Interesting to hear that the einherjar are all new. Maybe that means Arngrim's story won't grow even more paradoxical for once. Not that seeing good ol' Arny again would be a bad thing, of course.

Final Fantasy Phoneteen Apr 11, 2008 03:28 PM

I doubt they meant the Einherjar are all new, but rather that the casts in previous games aren't being recycled.

The Plane Is A Tiger Apr 11, 2008 04:14 PM

That would make a lot more sense, but the sentence is phrased in a weird way. It should be "there are all new einherjar" instead of "the einherjar are all new" if they wanted to say only most. Considering Arngrim is the only recurring einherjar, either way isn't much of a stretch.

Final Fantasy Phoneteen Apr 11, 2008 06:45 PM

It's not a direct translation of what the interview said. The quote was relayed by the person who translated it, so don't get too hung up on the wording.

Xellos Apr 13, 2008 08:55 AM

Damnit, he'll be in this game and that's final! They will find a way!

Its good to see they learned from their mistakes in VP2. The fact that the Einherjar in VP2 had absolutely NO backstory whatsoever really pissed me off. I mean why did they bother putting them in at all?

The enemy of friend thing seems interesting. I'll look forward to that.

Now all the good news I need is the confirmation that composer will be Motoi Sakurababa, and that he'll compose similiar to what the original VP sounded like.

bahamuty Apr 16, 2008 02:25 AM

Glad to hear this game will focus on the Einherjar again and the battles will be like VP1. That video was a great tease. I can't wait to play this.

A new Valkyrie Profile on DS? That's stupid.. They should put it on PSP with VP: Lenneth and stop making people buy all these different systems for their games. -.-

Final Fantasy Phoneteen Apr 22, 2008 10:48 AM

Yes, because it's not like it's the other way around, where people would have to buy a PSP to play it.

Please stop.

As opposed to spreading the games around to different systems, thus pumping money from as broad an audience range as possible? There's plenty of DS owners who won't buy a PSP just for VP, and vice versa.

wow I didn't think VP would have look that awesome on the DS.

Now I'm sold, buying this on day one

Final Fantasy Phoneteen Sep 2, 2008 02:56 AM

It plays like the original Valkyrie Profile, but seems a lot like Star Ocean 2, visually. I also like the little nod to the original VP with the beginning of the battle theme.

Gameplay impressions

Quote:

"As the game begins, the camera pans over the land, showing forests and lush mountains, and eventually zooms into a castle. We see a few characters engaging in dialogue, but it isn't long before you're thrust into the first battle. Valkyrie Profile seems at first to play as a fairly standard turn-based strategy RPG, and we maneuvered a character into attack range of a vicious animal and initiated combat. It soon became clear, however, that the battle system is anything but standard. Battles can include up to four different party members at one time, depending on who is in attack range when combat is initiated. Once in combat, the top screen displays each available party member and assigns each of them a face button. Each character has a limited number of attacks to perform, and pressing the associated button causes that particular character to attack."

The game's been out for a couple days, and it's certainly interesting. The game's Strategy-RPG elements are sort of overshadowed by the traditional VP battle system, which plays out exactly the same as in the original. Moving units out on their own is not recommended (at least in the beginning), as they will get quickly mauled by focused attacks from enemy units.

The feather is effectively worthless since most people aren't going to kill off a party member just to decimate the current map they're on. Maybe because of this, the game's decently hard initially.

My favorite aspect so far is how much effort went into making the game a big nod to the original Valkyrie Profile. A return to the original art style by the Yoshinaris, and toooons of music from the first game.

Also, here are the secret characters obtained in Seraphic Gate:

Spoiler:
2F - Kristoff (peaceable but naive Prince of Artolia)
3F - Langrey (cunning but hawkish Prince of Artolia)
4F - Royenburg (not entirely sure, probably one of the main villains)
5F - Ailyth (servant of Hel who presents you with gifts from the Queen of Nifleheim)
6F - Lenneth
7F - Hrist
8F - Arngrim
9F - Freya

Rotorblade Nov 5, 2008 12:25 AM

I take it you're playing the Jap version, GB?

Final Fantasy Phoneteen Nov 5, 2008 12:30 AM

Yeah, the Japanese version was released on November 1. Nothing announced for other regions yet, unfortunately. It will be interesting to see how they handle any localization, as virtually every bit of dialogue in the game is voiced.

chato Nov 5, 2008 12:44 AM

Yeah. This game is awesome. But since I can't really understand shit I stopped to the point where I'll just wait. I really did want to see where they were gonna play the track "Hard chain reaction".

Final Fantasy Phoneteen Nov 12, 2008 11:11 AM

So the game is getting a US release, as the awkwardly-named "Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume".

I've been chipping away at the game, and it's still pretty hard. I'm a little surprised! From what I can tell there's few returning characters from the first game, and even fewer actually join you. Somewhat disappointing, since the game is a side-story of VP: Lenneth and takes place entirely in Artolia. Still, it's damn enjoyable, and Gwendal is a very compelling replacement for Arngrim.

Not to worry, Xellos, you may send me a "BLASPHEMY!" PM.

Final Fantasy Phoneteen Mar 18, 2009 02:18 PM

So, the game's out in the US. Anyone pick it up?

Just started it, but the writing is fantastic. It's pretty fanciful, but it seems appropriate for the setting. The voice acting is... okay. Gwendal is now a scotsman, which is hilariously awesome.

guyinrubbersuit Mar 22, 2009 10:56 AM

I picked it up though I've only played about half an hour of it. I do enjoy the FFTactics meets VP style. Probably after I beat Lenneth I'll finish this one up. Through from what I understand this game is basically a prequel so it's not completely necessary to have played the other two VP games.

Single Elbow Mar 22, 2009 11:49 PM

The game is pretty challenging as you make every single move count. I must admit, the game makes me tense whenever the enemy just comes up to you and pray you don't get slaughtered outright.

Currently in that stage where you have to protect someone from dying.

Final Fantasy Phoneteen Mar 22, 2009 11:56 PM

There's actually like a dozen stages where you have to protect someone from dying (my personal guess is that you're talking about the Camille branch with Earnest at the execution grounds). Over the course of the game, you realize many of the branches offer little variety of story except in what characters join you.

Heisho-Ryuu Mar 23, 2009 02:28 AM

The game seems nice, but since the site I visited it's in japanese I didn't understand at all.
From what I'm reading it's kinda a FFT & VP mix isn't it?
For the graphics I cant tell it's full hand-madre sprites right?
And one last question: I enjoyed both FFT and VP, is this game good enough to live up his "predecesors"?
Thanks to all.
