An artist named The Flashbulb is also helping changing the music industry. He released his latest album, Soundtrack To A Vacant Life, on a lot of torrent networks the same day the CD was released. Several large sites ran stories on it.

The album is awesome by the way, check it out if you like excellently produced instrumental music!

According to the band, 800,000 transactions generated $1.6 million in sales revenue in the first week of the album's availability, despite the fact that the 36-song version of the album is widely available on torrent sites.

Nine Inch Nails included free downloads in these figures, which are not being released to SoundScan in the traditional manner, according to Billboard.

Ghosts I-IV is currently the top-selling album on the Amazon MP3 store; again, Reznor paid approximately $38 to have it distributed there.

That's amazing how well it did.

Anyone else thinking the next NIN album will be released in the same fashion?

A big chunk of that $1.6 million came from the limited edition sales. That would be to the tune of $750,000 for the 2,500 limited editions that sold out. So in approximately 797,500 transactions that were not limited editions, they made $850,000, or $1.07 per transaction. That tells me that there were a ton of free transactions counted in that figure since the least money you could pay was $5. Obviously selling a limited edition for huge bucks was a smart business move.

I think more artists should do stuff like this. It's obvious that people are willing to pay for music if it's readily available and worth a damn to begin with. Not to mention it's convenient to the consumer on a few levels.

Also, I think the price is absolutely on-track. $5 for an album is very reasonable. Even if you don't like it, you're down $5. If you've spent $10 on an album you didn't like, I think you're more wary to try new music since that shit adds up.

As far as the actual album goes, I found the album to be a bit underwhelming, but I only listened through it once. I might change my mind after a few times.

What the hell? A new NIN single appeared from nowhere and now we're told to check the official site on May 5th?

Is Trent Reznor about to turn the industry on its fucking ear YET AGAIN!?

No. Hard Pass. Apr 24, 2008 03:11 AM

He's like the Robert Jordan of music. Sure, he publishes shit all the time. But it's never good, so who cares?

Wouldn't be THAT surprising...
And it would be pretty cool. But then he should probably give it some rest. I love what he does, but a new album every 2-4 months would be a bit... Excessive.
Good news.

Decent song. Sounded a bit With Teeth-ly, but still better than most tracks on that album by default.

Karasu Apr 24, 2008 07:36 PM

^Above Post: Riiiiight....

Anyway, not the best NiN song ever, but it is definitely single material. Its a nice song overall, I wonder if it will be considered a Halo in time. Who knows.

Krelian May 3, 2008 05:20 PM

Hey, guys, another new song. This one's called "Echoplex", and by Trent's standards it's pretty progressive.

I like Discipline more, but this is a long way from bad. Two days, and we know what's going on...

Tagonist May 4, 2008 07:50 AM

What? Where? O_รด Can't seem to find it on the nin.com page...

Krelian May 4, 2008 08:12 AM

Oh, sorry. This one was released through a Facebook app, actually: http://c.ilike.com/d/0000/198/000019...s-Echoplex.mp3

Also, everything gets revealed tomorrow. Halo 27?

The new album is pretty awesome. I like Year Zero more, but this album is still great regardless. I like Head Down and The Four of Us are Dying. Trent is on a roll this year. Its the year of Nine Inch Nails, that's for sure.

NovaX May 6, 2008 01:14 AM

Yeah I'm not hating this either, releasing it for free was the only way I was ever going to listen to this and I was pleasantly surprised. Although the download for Demon Seed was corrupted, if anyone could throw that up for me I'd appreciate it.

Matt May 6, 2008 11:33 AM

I'm surprised, this album is pretty good, especially for a freebie. I wonder if there's some ulterior motive here besides giving it to the fans.

russ May 6, 2008 08:04 PM

Hey guys, I just got the Ghosts I-IV LE that I ordered. Number 1324 of 2500.

Not pictured are the vinyls. It's a pretty cool set.
