Infact, and this may be a minor spoiler. .. .. You only have sex with two different girls, not a whole harem like most games. Taka's girlfriend and his adopted sister. |
Oh, I guess if you're only fucking your girlfriend and your sister you're a pretty classy guy.
That is if we're defining classy as a candidate for the Jerry Springer show. |

Now now RR. Not all of them need to be held in so much contempt (or feared, it seems). They're not great literature, but give 'em a break since they're not all about tentacles and kitchen utensils, even if you seem to want them to be. |

The only exceptions that come to mind are movies that are trying to be brutally realistic for a reason, like Schindler's List. Outside of that, you'll be hard pressed to find an R rated movie that wasn't as much about the nudity as it was the plotline. Simply put, sex scenes aren't a means, they're an end unto themselves. The story would work just as well if boy and girl go to bed together, then it fades to black, like it does in so many other media. Ergo, they're doing themselves a disservice including sex scenes in the game because it detracts from the whole, rather than compliments. |
Maybe it's the European in me talking here, but I still don't see how it's doing a disservice. Sure, you can remove the sex scenes and the story will be there, just as you can remove, say, the references to drugs in Trainspotting or any talk of sex in Y Tu Mama Tambien. But why? Why has the age rating thing conditioned people to think that anything raising the rating is something excessive and gratuitous. The sex scenes don't detract from anything since they're a part of the whole. You follow the storyline, you care about the characters, they fall in love, they have sex, and you're happy for them. They could fade to black, but showing the characters making love makes a much more effective statement about just how the two feel about each other.
It's not a game that would be played by regular gamers anyway. It IS an h-game, it makes no attempt to hide this, it simply is more gentle and honest than what's generally in games of this type (dating simulators as people assumed earlier). The audience is obviously completely different (at least that's what everyone's trying say, apparently). I'm reminded of Fahrenheit's notorious sex scenes that were cut out from the US version, even though they showed more of the characters' relationships than could be shown without them (though Lucas' and Carla's scene felt far more out of place than the rest of the scenes, or the ones in Kana). I just don't see how anyone mature enough wouldn't be able to enjoy something like that when it's well told enough. But again, maybe it's just me since I haven't grown up in an American environment. |

Don't read this if you intend on giving the game a chance. Spoiler:

Monkey King hasn't played the game (right?), so he can't really tell whether the sex scenes are doing the game a disservice in the sense that they detract from the story. The sex actually makes sense in the context of the story to me and seems like something that would be weird if it wasn't there. I actually feel that some games are weird because they don't have sex scenes, sex is a natural part of love in my opinion.
But I think his point is the game turns people off because it's marketed as an adult game. You've seen the gut reactions in this very thread by people who have no idea what the game is about. If this was an RPG or an adventure game, nobody would be suggesting that one of the possible endings would be "group rape", I'll tell you that. In other words, people are condemning the game because of it. That's what Monkey King means by doing the game a disservice. (I think?) Anyway, the story of this game is really well done, and there's actual some measure of gameplay in it, so I would definitely recommend it, sex scenes and all. EDIT: Quote:

(Although, seriously, what is a H-Game without tentacle rape. I thought that was their whole selling point.) Also, I agree with MK in I think their use of explicit (or so I'm figuring from how you guys describe it) sex scenes really do limit the audience. I mean, sure, you guys stumbled across it because you were looking for a game where you bang your (adopted) little sister, but I imagine they might have actually been able to expand to people that wouldn't have already played the game if it had been done without the explicit sex scenes. Also, frankly, I feel like there's a bit of a difference between sex scenes in movies and sex scenes in my video games. Would a scene of Hiro sticking it to Lucia really have any chance of adding to the game? (Though I will say having different 'sleeping' cutscenes for each time you get a new wife in Azure Dreams might have given a reason to actually build up your harem.) |

In the end, here's the thing you have to ask yourself: why are the sex scenes there? I can't say I'm completely convinced they exist in Kana just as a logical extension of the storyline. I mean, showing instead of telling is an important literary technique of course, but what are we learning about the characters through sex that couldn't be conveyed through other means? There's better ways to do it, without venturing into questionable territory. |
No matter how young she looks, don't worry, j-list has you covered.

It was probably following the story of two people or something, I'm sure I'll get around to it since most games aren't translated of these kinds. I'd like to see White Breath Kizuna translated (the description of it sounds a lot like Kana Little Sister) but I haven't even seen a single PS2 visual novel translated so far. I doubt people will start. |
