Definitely Fragfest. As much as I also like some tactical shooters (FEAR and all that), an adrenaline rush suits me better since I don't like the concept of suspense for the most part.

I tend to enjoy both styles quite a bit, though I might slightly lean toward good old fashioned fragfests. I'm not sure why. Perhaps because I don't spend as much time playing video games as I used to, and when I do, I'm usually looking for a way to relax, for which a quick game of Unreal Tournament, its derivatives, and its peers, all do wonders.

Are they any FPS games that balance the two aspects well? The only game I've ever played that seems to come close to that is Battlefield (but I haven't played that game in ages).
Generally there are too many games with realistic situations and weapons that go for the tactical approach. I'd like to see a fragfest version of CS (though I haven't sampled many FPSes, so I might be ignorant to the existance of a lot of them).

FEAR is hardly a tactical shooter.

Not that I can think of. Either a game goes for realism, or arcade style. Battlefield 2 just uses authentic looking weapons. Though I suppose if you do get a good squad, and a hell of a commander, it would be more than just a bunch of rambo's running around. Seeing how a good Commander and a good squad can turn the game from chaos into something more strategic.

I like a little of both, but if I was to choose between the two, I'd definitely go with the fragfest option. Unreal Tournament (and its sequels) just owns in my mind. CS or Battlefield 2 or Star Wars Battlefront 2 are all right, but I think they mostly lack the rush you can get with UT.

I prefer obliterating someone more than a headshot myself. Few things are more satisfying IMO in UT than getting someone right in the head or chest with a big glob of goo from the Biorifle. :D

I prefer FPS games that are more on the realistic side. I don't like to shoot an entire clip from an SMG into someone's back and have him turn around and kill me with one bullet as it has happened in CS back when I used to play it. I liked CS even though it had some annoying aspects. It was already more realistic than games like Quake or Unreal.

I'm currently playing Battlefield 2 and I love it. You can rarely survive for a long time while going Rambo as every class has its advantages and disadvantages. Playing in a diverse squad helps very much and is often much more fun. For example, in a squad: a sniper can spot enemies and take care of them in a very precise manner, a medic will heal and revive others while still being able to put up a fight, the Anti-tank soldier will be very important when your squad has no other choice than to engage enemy armor etc.

I prefer frag fests because I love seeing the effects of something as powerful as the Redeemer in Unreal Tournament and it's more exciting for me but a bit less suspenseful though, but often times, you might just be ambling around looking for ammo then someone pops up and you have to kill them and you didn't expect them to find you.

fragfest, primarily because most tactical games online devolve into fragfests anyways. However there is always playing with clans and stuff where the folks have a sense for teamwork and will listen and give suggestions for a plan then actually put some effort into carrying it out. This kind of stuff happens only like what? once in a blue moon? So overtime you just learn to fend for yourself and play fragfest.

Frag Fest for me as well. Never could get myself to enjoy those tactical shooters that let you watch all the other players move like a sloth while you wait for the next round of "fun".

I'm actually somewhat surprised by the responses in this thread so far since I remember years ago when it seemed like everyone only liked Counter-Strike, Infiltration, Tactical Ops, Strike Force, and other such realism mods and games for the FPS genre.

Fragfest, because waiting 2~5 minutes in games such as counter-strike for campers to actually move and get their job done is ridiculously boring and annoying.

I like tactical as well, but that would depend on the level of play. If it's full of people who are good at the game, and you suck, it's going to be no fun. If it's one where everyone sucks, it's much more fun.

It would be better if people were forced to follow their mission. If you need to save hostages, do it, whether it's slow or not, do it. Not sit there, behind some box, waiting and listening for somebody to come near. And when a camper dies, well, that's even more funny.

It's funny how you guys consider Counter-Strike to be tactical.

Come on, the shotgun has an insane amount of range. Tactical game my ass.
