They who? I thought we were talking about throughhim413 and Gemini. Did we somehow switch to talking about Phantasian Productions without me realising it. If so, then what I said still applies to a certain extent. Without a debugger, it takes far longer to hack the ASM routines, and it is far more difficult to find the cause of any bugs that might arise along the way. It's not impossible to do the hack, but it is immensely more difficult.

The GBA and the DS have debuggers. The PS1 and the PSP both have debuggers. As far as I know the PS2 does not. If they can do ToD it will take years. I dare say the actual translation is coming along in some ways, but things like skit subtitles will be damned difficult without a working debugger.

I chose that game for comedic effect, and I was aware that a project had been started for the sequel. I believe this choice in translation was because of the stories about the "Pokemon Diamond/Jade" piracy scams that involved this game's direct predecessor, and not because of any sort of demand for a translation.
Probably. It seems to be of interest only as a curiosity.

Pretty safe to assume you weren't a Working Designs fan!
I tend think that I'm the furthest from a Working Designs fan that it is possible to be. I do own one or two of their games, but I don't really enjoy the titles they worked on. I don't even think that has to do with the localisation in most cases, although I'm sure it doesn't help. Most of their titles just don't... jump out at me.

I don't think you'll be waiting long. I heard that the translation is complete, and they are really just polishing it up at this point. I can't be sure, but everything they ever posted about that implies that we'll see a release before too long.

Gechmir Dec 27, 2007 12:36 AM

I've heard the same~ <3

He doesn't really care. Cless is kind of bummed though that the project has hit yet another standstill (in fact their translator who was supposed to finish up everything just admitted he doesn't have the motivation to do anything in life anymore so he's dropping out of the project, so it's on hold for some time).

Not really impressed with throughhim's work though, he still has a ways to go. Gotta give him credit for learning so much in a little time however. It's certainly better than what we've been exposed to (DeJap & GBA) that's for sure.

I knew this reply was coming.

That has to suck though when you're so close to being done with the project only to have the person bail out near the end. Then again, after years of work on it I would probably stop caring too.

It's happened to him before too... he has terrible luck. There isn't really any animosity between the two translation groups though. They seem to be on perfectly fine terms really.

I'm just glad *SOMEONE* finally finished this, cause the SNES version just plain fails compared to it; and the GBA version runs like a fucking snail and is like a freaky snes/psx hybrid beast. This is DEFINITIVE version, the PSP one is just a small improvement over it with full voices instead of some; and redone sprites in battles which is a subjective sort of thing anyway since some people preferred the originals.

I actually bought a copy of this like 5 years ago (Playstation the Best version, though) and started to feel like it was a waste of time. I know I could have easily pirated it, but I didn't want to. At least they made it worthwhile now, so cheers.

Yeah, ok. I guess I can't really complain about errors since this was free after all. But if I'm already noticing them less than an hour into the game. =O

Just to play Devil's advocate and all, but I've seen bigger typos than that in commercial releases.

OMG YES SECONDED.

:D

I'm definately putting this into my PSP. I'll start playing it after I've finished playing my current run on Earthbound :)

Be sure to set disc loading speed to 'normal' for a mostly glitch-free run through the game. There's a small chance that some of Mint's techniques can cause the PSP to freeze but that's apparently an issue with the game not the patch.

Will do. Thanks for the tips!

I'm so glad someone finally got around to translating the psx version! The GBA translation was just sad and I know a lot of people bitched about the snes translation, but I never got around to playing it. The psx has more stuff in it anyway, so it needed a release at some point. I also hope this team works on ToD2 so we may someday actually get to play it. I've been wanting to play that ever since it came out.

I also want to play that so bad! Earthbound FOREVER, DAMNIT.

Umm does this work with SwapMagic 3.6?

map car man words telling me to do things Jan 6, 2008 06:59 AM

I don't think Swap Magic allows PS1 games.

Musharraf Jan 6, 2008 08:03 AM

Oh well, so no Tales of Phantasia for me :(

Thanks anyway :)

Inhert Jan 6, 2008 04:46 PM

why not just play it on a pc emulator? that's what I'm doing...

mortis Jan 6, 2008 07:25 PM

Inhert brings wisdom with that comment.

Same here. I've been playing it on ePSXe with my friend over Kaillera. It really annoys me that you have to use a channeling ring on your character to play 2p, but oh well. ¬.¬ The translation seems perfectly fine thus far and the game is a lot of fun to play. There are a lot of nice new things compared to the SNES version (so far I think some of the best stuff are skits and the fact that Chester has skills). I never played the SNES version all the way through so this is pretty awesome~

Musharraf Jan 16, 2008 11:26 AM

Would somebody be so kind and upload a SPCH1001.BIN file. Yes, I am too lazy to look it up right now!
