Is my desktop a phone because it can use VOIP?

Guru May 15, 2007 03:47 PM

What makes the Helio so special that it's not a phone? I have a LG VX8600 (also known as the Chocolate clamshell), and it has every single feature that the Helio has. I also think it looks a lot cooler. And I also don't have to do that whole "don't call it a phone" schtick every time I refer to it. That shit's just annoying.

I was referring to the Helio, but if you want to get into semantics, sure.

The Helio's main purpose, no matter how much they don't want it to be, is that of a phone. All the other crap it does is nice, but in the end, if I'm dialing a number to call someone, it's a damn phone.

No. It's a computer. Everything else is extra.

I've been thinking about upgrading my phone just so I can put my MP3s on there and use them as ring tones. But then I realized that other than my girlfriend, I rarely get calls so I won't be able to show off my ring tones. So no to that idea, so far.

Chaotic May 16, 2007 04:41 PM

Seriously, if it calls people like a phone, texts people like a phone, and takes pictures like a phone.

Then it's a fucking phone.

I don't see why Helio has to be so different. It's still a phone no matter what anyone says. And even if you have a full QWERTY keyboard people will still talk shorthanded because they think it's cool to confuse people.

OMG, INBD!

INBD? In bed, can't respond?

But if it can download music, play music, store music, isn't it an MP3 player? Guess it just depends on what it's initially marketed as in the end.

INBD = It's no big deal.

It's from the Cingular AT&T text messaging commercial.

Same time I was reading this another commercial came on... There are too many of those thing these days

Sadly, I always text with correct pronunciation and grammar when texting, unless I'm in an extreme hurry. I think it might annoy my friends, but I think it's more annoying getting the "one word" aka acronym responses.

This is really what e-mail is for. Text messaging is like e-mail, except for prepubescent children.

Ironically, it also shows the sad state of things today: fucking 10 year olds shouldn't have a cell phone, much less have a cell phone and be allowed to text on them.

In broad daylight it says Helio|Ocean, Heat & Drift Cell phones

They don't want US to call em Phones, but when people search for "cell phones" on a search engine... they sure as hell wanna be in the results

(Somebody's due an ass whoopin according to my thread title...)

Sounds like something Seris would say. Get ahold of yourself you wreckless bottlenose.

Text messaging is like an economic crutch for cell phone owners in this country.

Not to mention the fact that it'll make people believe that using those godforsaken acronyms in ACTUAL SPEECH is acceptable. If someone ever tried to talk to me that way, I'm pretty sure I'd never talk to them again.

Chaotic May 17, 2007 09:47 AM

Ironically, I only use WTF if school when I can't really say it out loud in front of my teacher, but I still need to express my anger. Minus that, I don't really do that .

Yeah... I had someone actually say "LOL" instead of laughing on a few occasions. I had to really resist the urge to punch them square in the mouth.

The phones' features are awesome, but the network is pretty wimpy compared to the other big hitters in the cell industry. I can't even find a full coverage map - just coverage by zip code. Other service providers are going to pick up on Helio's cues and start integrating this sorta stuff into their phones, all they've gotta do is strike a big enough deal with the manufacturers. I'll stick with my service.

Guru May 17, 2007 05:24 PM

Erm... the only thing the Helio has over most phones these days is a better camera (and that's just over most phones). Some phones don't have friend locators, but a lot do. So, there's really not a whole lot setting it apart. Maybe 2 years ago when Helios were new, they would have been pretty cool (but I'm sure the network sucked pretty hardcore at that point).
