 10:25 PM

A new trailer and a new character introduced.

Check out what Mac is still using after all these years.

Worm Mar 23, 2009 10:36 PM

You mean what he's not using, right? Because someone stole it? Is that the joke you're making?

I hope this game has some surprises, because I don't know why anyone would pay for the same old mechanics with a 3D sheen. I'll get the original on the Virtual Console for my nostalgia kicks; thanks.

Here's a trailer with a minute and 11 seconds of the same stuff previously, then after that they show off the multiplayer gameplay.

Haha pink jumpsuit still there.

Is Mario still the referee?

First review is gooooood.

Especially when the series in question is Punch Out!!.

Had it been too tricky, the vast majority of Wii owners would have been put off. Like it or not, the Wii's audience is very different from that back in the days of the SNES and NES. Had it been too easy, though, the game would have certainly upset the hardcore Nintendo gamers; long time fans who have been waiting upwards of 14 years for a new Punch Out!! to emerge. This is a tricky tightrope to cross, and yet Next Level Games have done it with ease. On a unicycle. While juggling fire.

...

Pros:
+ Looks absolutely incredible
+ Boxers ooze character
+ Classic Punch Out!! gameplay
+ Easy for n00bs, hard for pros

Cons:
- Multiplayer mode is weak

Overall:
The best Punch Out!! game yet. Accessible for newcomers, but a real challenge for experts.

Total Score: 91% (Gold Award)

Best Punch Out!! yet? We'll have to see about that.

Paco May 3, 2009 01:08 PM

Yeah, I'm a little skeptical of such fellating reviews myself but if it's half as good as they make it out to be it'll still be worth a purchase.

Miles May 3, 2009 01:25 PM

I want me some punch out but 50 dollars is too steep for me for a game that only throws you against 13 fighters. Why couldn't this game be 30 dollars too? =\

Oh well... rental at best! Or I'll buy it from the bargain bin.

In the review (which now most of it has been removed) they mention that once you beat the games main Exhibition mode against the 13 fighters in "World A" the "World B" opens up. In World B all the character have revised strategies and act almost like completely new characters. The example given in the review is Glass Joe gets a helmet so now hits to the head are no longer effective against him.

So it does sound like they've actually tried to provide a worthy experience for the price.

Well according to a review of the game it's more like 26 opponents. Once you beat the normal mode you get a mode called "Title Defender Mode." In this mode the opponents are harder and have tougher patterns.

The review was talking about how in this mode Glass Joe goes to the doctor and the doctor tells him about his glass jaw(his weakness), so he gets a headgear and blows to the head won't effect him. They also say he sometimes fakes his punches causes them to dodge at the wrong time. The result.......they actually LOST to Glass Joe.

If Glass Joe is actually capable of being tough in that mode, then I'm terrified to see how tough the later opponents are.

Enjoyed the movies. I guess it's confirmed Mario ain't the referee this time.

How the heck are you supposed to defeat manhole cover Hippo? o.O

SuperSonic May 10, 2009 09:06 PM

Their website is up at Punch-Out!!. It plays the music from the trailers in the background and gives a showing of the revealed fighters thus far. Click on their stats to see them in action against Little Mac. Be sure to click on Doc in the lower left for a little nostalgia. XD

Also, I wasn't expecting characters from Super Punch Out!! as well.

dagget May 11, 2009 08:58 PM

You know I dunno if it was mentioned or not, but watching some of these videos I've noticed something about the music. The punch out theme changes with who you're fighting against. Like the music during Great Tiger was the PO theme done with an Indian/Hindu style. Von Kaiser's battle had a German-inspired version (from the videos of the Von Kaiser fight I saw on IGN earlier). I think that's kind of cool and makes me wonder how each fighter's music is going to sound.

BTW on the French Amazon site there is a video for Punch Out that shows other fighters in action, one which wiki says confirms Aran Ryan for the game (some dude with a piece of shit trailer trash mullet and rat tail was shown fighting)

edit: Great Tiger added to the official page.

BloodyBandage May 14, 2009 05:13 PM

Animation for Punchout looks top notch. I'm a bit weary about the balance board as well, but to dodge you will be using the controller, pressing left and right. To throw a high punch you will simply push up and then throw a punch; sounds like they are giving more consistency/control to the movements while allowing the fun of the Wii motion to revolutionize this franchise.

dagget May 17, 2009 11:08 PM

Spoiler:
YouTube Video
Donkey Kong as fighter #14 wtf? Could be more unlockable fighters?

Crash "Long-Winded Wrong Answer" Landon May 17, 2009 11:25 PM

But they still haven't revealed Mr. Sandman.

Or - if there is a God above - Dragon Chan and Narcis Prince.
