That's right, I called it.

Also, I like how you accuse Choppa of not having enough hooks when it has THREE distinct and catchy melodies, while Wanlong has virtually no hummable parts to speak of. :P

Choppa had one good hook used twice (1:26, 3:41). The other one (:58, 3:13), I wasn't feeling. Correcting myself, I'll say it could have used a catchier first hook. Just an opinion, as you enjoyed it more.

And you're right, foo. Choppa lacked the GROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE to drive it along. You can only dedicate so many channels to grooooove for an NES chiptune. If it had been an 8 channel piece, maybe.

Why should you have to be able to hum a song for it to be catchy? The entire rhythm of Wanlong Mamoth was the hook, and then there's the verses (:27, 1:41, 2:37) which are developed a lot longer and have 3 different, extended variations.

Didn't listen to the songs enough this week in order to vote. Choppastyle probably deserved the gold. Not sure about #2 and 3.

I have to say I really enjoyed Wanlong Mamoth. Sometimes tracks made up of a bunch of samples like this can be really enjoyable.

I also want to say that Grand Fantasm has much better tracks; it's kind of odd that this one got nominated. Nothing against whoever nominated it, of course, we all have our own tastes.

* Album: Odin Sphere (game rip)
* Title: Winterhorn Mountain - At War
* Disc Number: 1 (of 1)
* Track Number: N/A
* Year: 2007

Linky.

I don't think there's an official rule about nominating songs from newly released games, but I think the unofficial majority stance was to give games some time to see if their music (and the game itself) becomes popular. Iirc, someone nominated Zero from Ace Combat 5 when it was only out in Japan, but people said since there was a good chance its music would be popular / it was a high-profile title, it shouldn't be allowed.

Obviously, if you're nominating something from some no-name game that just came out, it would be a different matter. But considering Odin Sphere's received a lot of attention and features music by Sakimoto (mainly due to the latter), I'd say hold off on that, at least for now. If a few months go by and no one seems to care / talk about the music, then maybe it would be fine.

At least, that's my take on the matter. Other thoughts?

Ahaha. All I gotta say is...

CHIPWNT

Sorry, it's just this is the first time my nom's won, so forgive me if I go overboard on the gloating. :D

Too bad about Wanlong though. That track had spunk.

I was thinking of nominating something from the game and held off for that very same reason, though I'm not opposed to it per se.

What's the length of that song, by the way? My rip has generic names and I'm curious if it's the one I toyed with nominating.

THE POWER OF WATER Jun 25, 2007 01:34 AM

Yeah, that's the "novelty is not obscurity" pseudoclause that's not actually in the rules. There's no OST announced yet, but I assume Odin Sphere will eventually get a soundtrack release with that composer lineup (then again, Monster Kingdom: Jewel Summoner is even more stacked and there's no CD for that for who knows what reason).

Letting it wait for a while would be the customary thing to do.

Dr. Uzuki Jun 25, 2007 02:35 AM

Ok, no contention from me about waiting on Odin Sphere.

Orion, I assume I picked up the same rip you have, it was track DISC0006.ADX in the rip. I renamed it on the basis of where it plays in the game and that it's a battle theme (a different theme for each area plays in rooms/stages with no enemies). I was also considering nominating DISC0052.ADX which is the theme for a sub-boss. Some other ones too, but most of my other favorites have continuous sound effects in the background.

I'm thinking of something else, but it's from the Phantasy Star Sound Collection Vol. 2 soundtrack, so should I just give up the thought on that one right now or what?

Darkcomet72 Jun 25, 2007 06:10 AM

Hey a chiptune won a week, when has that ever happened.

Also congrats, Dhsu, for first win!

A PS1 arrange from the first sound collection was okay, so I don't see a significant issue unless a lot more people have heard PS4 than PS1.

Good selection. I was actually thinking of nominating DISC0003.ADX myself.
