It sounds to me like Soldier's reasoning for editing out the sex scenes from the Evangelion doujin for RE-Take (though he did do it for his little sister), while I felt they were a bigger part of the whole (and the strange atmosphere).
I must fail at the internet, since I don't hear about these things until years after they came out [whats next, a sequel to Xenosaga 3? :wish:]. Evangelion was an awesome anime, one of my favorites. As a fan I can't believe I've never heard about this RE-Take. The download just finished so I'm going to start reading it right now. :)

There's also Hirameki, a company that translates visual noves and struggles to sell them. They brought KiD's Ever 17 over here. Visual News has a bunch demos and doujin visual novels translated by their community, if you didn't already know.
Thanks for the info, I'm going to look up some of their works later. It'll be nice to play another game like KLS.

Is there a scene where you've blown a massive load on your sister's face? If so, I kinda feel like that would destroy any artistic value the game held.

No there aren't any scenes like that in KLS. They're actually sensual and have meaning. The characters don't just go 'Hey wanna fuck?' 'Ok!'

Infact, and this may be a minor spoiler.
..
..
You only have sex with two different girls, not a whole harem like most games. Taka's girlfriend and his adopted sister.

RacinReaver May 30, 2007 11:14 PM

Oh, I guess if you're only fucking your girlfriend and your sister you're a pretty classy guy.

That is if we're defining classy as a candidate for the Jerry Springer show.

So you're a classy guy for taking weak potshots at a game you've never played?

Now now RR. Not all of them need to be held in so much contempt (or feared, it seems). They're not great literature, but give 'em a break since they're not all about tentacles and kitchen utensils, even if you seem to want them to be.

Well, yeah. That's why you see rated R movies - because they have death, swearing, explicit violence, and/or sex in them. You do not go to the theaters to see the Terminator because of the gripping plotline, you go to see an Austrian muscleman blow things up for an hour and a half. If your focus is on storytelling, you don't distract from that with titilating content.

The only exceptions that come to mind are movies that are trying to be brutally realistic for a reason, like Schindler's List. Outside of that, you'll be hard pressed to find an R rated movie that wasn't as much about the nudity as it was the plotline.

Simply put, sex scenes aren't a means, they're an end unto themselves. The story would work just as well if boy and girl go to bed together, then it fades to black, like it does in so many other media. Ergo, they're doing themselves a disservice including sex scenes in the game because it detracts from the whole, rather than compliments.

map car man words telling me to do things May 31, 2007 07:56 AM

Maybe it's the European in me talking here, but I still don't see how it's doing a disservice. Sure, you can remove the sex scenes and the story will be there, just as you can remove, say, the references to drugs in Trainspotting or any talk of sex in Y Tu Mama Tambien. But why? Why has the age rating thing conditioned people to think that anything raising the rating is something excessive and gratuitous. The sex scenes don't detract from anything since they're a part of the whole. You follow the storyline, you care about the characters, they fall in love, they have sex, and you're happy for them. They could fade to black, but showing the characters making love makes a much more effective statement about just how the two feel about each other.

It's not a game that would be played by regular gamers anyway. It IS an h-game, it makes no attempt to hide this, it simply is more gentle and honest than what's generally in games of this type (dating simulators as people assumed earlier). The audience is obviously completely different (at least that's what everyone's trying say, apparently).

I'm reminded of Fahrenheit's notorious sex scenes that were cut out from the US version, even though they showed more of the characters' relationships than could be shown without them (though Lucas' and Carla's scene felt far more out of place than the rest of the scenes, or the ones in Kana).

I just don't see how anyone mature enough wouldn't be able to enjoy something like that when it's well told enough. But again, maybe it's just me since I haven't grown up in an American environment.

Well said, I agree entirely. For one thing, if they removed the sex scenes from the game it would have sold half as many. Most people, like me approached KLS just looking for another h-game to play.

Don't read this if you intend on giving the game a chance.
Spoiler:
On my first play through, the last thing I expected to happen was for Kana to die; I kept thinking 'Oh they'll find some way to save the girl like they always do.' But they don't, at least not in 5 of the 6 endings. Games don't usually go that far, the only one I can think of where a main character dies is FFVII, and honestly Aeris's death was weak compared to Kana. Most games have a happy ending where everyone lives happily ever after. But most games aren't adult rated are they? So the developers can't do whatever they want. That's not the case in KLS, they went all the way, throwing conformities out the window, and the only good ending is still quite depressing. Which makes it a very good, unique experiance. Of course people who never played it wouldn't know that, they only bought it for the hentai. So you either love it, or hate it, but at least try it.

surasshu May 31, 2007 11:23 AM

Monkey King hasn't played the game (right?), so he can't really tell whether the sex scenes are doing the game a disservice in the sense that they detract from the story. The sex actually makes sense in the context of the story to me and seems like something that would be weird if it wasn't there. I actually feel that some games are weird because they don't have sex scenes, sex is a natural part of love in my opinion.

But I think his point is the game turns people off because it's marketed as an adult game. You've seen the gut reactions in this very thread by people who have no idea what the game is about. If this was an RPG or an adventure game, nobody would be suggesting that one of the possible endings would be "group rape", I'll tell you that.

In other words, people are condemning the game because of it. That's what Monkey King means by doing the game a disservice. (I think?)

Anyway, the story of this game is really well done, and there's actual some measure of gameplay in it, so I would definitely recommend it, sex scenes and all.

I can understand that kind of concern, though it doesn't really detract from the whole so much as bring out uncalled prejudice. And that's not really something that's the game's fault or the development team's.

I suppose it just comes from my somewhat recent contempt towards most games that try to have storylines recently. I've pretty come to the opinion that if I want a good story I'll pick up a book since so many games with storylines people praise tend to just be snoozefests for me.

(Although, seriously, what is a H-Game without tentacle rape. I thought that was their whole selling point.)

Also, I agree with MK in I think their use of explicit (or so I'm figuring from how you guys describe it) sex scenes really do limit the audience. I mean, sure, you guys stumbled across it because you were looking for a game where you bang your (adopted) little sister, but I imagine they might have actually been able to expand to people that wouldn't have already played the game if it had been done without the explicit sex scenes.

Also, frankly, I feel like there's a bit of a difference between sex scenes in movies and sex scenes in my video games. Would a scene of Hiro sticking it to Lucia really have any chance of adding to the game? (Though I will say having different 'sleeping' cutscenes for each time you get a new wife in Azure Dreams might have given a reason to actually build up your harem.)

Bringing up the Lunar series is probably a bad idea, given Luna and Alex's relationship to each other in the first game. -_o

In the end, here's the thing you have to ask yourself: why are the sex scenes there? I can't say I'm completely convinced they exist in Kana just as a logical extension of the storyline. I mean, showing instead of telling is an important literary technique of course, but what are we learning about the characters through sex that couldn't be conveyed through other means?

There's better ways to do it, without venturing into questionable territory.

That's not really an issue here. What, do you have something against junior college students?

Oh yes, Ever17. I downloaded that but I haven't bothered with it apart from the first 15 minutes. Some girl named You was taking this guy for a tour, while this other person was in some sort of multi-level building with a little girl telling jokes and another tour guide telling them about the building.

It was probably following the story of two people or something, I'm sure I'll get around to it since most games aren't translated of these kinds. I'd like to see White Breath Kizuna translated (the description of it sounds a lot like Kana Little Sister) but I haven't even seen a single PS2 visual novel translated so far. I doubt people will start.
