Just the fact that probably only about 15% of gamers today even have a Dreamcast to play SC1 on. And while I agree that it does still look very the good. I was just playing it the other day, and the lack of moves and smaller combos in SC1 is just too lacking for me to take seriously anymore compared to the meatier SC3.

I'm by no means saying that SC1 is bad. Just... more casual in comparison to 3. Heck I even still love Sould Edge which I also tend to pop in from time to time... love the music in SE.

Like Dopefish and I kind of said. The games have had magma bosses, dragon like boss creatures, mutant lizards and zombie pirates on top of other things. So while Star Wars is perhaps era wise out of place. As far as the game's reputation it's not really doing anything the series hasn't been doing forever. It's not like some insane cast change like SF2 -> SF3 or anything. It's 1 Star Wars character for god's sake. If you don't like them, then don't use them.

Dopefish Jan 10, 2008 12:52 AM

I'm proud to say that I still have my Dreamcast (gifted to me on 9/9/99) and Soul Calibur, to boot.

Dark Nation Jan 10, 2008 12:55 AM

I guess I'm in the minority in that I liked SCII the most. I wonder what character they will have for the Wii version later on. Obi-Wan? Mace Windu? ...Stormtrooper? :tpg:

Dopefish Jan 10, 2008 12:57 AM

Gameplay-wise, I'd say SC2 had the best fighting system of the series, yes.

Wall Feces Jan 10, 2008 01:24 AM

I'm with you DN. I thought SC2 was the best entry of the series. It felt like a natural progression in every way, and unlike the fucking shitfest that SC3 was, it didn't lose its dignity in any capacity. Plus, Spawn was the best character ever. Bring his ass back instead of giving us Star Wars characters.

WolfDemon Jan 10, 2008 01:29 AM

This was great news until I saw that Vader was only on the PS3 version. I could give a shit about Yoda, really. Honestly, did anyone really like him until they saw him fight in Episode 2?

kainlightwind Jan 10, 2008 01:48 AM

I actually like SC3's gameplay. Just the characters are so out of balance. I know they made an arcade fix and it was a good fix. Just couldn't be something I could play at home. 4 looks great. And you don't have to play Yoda or Vader (although I'll be too damned curious to play as Vadar. Must. Resist.)

Torte Jan 10, 2008 02:18 AM

As soon as I heard Vader breathe, I was 100% o.O

Chaotic Jan 10, 2008 02:55 AM

Seriously, whatever happened to accurate timelines? Isn't Star Wars three billion years ahead of the Soul Calibur universe?

Although it's a nice announcement, it's a hit or miss with me. I like Star Wars. I like Soul Calibur. Put the two together, you might as well put someone for the Wii version if one ever comes out for it.

Forsety Jan 10, 2008 03:01 AM

Come on guys, you aren't being nerdy enough. They say at the beginning of every Star Wars movie that it takes place "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away" so clearly they just cryogenically froze themselves and jettisoned here in some sort of space capsule!

Solis Jan 10, 2008 03:07 AM

Well....that was unexpected. I think it's a little bizzare really...Spawn was a stretch, but now Star Wars characters in Soul Calibur? I'm confused as to WHY and HOW they put Yoda and Darth Vader into the game. Granted, it's not the first time we've seen Star Wars characters in a fighting game, but something like Nariko from Heavenly Sword or Reiner from Kingdom Under Fire would seem to fit the Soul Calibur universe a little better, plus I don't see how they managed to get the license to use them. I guess they just were looking for something to give them a boost to their sales numbers and picked whatever took the top spot on Amazon sales records. Which oddly seems to be what many fighting games are doing it seems...

Oh well, it doesn't matter much given that it's just an extra character for each version. It'd be nice if they made both characters downloadable or available in a "gold edition" sometime down the road just so that the Star Wars fans that dream of having a Yoda vs. Darth Vader match will get the chance to. An unlockable Soul Calibur 1 would be a much sweeter addition though.

Well that would make sense if it weren't for the fact that both characters died during the course of the Star Wars movies. I don't think even nerd logic can explain this one away.

Marina Jan 10, 2008 06:56 AM

IMO Darth Moul would be awesome, I would like to see his 2-blade light saber slicing these good looking characters. :D

Elmoogle Jan 10, 2008 12:47 PM

They modeled the good David Prowse Vader instead of the shitty Hayden Christensen can't-fill-out-my-costume Vader, so we have to give them some props there. I really don't see why everybody's so up in arms about a game where Darth Vader and Yoda are going to be able to fight against a ghost pirate a living suit of evil armor and a giant-boobed woman with that sword-whip thing from Brotherhood of the Wolf. It never made any sense, shut up.

Solis Jan 10, 2008 03:58 PM

Even though the series already had some ridiculous characters, they at least fit into the game's setting a bit better than this new batch of bonus characters do. You didn't see Obi-wan fighting alongside Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean or Leah providing sexual favors to Conan the Barbarian, after all.

They would be perfect for a new Star Gladiator game though...

Divest Jan 10, 2008 04:45 PM

Seriously, just bring Spawn back and be done with this nonsense. I don't understand how swords v.s. lightsabers make sense at all, but whatever.

Either way, I hope you're able to make your own character and possibly borrow movesets from other characters. I think that'd be awesome.

The legend will never die.

Kimchi Jan 10, 2008 07:19 PM

Her boobs gets bigger every game.

Haha, Vader for me I guess since I only have PS3 :(

Forsety Jan 10, 2008 09:06 PM

You have me there, but for all you guys complaining about lightsabers vs swords; it's clear everyone knew they were coming back from the grave to conquer earth because they failed miserably where they came from, so the soul calibur cast stocked up on cortosis blades to fend off lightsaber blows. See how much nerd logic helps (and doesnt help). =D

Are you serious we were arguing about this? :gonkmelt:

DarkMageOzzie Jan 10, 2008 09:18 PM

Regarding the whole light sabers cutting through weapons thing, there were metals that light sabers could not cut through or at least not as easily as other metals. Also before the Sith ever started using light sabers, they used enchanted swords to block light saber attacks. So it's arguable that magic weapons could block light saber attacks and several characters in this have magical weapons.

So we're just going to retcon the reasoning that all the blade weapons in Soul Calibur are now vibroblades?

Lizardcommando Jan 10, 2008 10:16 PM

Who cares if light sabers can cut through metal and shit. It's a fucking game. Does it really matter?

No. Hard Pass. Jan 10, 2008 10:20 PM

No, we're going to say that Soul Calibur isn't Star Wars canon and you can all shut the fuck up. Stop making video games nerdier than they already are.

If you're a perma-virgin, yes.

SouthJag Jan 10, 2008 10:40 PM

Perma-virgin. Reminds me of Ragnarok Online's perma-novice. You guys can view the new trailer at IGN should you desire. Doesn't show any gameplay, but it does show Yoda blocking Astaroth's axe by using "the Force". Massive lols. Vader and Mitsurugi clash as well, but just in a cutscene.
