More info on the game at TGS, by Kotaku:

Aside the super-brief trailer shown at Microsoft's pre-TGS conference that's now looping at Square's booth and the anemic website, tri-ACE hasn't really given us much about their long-festering, upcoming RPG Infinite Undiscovery. Piling into a hotel suite with director Hiroshi Ogawa (tri-Ace) and producer Hajime Kojima (Square-Enix), they filled in a few of the blanks for us, including the big question: "What the hell does 'Infinite Undiscovery' mean?"

While the "underlying concept" of the game is discovery, the "overall concept of the game is that it's always going." The game's engine, in fact, seems to be its raison d'etre. Everything is in real-time, so that it's hard to separate the battle system from the rest of the game—it's seamless. For instance, weather and other outside forces can influence the battle, like a tsunami. World damage is persistent as well, so that if a wall or something is destroyed by a dragon, it stays that way. Interestingly, Ogawa said it's kind of like an MMO in that way, but single-player with a party system.

More specific details about the game's engine—in particular the battle mechanics—beyond that point were disappointingly scant. For instance, we were told you only directly control the protagonist during battle, but wouldn't elaborate on the "systems" you'll use to control your other party members.

Moving on, we talked a bit about the game's plot—or rather, they laid it out for us, since the teaser isn't exactly an expository wonder. Basically, the moon gives power to the people of the planet; some asshole (probably the guy with pink eye in the trailer) slaps some chains around it, causing the world to start to crumble. Naturally, a hero shows up for some questing action to cut the chains. But, you're not that hero. No, no, you just look exactly like him and find yourself sucked into 40 or so hours of RPGness spread across multiple discs. There's something "special" about your character, but you have to discover that when you play.

Frustratingly, "all business questions" were off-limits. To translate, "business questions" meant anything about how the game landed on the 360 exclusively as opposed to the system-which-cannot-be-named. They are hoping to make use of Xbox Live, though right now they're not sure how.

In a roundabout way we were able to ask about the development process, which goes back 10 years for the original idea, four years for active planning and two for full-steam ahead work on the game, which has been consuming "roughly" the same amount of resources as Star Ocean 4. When we asked if they've been able to stay within budget and timeframe, Kojima and Ogawa responded with some very hearty laughter. But they quickly added that is "no such thing as a smooth development process."

Oh, and the meaning of the game's title? Well, the opposite of a "discovery" is an "undiscovery." And they're sort of infinite. Yeah. Sorry guys.

The opposite of discovery is indiscovery, though.

They're probably just hiding that it was just a typo. I mean, U and I are right next to each other!

PS: This game's music sounded more toward Valkyrie Profile if anything.

Tankalex_Storm Sep 24, 2007 02:17 AM

I agree, it does sound like he's going with his angelic Valkyrie Profile style for this game.I also would like to add that it's good to see a forum were the majority of the people posting on it can appriciate the pure genius of Motoi Sakuraba.

Square Enix: Infinite Undiscovery Finds Release

Trailer, with English voice acting:

Infinite Undiscovery: The Finite Trailer

Innuendo Dive? Sounds like they're trying too hard to be creative with the attack names. The gameplay looks like it lives up to the frantic standards I have with Tri-Ace. Everything else about it is not too impressive though. I have hope for it though. High enough hopes to make a purchase at day one at least.

Cetra May 22, 2008 12:08 AM

What the hell, did the Microsoft money run out? I'm not impressed at all with the latest trailers.

SouthJag May 22, 2008 12:10 AM

Hahaha Innuendo Dive? What the fuck is that, seriously. I just watched the trailer and I'm usually the first person to support English VAs, especially in video games, but that sounded pretty awful.

I'm all for the next big tri-Ace game but...I dunno. Manny you're right though, the battles look really frantic - Star Ocean 3 with a rotating camera, perhaps.

Star Ocean 3 wasn't exactly what I had in mind, but it's close enough. I just hope it's NOT Radiata Stories...

SouthJag May 22, 2008 12:53 AM

I can only imagine.

"Innuendo Dive!"
*kick*

Ramenbetsu May 22, 2008 02:00 AM

Looks great. The frame rate is kind of up in the air at the moment and the VA is horrible but I've gotten used to that in JRPGs. I say bring it on. Most likely day one for me.

Grail May 22, 2008 09:28 AM

I heard "Arching Boots!" and I was pretty much done there. It's a pretty sad state of affairs if the voice acting from Star Ocean 2 is better than this. Other than that, seems like it has a decent battle system. I can only hope that the VA has an option to be disabled.

The Plane Is A Tiger May 22, 2008 10:38 AM

The VAs all seemed pretty average except for the bad guy. He sounded like someone was tickling him as he delivered his grand monologue of evil, but maybe he'd just been hit by an Innuendo Dive.

That aside, I'm glad to finally have a release date. Sucks that it's coming out right after school starts back, but at least it's something to look forward to. The first trailer for this was one of the main reasons I finally broke down and bought a 360, so I can't wait.

nanaman May 23, 2008 01:05 PM

First, upon hearing the news of a new Tri Ace game (with a funky title) I was like; :fap:

Then after watching the English trailer; :gonk:

I think I'll just be happy with SO4 on the PS3.

No. Hard Pass. May 23, 2008 03:18 PM

It took me a few times watching it, but I finally figured out what this reminded me of.

Legend of Dragoon.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor May 23, 2008 03:27 PM

Except that somehow, the art is even worse. I'd take Meru and Dart over...well, this, any day of the week.

Rotorblade May 23, 2008 03:31 PM

I would like to "undiscover" this game now, please. Who knows? If it's this poorly designed aesthetically, perhaps it'll play better than Operation Darkness.

russ May 23, 2008 03:40 PM

"Hey guys, I'm totally a bad dude. Look, I'm wearing a black outfit and have this redhaired skank on my arm. I've got this weird mask thing going on, so clearly I'm up to no good, and quite frankly, you white hats are outclassed here. Save us all some time and get out of here."

No. Hard Pass. May 23, 2008 03:47 PM

I bet Kongol pops up in the next trailer.

"Hey what up guys? I'm the giant character who is hilariously expected and woefully disappointing!"

Final Fantasy Phoneteen May 23, 2008 08:39 PM

ITT we come up with lame puns to describe disappointment.

"More like tri-Ass"

"I'm infinitely uninterested"

"I'd like to undiscover this one"

Tri-Ace needs to Tri-Harder.

Well u never know... the idea sounds recycled though <.....< And the title is.... well I believe it's already been talked about lol

I played Star Ocean 3 - really liked it up to the end of Disc 1 then I was like bleh - BUT I DID have fun while it lasted - the inventions kept me going and the post-game bosses.

I JUST finished Radiata Stories and well somehow I actually did NOT hate it (it was short and boring)... nor did I like it.... but it was very weird... it made me go WHAT????? (the non-human ending... was NOT expecting a KID like Jack to choose saving BLANK over preserving BLANK - what are they trying to teach us here?)

Eitherway, I am STARVED for next-gen RPGs... even though I dun have a 360 (but man the screenies do look NICE!!!). I mean an additional RPG is never a bad thing - if it sucks then I'll get it when the price goes down (dun have great hopes for this one).... now more news on STAR OCEAN 4 PLEASE (and on the PS3 so I can finally purchase one)

On a side note.... more next-gen rpgs are NEEDED <--- my one reason why I haven't bought a next-gen console yet

PS. I wish we'd get more info on FF vs XII and a NEW SUIKODEN PLEASE!!! Though S-E has been quite disappointing lately.

Jesus fucking Christ. Wrong thread to argue about Lame Ocean 4.

On a completely different note: Undiscovery looks fun (oh wrong speling u japs) but I am skeptical as always. Cookie cutter story is what I fear (along with characters that look generic now too).

Definitely an eye out, but not expecting something out of this world. Also isn't Lost Odyssey already next-gen (though it's just an improvement in graphics but the combat system remains the same).

Tsunade May 26, 2008 04:10 AM

^Sry about the SO4 mention (not arguing btw)... was just thinking along the lines of if IU is exclusively 360... then I'm hoping the PS3 gets SO4 (so I can decide which next-gen console to go for... besides same makers right :P).

The thing is - I've always been a PS fan simply because I'm big for RPGs (yeah I'm crazy in that aspect.. just bought a whole load of PS1 RPGs and currently plan on playing them lol).... but I'm not what you call a crazy fangurl and I'm always out for any additional options. I know there's Lost Odyssey. However, that's not enough (by itself) for me to turn my back on the PS (I know the 360 got great games - but I'm aiming MAINLY for RPGs).

The addition of this game MAY though 'cause it LOOKS very nice, the character designs aren't bad, the music is neat, the trailer's kinda fun but the story (so far) is kinda bleh (but I mean you never know in this aspect) and the title is pushing me away. Eitherway, I'll be keeping an eye on this title and any further updates.
